I’ve been watching these Japanese shoebill videos for a couple years now and I think this is the first time I’ve seen them behaving this way. I wonder if they’ll be able to get them to mate.
6:18 at first I thought the male decided to break the standoff and behave friendly, but then I saw the human behind him and realised he was just reacting to the keeper :(
I would say that yes, the keeper broke up an upcoming attack/fight - shoebills like to be alone and don't get together besides mating and caring for their offspring, no matter if in the wild or in a zoo. This is also the reason that the 4 shoebills in Ueno Zoo (where this video was taken) are currently in a separate cage for every shoebill. The bill clattering is a way to communicate, just like bowing down, and in this case it's most likely that the clattering was meant as a positive gesture to the caretaker and not towards Millie.
Do shoebills show in the wild also this behaviour? Or do they do this because they cannot choose a mate? There is only one female.
This is my favorite video.

Territorial argument! Looks like bullying 😢

What a scary encounter. 😲

So that's it! Thank you for your polite explanation.
