I can imagine how successful Costco must be in China. Costco's entire business model of making you feel like a bargain hunter with their warehouse layout feels tailor-made to rake in money in China.
Also the parking lot is too far away from the actual store site. I would be too exhausted to do any shopping if I was at your Costco. They should rearrange the parking lot so that is more easier and walk and also closer to the store. 🛒🙂🇺🇸✌🗽
Costco isn't sending anything to Costco in China. China got blocked up, I work for the Distribution. I saw it, they removed the location number on the shipping lane.
5:40 The whole point of the roast chicken isn’t that it is great. It tastes okay. The point is you can feed 3 or 4 people for ¥30 RMB or $4.99 USD. You can’t beat that. If you buy some cheap rice and vegetables to go with it for $5, you can feed your family for $10. Steamed broccoli and carrot go well with it and green beans too.
The thing to learn early with Costco is that when something is On Sale for an advertised discount price, it will be difficult to beat that price. Additionally, if you purchase certain items in bulk packages, you can definitely save money. So, if you're shopping for a large family, Costco memberships can pay off throughout the year. Otherwise, if you're only shopping for a small family, you need to stick with the special prices, or invest in a good freezer, in which you can store many of the food items that would otherwise perish before you can eat them all. Here in Canada and the USA, it's also very wise to use the Costco Gas Station. It's much cheaper.
We don't buy bread, fruits or vegetables at Cosco as we found the quality is not as good as the other super markets. However, Cheese, anything canned or preserved, personal hygiene items, protein powder and much more is wayy cheaper. So I'll go about once a month.
unicorn99999 l12334 not really, if you go to Zhonghe Costco, only weekend you will see lots of customers. Most of weekday time, no , very few customers.
At the same time chaotic scenes from openings, like in this case, gives the vendor a lot of exposure. My guess is that the end result is a win for the vendor.
In the U.S. they send out a coupon book every month which helps for finding deals on electronics that are actually worth it. Usually a few items will be substantially discounted by a few hundred dollars (USD).
Waiting in line for a freaking Costco ...damn, life can't get any worse. Then again, here in Fuzhou they just opened the first 7eleven. It was so busy the first week, you would think they were handing out free cancer medicine. I love how they hype up things in this country.
Looks like Costco in Australia, you got the genuine store. Somethings have to be different. When Costco first opened up here, they imported American guns safes in huge numbers for opening day, but Australia has strict gun laws, and almost no market for gun safes. Their hearing aids and glasses are usually cheap and top service.
i haven't eaten pork in years. Same as cow, sheep, horse and other red meat animals. I prefer white meat like fish, shellfish, turkey. But in general everyone says to limit meat, dairy, eggs and honey consumption and eat more vegetables, fruit, beans and nuts like plant based food and drinks. it's an healthy diet and it fights climate change together with less consumption of single use plastic, leather , fur and fossil fuels.
After several generations, your descendants will become shorter. This is why the Japanese are short. In the shogunate, Japan believed in Buddhism, and the government refused to allow people to eat meat.
I live in UK now and pork loin steaks are 40 RMB/kg, bacon is about 56 RMB/kg. Pork cuts can be relatively cheap compared to chicken, beef or lamb though. I remember in Shanghai, the pork was more expensive than the chicken in the Carrefour supermarkets.
Costco has acted pretty smart so far. My mainland Chinese colleagues in the US working LOVE Costco. I do not know why cause as American, we consume and spend too much. They even buy stuff from Costco and ship it back to China for profit. Apparently that actually makes money. Also helped Costco branding ahead of opening. Some things like watermelon are good at Costco. They have a good retail mode. Instead of McDonald theory, now it's Costco theory of conflict prevention.
Don't know how true it is, but apparently Chinese brands cut a lot of corners. Like dangerous ingredients in toiletry or food products, or subpar manufacturing, etc. Costco has better quality at a really affordable price, in BULK.
ONE IMPORTANT THING TO LOOK OUT EVERY FEBRUARY IS THE REWARD CHECK SENDING BY COSTCO. IT WILL SEND ATTACHED WITH THE MONTLY BILL. SO, TAKE IT TO THE STORE AND CASH IT OUT YOUR MONEY. JUST BUY A FEW ITEMS AND CASH MONEY FOR THE REST. I JUST RECEIVED MINE LAST WEEK FOR $107. MY FRIEND BUYS A LOT FROM COSTCO, SO EVERY YEAR HE MAKES ABOUT $500.
Costco in some areas in Korea is also crowded at times. And you can’t even get a seat in foodcourt sometimes. I like the 24pcs bread that is actually super cheap.
Ni hao Simon, I live in Sacramento county, Northern California. I was just at my Costco today. The rotisserie chicken is very good and cheap: $4.99. Some things are expensive and others are not, it depends on what you are buying. I love Costco. I have bought all kinds of things beside food, like clothes, lamps, , even furniture, etc... I hope that you enjoy your Costco.
I’m from nyc They should build a BJs WHOLESAL in China it’s exactly like COSTCO really good store it’s good that they’re building stores like that especially in different countries
Hello! Robert here in Canada. IMHO, they always have a fair price. I could find cheaper prices, but I would need to drive all over the city - who wants that! :)
So busy and crowded- wow!! We all know that china has a huge population but its so interesting to actually SEE it! Thank you for showing us this Ps- i love shopping at costc here in the usa and always find things to be reasonably priced.
I love your video, Costco is my favorite store, I can even shop there online too. The store looks the same as here. I;m in California, I hope you and your wife had a good experience shopping there. There is always a crowd in our store, and long waits in line for checking, because, so many people buy a lot of stuff, I know I do. My computer, big screen tv set, etc. I bought there, I just recently discovered and subscribed to your channel.
There is a costco in baton rouge built just for the movie studio behind it. I usually spend $5000 a week on food for movie cast and crew. It's worth it if you are buying food/snacks/drinks.
Pork is very cheap in the U.S. Even at the height of the pandemic when chicken and beef was selling out. Most of the pork remained on the shelves. I live in New York.
I see you had a sample. Costco is known for having lots of free samples, but wasn’t sure that would work in Shanghai with the crowds there. We live in Denver and my wife, who is from Shanghai, absolutely loves Costco. It’s her favorite store. I’m sure she will visit your Costco the next time she’s in Shanghai!
Costco always a crazy place anyway here in Miami no matter a day or a time you went there always have a lot of peoples, but what I like from Costco the cashier are very fast
Have you been to a US Costco? This looks very similar but there are a few things different. First, the only Costco I have seen with a parking structure attached to the same building is in downtown San Francisco. All of the rest of the US Costco locations I have been to are in suburban locations and they are surrounded by surface parking lots. Second, the menu at the food court looks different. I had to look this up but it looks like they serve seafood pizza, coconut smoothies, and mango soft serve!! That's way more interesting than the US menu. But waiting to get into Costco starting from an hour before it opens, that's a bit ridiculous. Costco is not Disneyland. :) Still, I definitely want to go to this Costco the next time I am in Shanghai.
The building arrangement is very similar to Costco in Taiwan. I don't know what the situation in other Asian countries like Japan or Korea. Maybe it's caused by the higher population density.
Rotisserie chicken is good if you are creative, for me i like too sprinkle some black pepper chopped coriander and lime, the chicken breast meat though i usually have the them sliced and put away in a ziplock bag into the freezer that will last you a month,it’s great for sandwiches.
I wonder if Chinese Costco has cafeteria for shoppers to buy a slice of pizza and relax after a tiring time shopping there. My favorite is Combo pizza Costco offers.
Interesting, Costco now open to general public of Mainland China...they were in the Chongqing region selling to the food distributors a few years ago when I was still doing import/export with China. Costco essentially uses the same business model as Walmart's Sam's Club - both deal in bulk sales and both are highly successful!!! Welcome to Big China!!!
I love how it felt like an American costco, but all the products were Chinese focused. You'd /never/ see Chanel handbags in an American Costco, but you would find $30000 bottles of wine in the liquor department at Costco. We definitely don't have sea cucumbers in ours. Some will have live lobsters, though! The overall layout of the store seems identical to the American ones. Clothing looks pretty similar! The chickens cost the same here, $5. Electronics are also a bit more expensive in Costco compared to a website like Amazon, generally. Despite the fact my city, Las Vegas, has /four/ Costcos, they're all very busy. Not Shanghai levels of busy, but busy enough you'll be waiting fifteen minutes at the register, and bump into people by accident with your shopping carts. Costco has a reputation for inexpensive gasoline - so gasoline lines are often ten to thirty minutes at most Costcos. Pork belly in America is $7.67/kg, so honestly, more expensive than that Costco price there (54.94RMB/kg).
Pork belly prices in Singapore... abt S$14-S$15.00/kg for fresh ones, about S$20/kg for those sliced ones you featured. Those at COSTCO would be a bargain to us. I'm surprised by the noise level actually. Guess everybody is very excited about the bargains they can get at Costco.. LOL
I don't know unless you bring a cooler for meat, chicken, and pork and 200,000 RMB it's probably cheaper to shop around your house given the time you have to get up then travel and wait in line seems like too much of a hassle and too expensive unless you are bulk shopping. great video Simon.
The chicken is a big deal for lots of people because it's $4.99USD for 3lbs vs. same price or higher at food sores (near me, ShopRite, Acme, etc.) for less meat (about 2lbs.). And Costco LOSES money every year on those chickens, but that's what gets a lot of people into the building. Someone will go in there "just to get a chicken for supper," walk out with $200 worth of stuff in the cart. Chickens are always in the back (along with dairy cooler, water, paper goods), so you have to walk past everything just to get to it. I work at Costco btw. And my store sometimes looks like that on weekends & the day before/day after we're closed for a Holiday. Last weekend we almost ran out of carts!
American goods in there grocery are way cheaper Here in the Philippines i bought a 1.1 kg of honey from S&R online for a price of 12 dollars but in a local grocery store it cost 11.59 dollars for 340 grams only American goods company are honest to their price and serve better for the customers
Wow I can't believe people are waiting several hours in line just to shop in costco. In The States I've never seen costco so crowded unless it's black friday.
Having a line is typical for any new store or restaurant opening but... Wow That is almost like lining up to go to a theme park. Hopefully after a few months it will be easier to get in and out. As for our Costco it depends on the location. The parking lot is a lot more crowded in Southern California than in central but we don't have to line up as we already have Costco for a long time. You are right regarding pricing that not all prices is cheaper in Costco but it usually is specially if you use their coupons. And 40 minutes to get a roasted chicken? I hope you got more than one. LOL.
It's market strategy, they will make some products really cheap even with loss, so people come and buy that along with some other stuff (probably little expensive )…
I heard that the supermarket pork in Shanghai is 600 pounds, Shanghai Costco pork more than 400 pounds, the quality is guaranteed. So everyone went to grab it 🐷🐷🐷🐷
I can imagine how successful Costco must be in China. Costco's entire business model of making you feel like a bargain hunter with their warehouse layout feels tailor-made to rake in money in China.
In America there wouldn’t be this many people unless it was Black Friday 👀👀

I work at one in Cali and its like this every Sunday
I’m wondering how busy the Costco is now a month after it opened
It's not, Chinese people that go to these western stores go for the cheap and free good but after a week the hype goes
Costco isn't sending anything to Costco in China. China got blocked up, I work for the Distribution. I saw it, they removed the location number on the shipping lane.
It's still popular, they came under fire recently because of the crowds gathering during Covid.

moo....

I never been to Shanghai but I'm so surprised China didn't have Costco until now.
Can you show us the biggest Super market similar to Costco?
I used to think Costco was from China, but I must have gotten it confused with Cosco.
the sam's club have earlier accessed to china market than Costco
I rather pay more yhan waiting inline all day....that is why i usually pick night hours to shop....when i am the only 1 during shopping
Costcos in Canada have amazing fries/poutine. Also, a hotdog and pop combo costs like 2 CAD.
In Toronto, it's $1.50 for a hotdog and a fountain drink.. You're right, the poutine is really good.
In america land you get whatever the hell the cosco employess want to give you
$1.50 in Greater Toronto Area, but 50% chance a goose will attack and rob you from your hot dog
I love how a lot of Chinese people cancelled their Costco membership once the store ran out of beer
I don't think you need a membership for alcohol or prescriptions. That's how it is in Hawaii.
Costco has the best return policy, when you bought somethings, then it goes on sale like coupons, you can get the sale price adjustment.
You're a great youtuber Simon :) :) :)
I love your videos :)

Been to Costco in Taiwan and US but it's empty and yes it's cheap.
I love the sushi and grilled chicken
We go to Costco in the US for cheaper prices on bulk items. People don't generally do their normal shopping at Costco.
You have to factor in more items such as income etc before you can decide price value
I have never seen that much people at cosco before not even on the opening in Australia
I love Costco, probably my favourite retail store.
Crazy, crazy. I would never go to Costco with this many people.
I work at Costco in Massachusetts USA and I could not even imagine how insanely packed it is there! That’s just mind blowing to see!
I live on cinnamon raisin bagels, rotisserie chicken, and Kirkland Trail Mix (all items at Costco) - Great video Simon!
Wow!! So many people! Its not as busy over here in the UK.. And sadly no Chanel either... We have much to learn 😂
That's almost as busy as my local Costco. Make sure not to forget the 10 pound jar of peanut butter.

Pork belly? We eat it as bacon. Preserved and smoked. Served at breakfast or in a sandwich. About $7 a pound.

So that's 125 RMB/kg, wow a lot more expensive than Shanghai, which state is that?

pork belly around 3.99 USD a pound in Texas , USA

Costco has a reputation as a good employer in theUSA. Crazy in the U.S. too on special sale days.
R U kidding me?! Please, open a dollarama in Shanghai. I want to see how that goes...
All things in dollaramas are from China. so I guess it goes with immediate shutdown
2Kg Of pork belly is about 8 to 10 euro in my local butchers in Ireland.
That's awesome. I wonder if they have a food court with cheap hotdogs and pizza like they do in other countries.
How did you learn how to speak English so well ? Good job my friend and great video , love that you let us see China from an English point of view .

Hi Simon, could you talk about healthcare in China? Occasionally we have news stories about it, and it would be nice to have your perspective on it.
Finn Hansen actually I was referencing conflicts at hospitals, access, that kind of thing.
More reasons why I love Costco better than Sam's club!
Yes, during the holidays.

Simon Yu...I live in canada and the pork belly pkg. Is nineteen dollars.in costco.

Is there American stuff at Cosco China?
Pork belly slice 5.99 per pound. 在加州,而且因為火鍋肉是切片,會稍貴些
Looks like a normal sunday at costco in cali
It's market strategy, they will make some products really cheap even with loss, so people come and buy that along with some other stuff (probably little expensive )…
Good to see another US corporation not buying into the failing trade war. Losing Chinese market access would cost them $500B in yearly revenues.
Right now pork shoulder is 1.85lb but when on sale it's .99lb
I heard that the supermarket pork in Shanghai is 600 pounds, Shanghai Costco pork more than 400 pounds, the quality is guaranteed. So everyone went to grab it 🐷🐷🐷🐷
Congrats to you guys for getting a Costco lol hopefully things are less chaotic. It can be an interesting place sometimes
