    HI Ivan,In order to save my tools,I've got in the habit of breaking loose all bolts 3/8 and up with a 15 or 20 inch breaker bar first. Then i use the power tools only for the speed of removal.People get to upset when they're crappy power tools won't break a bolt loose,and then get mad when the power tool SNAPS the head off,haha
    when using your hands ,you can FEEL if the bolts going to need heat.Remember power tools were developed to make the job faster,Not better.TIME IS MONEY.
    HEY,It's not my fault,THAT bolt was broken when it came in,haha.thanks Ivan

    The moral of this story is to buy a huge compressor that can produce a high volume of air at high pressure if you want your air impact wrenches to work well.

    When compressing that strut it reminded me of what i learned in the kitchen. Never, and i mean never attempt to remove the lid off a pressure cooker until all of the pressure has been relieved. Even though the guage may of read a tiny bit of pressure was still in the cooker it was still enough to almost make the lid fly sky high.

    • @GarthGoldberg
      @GarthGoldberg 4 года назад

      Newer pressure cookers won't let you make that mistake. Maybe you need one from the last thirty years. Also, just put it under running cold water and the pressure will reduce quickly. I use a pressure cooker all the time.

    Ivan,
    That car is so old school - drum brakes with 4-lugs! The Contour/Mystique was actually co-developed on a scaled up version of the Escort/Tracer platform. Even OEM replacement parts dont last as long as the originals -> 3 years/30K miles is actually pretty good.

      All compact cars had drums in the rear and 4 lug wheels not too long ago. I much prefer drums in the rear because they are virtually maintenance-free. This really adds up in the rust belt. I just recently replaced the shoes and parking brake cables on the Mystique; the original parts lasted 24 years and 280k miles!!

    Muffler hitting the towing hook bracket reminded me, when my dad once installed an aftermarket towing hook to our 1988 Opel Kadett and the bracket went so close to the muffler that in some situations, it made an air hammer -like sound, as it vibrated against the bracket :D
    Solution was to grind small peace off the bracket.

    You've got yourself a nice collection of impacts there now! I got my first compressor and air tools in 2001. Still feels too soon to reinvest in electrics for me (I'm cheap, lol). I did get a Bosch 3/8" drive electric impact for my birthday from my brother, though. I mostly use it around the house, like when I took down the 50 year old TV antenna - zipped those old lag bolts right out. Also installed a motion light on the new shop with it, too. Was great having no cords or hoses to deal with, and the thing is pretty potent for its size. When working on cars, I always go for the tried and true - old habits are hard to break!
    Exhaust rattles have to be one of the most annoying sounds when driving. Nice fix! 👍🍻
    I remember when I got back from my time out West in my '72 El Camino, I decided to get a custom bent system installed by a local exhaust shop. Paid $400 (in 2001), and all I heard on the way home was part of the pipe hitting the frame! Was such an easy fix, too - I crawled under and just loosened the collector flanges & readjusted everything. Now why couldn't they have spent the extra 2 seconds doing this when it was on a lift?? I did this out in the road - the good ol' days, lol! That was one of the 2 times that car was ever in a shop. The second time was for a set of new mags and tires at a local big tire chain store. After the guy was squealing my power steering and laughing about it with his buddies out back, and they nicked and scratched my brand new wheels, I bought a tire machine and balancer as soon as I could a couple years after we moved in here. Every time I let someone else do ANY work on my vehicles (mainly alignments, glass, body work, and custom exhausts), there's ALWAYS an issue!! I just noticed last week that the driver's side rear window on my Silverado (extended cab) doesn't work anymore. The plastic housing for the switch is broken - I was never in there ... but the body shop was 4 years ago after some guy sideswiped me in the city ...
    On that topic, Corey over at S&A Auto Repair just posted a Live vid on this yesterday - shoddy workmanship. I'd bet we could post a whole weeks worth of videos on shoddy parts, like that Motorcraft strut that only made it 3 years / 30k!

    Hope you put the marine grease on a new strut bolt. The old one looked like it would break if you put any stress on it at all. Thanks for showing us the comparison between the impact wrenches; very informative. I haven't priced the HF Earthquakes, but when my compressor broke down a year or so ago, I found a bunch of HD online deals on what appeared to be a hundred or more different 18V battery-powered tool packages that were shipped to you free. Among many other tools, I got the 3 speed 1/2" Impact wrench with a couple of medium capacity batteries and a charger for less than the regular price of the bare tool, if I remember correctly, and I bought a pair of their then-new 9-amp 18 Volt batteries for a very low price. Unlike some other brands, the shape of the Ryobi 18V battery stays the same, and will continue to fit your older tools, while the storage capacity, power, discharge rate (when just sitting on the shelf) and the run time get better and better as the tools get more efficient. I'm not a professional but in the 15 or more years I've used 18V Ryobi tools, I've never had one break, and I've never had to throw one away because it was obsolete. 3 year warranty, serviced through your local HD store instead of shipping it somewhere at your expense.

My impacts of choice are the DeWalt DCF899 and DCF887. They make short work of jobs such as this and are worth every penny they cost. lol at end of video, I had a feeling it was the exhaust moving around and banging going by explanation and the fact of struts are mostly a higher pitch continuous rattle up high in the car.
    they'll carry on badly on gravel roads and even seemingly smooth roads, except maybe in the south with almost perfect smooth roads.
    I always grab onto and bounce the vehicle all around, then the wheels at the top and yank them back and forth until the whole vehicle is rocking around, bonus is you'll feel and hear any loose suspension parts clunking, wheel bearings, bushings and probably half dozen other things you didn't know about lol. of course it's best done in a quiet garage or outside quiet area.

    Air tools still have more rattle power than electric. I use tons of electric tools, but even the best won't do the job sometimes.

    Wholesale can also mean defective....
    Bought 2 Timken Wheel Bearings for $25.00 each and they failed shortly thereafter.
    I’m cautious with these close out parts from Rock Auto,.However, it could also be my imagination.

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
      @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics 4 года назад +1

      Well it may be the case that the parts have been sitting on the shelf for 15 years haha. I've had bad luck with Timken bearings. Usually try to find SKF or National, Moog, Koyo NSK etc.

      Good to know.....
      Another problem for lots of folks who take their cars in for wheel bearing replacement, they don’t torque to specs anymore, drill until you can’t drill anymore.

    Enjoyed your video of a year ago on the Autel MaxiCom MK808TS. Why were the comments restricted? I wanted to ask where you should buy an Autel scanner to get u.s. support for registration and service if needed and know the scanner is not a knock off.

    Your issue with the rear shocks looks very similar to the Monroe helper spring rear shocks I put on my 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan, They lasted 3 months and then started leaking. Installed a set of Japanese built KYBs and my problem was solved. Is it possible that you had Monroe built struts that were branded Ford?

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
      @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics 4 года назад

      Nope they were branded "Motorcraft"...at least this one lasted 3 years vs 3 months haha

    Ivan, shouldn't the new strut extend all the way after you release it? It looks like it has lost gas.

    Have you done wheel bearings yet ? I had a pretty annoying hum while driving . Front wheel bearings took care of it. Pressed them out on the car .

      Yup did the front wheel bearings 30k miles ago at 240k. Rear hubs are still original and smooth!

    Good find Ivan. Question is had you found the muffler issue first, would you have replaced the LR strut? Likely, you would have since you had the part and knew it was a leaker already. "Stainless Steel" these days isn't the same material as it once was when first offer in the market. There's industry standards and I believe 304 stainless is the good stuff but they haven't been using that for decades opting for the cheaper stuff it seems.

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
      @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics 4 года назад

      Yeah I wish I just patched up the original muffler. The exhaust hangers on this car are stainless, and still look MINT!

    I like your channel because you work on crap that none of us would ever own or choose to own or inherit or take for free or try to keep running or be interested in learning about or be caught dead with in our driveway. Even the Suzuki and the Rogue. Shit man, if not for crappy engineering you wouldn't have a channel. Love your channel.

    Had a 98 contour I had it to 175k sold it. It hit over 225k until she hit a deer. they were great cars. Neither of us has any problems with it. I hit a deer on the driver side lite hit cracked a headlight fixed it with super glue no problem, then ran over a coyote nothing. Hit a big Boar raccoon with my 04 Taurus it bent the condenser and cracked the bumper.

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics

      The Contour/Mystique is so aerodynamic, that deer just slide off the hood! I hit one at 20mph, basically no damage lol

      I was doing a lot faster than 20 but I was lucky. The coyote was hit center mass.
