J.J. Abrams Looks Back on Super 8, the Monster Metaphor, That Ending and More

  • J.J. Abrams reflects on the making of Super 8 for the film's 10th anniversary. During our discussion, the filmmaker addressed a burning (and incredibly nerdy) question about the film’s audio commentary track while also explaining how the story for Super 8 came to be thanks to Steven Spielberg. He also talked about how he was able to capture moments of truth with his young ensemble by rolling cameras during setups without the kids knowing it, and conjuring the central monster as a metaphor for the film’s hero.
We also asked Abrams if he felt like a movie like Super 8 - a wholly original sci-fi movie from a major studio - could be made today, and he reflected on his experience opening and closing the new Star Wars sequel trilogy and the importance of knowing when it’s critical to have a plan mapping an overarching story out. The incredibly busy filmmaker and producer also gave an update on his upcoming HBO series Demimonde and confirmed that the project Collider (no relation) is not currently in active development - but that doesn’t mean he and Edgar Wright won’t work together some day.
Abrams was candid, thoughtful, and curious in his answers - something I wasn't quite expecting from a filmmaker of his stature, and a pleasant surprise. He's clearly a guy who loves storytelling and filmmaking, and it was a blast to be able to pick his brain about Super 8 if only for 15 minutes. You watch the interview above, or read the transcript of our conversation below. Super 8 is now available on 4K UHD Blu-ray.

Honestly, I thought he was a perfect fit for Star Wars when he directed The Force Awakens. Now that is my favourite Abrams film bar none! It's perfectly paced; the action scenes are exciting, well shot, intense, and well thought out; it pays homage to the Original Trilogy whilst adding a new style to the franchise; the new characters were introduced fantastically, especially Rey; it introduces some new interesting ideas, like Finn being a Stormtrooper, as well as Rey's parents; and in my opinion, is way better executed than any of the Prequel Trilogy films combined.

He never said he didn’t have a plan for the trilogy, nor did he say he wish he had one. I think he had a plan for all three films, but then Lucasfilm let Rian do his own thing, and Episode IX was an amalgam of his initial plan and new ideas.

I agree. I think JJ came on to start the trilogy and set up some plot threads, then Rian was given free rein and did whatever he wanted, then JJ was asked to come back and pick up the pieces. There are a number of people I’d blame for how disjointed the trilogy is before blaming JJ. I think on both of his films, he did what he thought would be best for the series as a whole (whether or not you agree with his choices), whereas Rian seemed to only care about what was best for his one film.

I'm gonna say this, and I know you're not gonna like it. I think The Force Awakens is the best Star Wars film since The Empire Strikes Back.

Such a bad, bad, bad, bad filmmaker - so much so that he shouldnt be named "film-maker". He is simply a gun-for-hire with nothing but a big mouth and a whole lot of copycat attitude. Abrahms has ZERO originality in him. None of his movies stand the test of time and they all contain ripoffs of great filmmaking by true artists. Throw some money at him, and he will do what ever you want - no matter how bad it gets.

Yeah, well you know you're not the only one whose opinion truly matters. Also, you're comparing him to someone like M. Night Shyamalan or Michael Bay in terms of quality. To be honest with you mate, I would rather watch Star Trek Into Darkness over and over and over again, than sit though a whole Transformers film over and over and over again.
