Gris - Part 1 & 2 [Oboe / English horn cover]

- After waffling back and forth for awhile, I bought Gris for the flight to GDC last month. The dreamy watercolor art direction drew me in, as did citing Journey and Ori as its main two influences. It's a steadily-paced passage through the five stages of grief after the title character experiences tragedy, and it really began to win me over in the final stages - beautiful to look at, beautiful to listen to, let me get lost in my thoughts as I played.
The ending of the game, in particular Gris' singing, is what affected me to the point of covering this theme. Normally I try to transform a little bit more beyond the original source material, but this time wasn't an exercise in my creativity, it was a personal catharsis.
Disclaimer, I have zero training as a singer (and probably hurt myself in this process), but there was no way I was gonna use a sample library for this, haha :)
Thank you as always for listening!!

This game came at such an important time for me. I had lost a dear friend who lived across the ocean, the one I had known the longest. And I was torn about whether or not I would, or even could fly to say goodbye to her myself. I was so lost, it felt like a part of me had died with her too. It was its own agony. And yet this game just happened to arrive and it help me rebuild a tiny part of myself. Enough to find the strength to fly across the seas and say goodbye. It was something I sorely needed. It is my dream as a game designer to create games that can reach and connect others in as significant ways as this game did for me.
You've managed to help me relive my moment of healing gifted to me from the game. I admit I am tearing up a bit as I write this. It has provided me so much comfort and healing on its own as well. Art is powerful. So I take this moment to again express gratitude with all my heart for all the hard and loving work. Your work is real and significant to me. Thank you.
Your story moves me. I am very sorry for your loss, and I am also glad that you have found the strength to move forward.
Oh how I wish I'd seen comments sooner. I'm tremendously sorry for your loss, and I'm deeply moved that I could help bring back to you, even a little, of what this game means to you. I think a lot of us who played it experienced different pieces of the same kind of healing and can connect through that, though our stories are all different. Thank you for sharing yours, I hope your healing continues and that your memories of your friend are all happy ones.
This makes me cry all over again after I've had my share with the original piece.

Strange... am I only one who not get any emotions?
Listening to this reminded me of why I fell in love with the game - the music, the art direction, the overall story it tells! You did such a phenomenal job with this, Kristin 😭🙏
Thanks Michaela! I'm glad I gave it a chance too :D
I'm astounded I haven't found this channel earlier.
This cover is beyond sublime. English horn and oboes are my favorite woodwinds instruments to listen to, and hearing those traditional flutes with their forlorn tones makes it so bone-chillingly beautiful. The bells and organs and the choir give me chills. Theres' a lot of stuff I want to say, but this makes me feel so happy and profoundly melancholic. A phenomenal arrange.
Welcome back!! I'm so happy you're still around. That's the reason I never unsubscribe. Every video you post is like a shot of dopamine. :P
Hahaha I'm so happy!! Thank you :D
The triplets added in the melodies added in at 4:06 and after are just pure emotion. Love it.
Kristin this is so beautiful, gave me goosebumps throughout the entire piece 😭❤ Thanks for making this cover, definitely gonna check this game out!
Thank you!! Also I don't know why I wasn't subscribed to you, fixing now, hahaha
This makes me really want to replay Gris for the 9th time. Really beautiful.
This is gorgeous, but I have to say my favorite part of the game both musically and visually is when first entering the water segment. The calm, blue watercolor and rain combined with the sad strings moved me beyond words. Such a beautiful game.
OMG! This is completely on a par with the original work from Berlinist.
I pray this will never be taken down, because I will always come back to it
The quality... gosh this is so beautiful, takes me back to finishing the game and that final cutscene (which made me cry so hard)
This is absolutely beautiful, Kristin! Well done! I love it! Thank you for making it!
My god, my heart is racing, I have always felt that oboe and English horn were some of my favorite instruments but you've utterly convinced me of their majesty.
Beautilful! such a great song
*I saw a man who has the same avatar*

Just beautiful
Well, well! It's certainly a pleasant surprise seeing an upload from you! And to top it off, a nice game recommendation as well.
Always make me cry man.
Welp, it's been nice being a singer in VGM, but I gladly lay my career at your feet along with the last vestiges of my emotions.
This is a welcome addition to the world. Very beautiful music. Well done.
Good to hear from you again Kristin! As always, you never fail to suprise and move me. Thank you so much for sharing and keep up the good work. Love, Nadine
So beautiful...
I replay this video again and again
3:38 so beautiful 💙
This is a new favorite for me and has inspired me to check out this game a little further. As an oboe/english horn major, your work is always so lovely. And the singing was just fine! Fantastic job
Thank you so much!! I hope you enjoyed the game, if you looked into it :)
This is a BEAUTIFUL cover, and you really gave part 2 that goosebump inducing oomph 💖 i love this
Makes it sound more fantastical 😍
So amazing! This soundtrack is amazing and I’m so glad you made a cover of it. Keep up that absolutely outstanding work Kristin!
Beautifully done!
Wow amazing cover. Thank you.
Lovely as always!
Beautiful
this is fantastic
Wow, the ensemble makes this feel so grand, and your playing at the beginning still somehow retains all of the emotion of the original. Incredible job!
I can't help but ask if you created the entire instrumental from scratch?? I wanted to make a vocal version of Gris pt. 1 and 2 without the original vocals and am wondering if you wouldn't mind sharing how you managed to create this.
Thank you! I did make it from scratch, just listening to the originals and transcribing what I heard with samples for piano, strings, and various synths.
@@FieldofReeds That's absolutely incredible! Would you maybe be interested in sharing your rendition without the main melodic oboe line or whatnot? I'd happily purchase it if that was the case. Either way, you did such a great job on this!
Wow. thrill on the end
Absolutely beautiful job. Beautiful music, beautiful performance. You've earned a subscriber.
This game means so much to me emotionally and artistically, especially the music, and it warms my heart to see it having the same effect on other musicians.
Do you have sheet music for this arrangement? I wouldn't mind buying it if you'll accept.
Kirb it
