Good idea. FYI - I have discovered if you take a straw and cut up a ways and then stick your paper in the cut part of the straw you have the same idea as the split skewer. The split part holds the paper to make the rolling easier.
Thanks so much for taking my sista's original video presentation, revising it, improving upon it, and making it your very own. Everyone loves you. You are very original and creative. Thanks so much.
I bought a box of assorted roll pins today at Harbor Freight Tools for around $6. I was able to make 10 bead rollers that each had two size roller ends (one slightly larger than the other). I want to have a bead rolling party, so I needed to make lots of tools. I found just the right size wooden skewer that would work for both ends and glued the roll pins onto the skewer ends with e6000. Tomorrow I'm going to glue some extra skewers around the main one to give it more of a round handle shape. Then I plan on getting polymer clay, the kind you bake, to wrap the skewers and bake it. I saw this in another youtube, but she used cotter pins. The roll pins, I think, will be an improvement. She also created cool designs in her clay and painted and distressed it. I purchased my first bead rolling tool from etsy, and it was made with roll pins. Just hoping the baked clay will really secure the roll pins into place.
How lucky you are to have a skewer groove! I have some hand issues too, although nothing nearly as serious as MS, so I do understand doing what it takes to make this kind of thing easier!
Thank you for sharing..........just want I wanted. I have hundereds of paper beads and am always creating even more as they will become my art room curtains as well as being used in art projects. Love that I can make a tool as needed for different sized holes in the beads.
I've found that some papers tend to stick more than others. Thin magazine type pages are worse than scrapbook papers. But the wax helped a great deal. Just one more reason for me love Daddy Van's!
These are really neat! I love the idea of putting the beads on both ends. It's helpful but also makes the tools look really cute! lol I haven't started making these beads yet...I'm afraid to, because I know I won't be able to stop lol
I just saw your video on how to make a paper beads tool I fell in love with your beads the shapes are so different I've never seen anybody else is being too like yours can you make up tutorial on the triangle looking shape beats that you have they are gorgeous thank you

Me encantaría leer tu respuesta. Te saludo desde mi país Argentina. Abrazo fraternal y besitos de Luz, para tu bella alma. Elenita
well done slicing that tooth pick in half, I am sure I would have done myself an injury trying to do that. its a fabulous idea I might just get hubby to make me one. hugs gina xxxxx
The cool think about this kind of bead roller is that you can make really long beads! 👏👏👏. I want to take all my odds & ends beads and make a string to go ‘round my Xmas tree but I don’t have nearly enough so I will make one of these rollers and make lots of long shaped beads. I have this idea to every 5-8 beads, add a coiled disc to the string by glueing a bail on the back and gluing to the back of the disc, then adding more beads and so on. I’m trying to have a tree with lots of my own ornaments this year. I got the idea of decorating my tree from watching one of your nine year old vids! 🥰🥰🥰
I watched this video about a month ago and I found that on one of my rulers there is a groove to lay the skewer in. It worked really well, but next time I think I will try the soaking them first. But with MS my hands don't have any grip, so this made it easier for me. Hope this helps. My Grand Daughter loves making the beads (or any craft ) LOL. TFS :) Sherri
The pointy pliers with the cutter include works cutting those without soaking them just hold tight and turn it around til it breaks a for will smooth the end Different size cotter pins work better
I saw the same vid on making your own roller. Once I had it smooth, I put a dab of glue between the halves and used pony beads for a handle. I also glued the beads to the split skewer. Thanks for sharing.
I want to make one of these but I want a real handle so I think I will make a handle from air dry clay that I can pop the two half sticks into when I want to roll beads. Then, like you, add a bead at the other end after I slide my paper between the sticks. I have a little arthritis in my dominant hand and a thicker handle helps it to not get so tired & aching.
I have the home made tools from etsy, but the metal part is crooked! I never sent them back as I got them and haven't used them. Now I want to! Shannon, you are an enabler for sure! You made me do it! lol
I made bead rollers by baking a cotter pin in the end of a log of polymer clay. But yours are wayyyy purtier than mine! I'm gonna go make some right now!
For cutting the wood I stood it up on the edge took my acto knife and laid it in the middle that took a small hammer and tapped. This split the wood easier for me. I made paper beads with the size dowel I used and glue them on. Pennie
Shannon, I laughed when you said you can't stop making them, I have issues with not being able to stop rolling the beads, and Ive made them out of anything paper including used coffee cups!
Yes, for the most part it costs nothing as Im using stuff from my recycling bin but I have become obsessed and tempted to look through the neighbors binds too :)
Will definitely try the candle wax on my next one. Also love the idea for making it shorter and sanding both sides. Guess that would make sense since the paper will have to slip off the outer sides of the tool as well. Happy Beading :)
I always save the long toothpicks that come on sandwich halves when I go out to eat. Going to ask my friends tonight for theirs too. They work great. I love your vids. You're an inspiration......and a hoot!
oh, I see. =) ... Well, yeah, and the tools you made look neat too. so they are a nice little "decoration" too. they're prettier then the "Store bought' tools. =) *grins*..
Yes it's really healpful now my hands is not so stress in pulling or realigning the paper. But can you teach me how to make the big paper beads the green one that you are holding?
To solve the problem of using that little toothpick bead maker, you coukd cut off the end of a shish kabob stick, the pointy end, then you would have the room to add a bead.
this is awesome. I try it and I love it. Shannon have you try to make one with the polymer clay handles? I try it but I use Mod Podge on it. but its so sticky. what can you use to seal that wont be sticky carol
love this, wish I had seen it before. I did buy Janice Mae's bamboo roller, while its a really nice tool with the amount of abuse I'm giving it I fear it will break sooner than later, I'm going to try making some!
Her tools are lovely but if I'm going to break one I'd rather it be cheap and something I can easily replace! And I have broken one of my homemade ones that I didn't cut well. No biggie, I made another one and cut it better :)
+starwolf539 I think it would work if you could split it completely smoothly....which I can't. I always have to do a little sanding or my paper gets snagged and I'm not sure I could do that with a partial split.
A skewer or an awl will work but you have to hold the paper with your finger to get the rolling started. If you want something slotted that will hold the paper for you, then you'll have to either buy a bead rolling tool or make one yourself.
Soaking the stick made a huge difference! It does make it so much easier!
I totally agree!

+blackitten2 Great idea, I'll have to give that a try!

The original video was very inspiring, I'm so glad I ran across it!

You should! They're super simple, they work, and they're much cheaper than buying the tool, even if you have to pick up a few supplies.
It was genius really. I'm so impressed with how she figured it out!

The only problem I have with watching your videos during my lunch break is that I don't have the time to craft afterwards;)
Really like your tools. I followed your instruction and watched Rose's vid also. Thank you for the heads up on soaking the bamboo. Worked well.
Diane Hughes Thanks for watching!

great video. I also use a Styrofoam xmas tree to hang them with toothpicks to varnish them.
Oh I spoke too soon. I think I recognize a couple others. Glad they found a good home and a new career!
What a clever idea she had and I like your improvement ideas, too! :)

Ha! I guess if we have to have a vice, paper beads isn't so bad!

That means you'll just have a bunch of pent up inspiration to unleash when you do have some craft time!
TFS. I’ll have to try this, can’t wait.
I always save the long toothpicks that come on sandwich halves when I go out to eat. Going to ask my friends tonight for theirs too. They work great. I love your vids. You're an inspiration......and a hoot!
So glad you enjoyed it!
I tore my house up looking for my quilling tools which I guess I got rid of before we moved. Well that's okay, this is working out great!
Thank you so much for this tutorial this is exactly what I need!
very cool. =) I'm actually lucky enough to have a tool, in my quilling kit. But I would definitely make one of these, if I didn't have it. =)
I would love to do a beaded curtain! Maybe that's what I can do with all these dang beads I can't stop making!
Shannon Green my mom made one. It was an obsession.
Raid your husband’s washers or other items to secure the bamboo roller if you don’t have beads. Great video
Great idea thanks!
oh, I see. =) ... Well, yeah, and the tools you made look neat too. so they are a nice little "decoration" too. they're prettier then the "Store bought' tools. =) *grins*..

If you're referring to the bead that's on the end of the tool, that one isn't paper, it's a ceramic bead I bought.
Oh okay! thank you.😄 😄 I'm just starting to learn the paper beading I hope to learn more from you.
I believe I recognize the 'handle' on your toothpick bead roller tool thingy! ;o)
Ahhh, yes you should! See? You knew I needed those beads :)
Thank you so much for your help in making paper beads roller. Very informative and clear video.
+Rosalba Consuegra You are very welcome!
Great idea! Very descent of you to give credit to the bead tool inventor.
I'm just thrilled that I remembered who it was!
To solve the problem of using that little toothpick bead maker, you coukd cut off the end of a shish kabob stick, the pointy end, then you would have the room to add a bead.
Love it!
Yep, I used several!
this is awesome. I try it and I love it. Shannon have you try to make one with the polymer clay handles? I try it but I use Mod Podge on it. but its so sticky. what can you use to seal that wont be sticky carol
Wax usually helps with the sticky. You can just rub a candle on it.
I will try it ty so much Shannon
So helpful! Thank you.

Oh I never though of that, great idea!
Um yeah. Stopping has been a bit of a problem for me.
All morning errors are automatically forgiven!
Great idea!
Well, somebody has to be the enabler. It's a burden but I make the best of it! ;)
What if you only split the wood part way down?
+starwolf539 I think it would work if you could split it completely smoothly....which I can't. I always have to do a little sanding or my paper gets snagged and I'm not sure I could do that with a partial split.
Ooh,good.my bead got stuck and I had to wriggle it to get it off,now ill use some wax.
Great ideas, thanks!
What else can i use as a tool?
A skewer or an awl will work but you have to hold the paper with your finger to get the rolling started. If you want something slotted that will hold the paper for you, then you'll have to either buy a bead rolling tool or make one yourself.
Thank you for sharing
Shannon. Very nice. Could. U please. Let me know from where can only them. Or one can make at home
Lalit Seema You can make these yourself using toothpicks, skewers, or small wooden dowels.
That's right!
Wonderful information!!! Thanks so much!!!
