- This week, Ben describes the time he was sent to a Christian camp that didn't have a nurse, which turned out to be his near death-sentence. Ben woke up to a severe neck sprain and couldn't move at all. The counselors decided to start a prayer circle around Ben's bed while he lied there motionless. While the other campers got to enjoy all the fun and food, the counselors wouldn't let Ben go home and receive professional medical attention. So after a few days, Ben was healed up enough to plan his escape.

I was raised Methodist Christian, and you are absolutely right! Most Christians are really kind. It’s just those extreme bad apples that ruin the community for everyone 😕

Here’s my ✨I almost died ✨ story
I was at summer camp when this happened, which made me want to write this since Ben was at summer camp lol. I really like archery, and of course I had to do it at camp also. I was actually good at it, too. I had this blue bow that took a lot of strength to use, and since I was the only one who could manage it, it was pretty much my bow for the week. (Keep in mind this was sleep away camp) I was on my very last arrow for the day, so of course I had to hit a bullseye like come on. So I drew my arrow, and held it in place with my left index finger over the arrow. Really felt like katniss everdeen right here. When I let the arrow go, My hand HURT LIKE A SWEET BABY SQUIRREL. I didn’t really realize I had just been SHOT BY A BOW AND ARROW until I looked down and (gore warning ig) saw my hand just bleeding freely. Ofc I was oddly calm and collected when I told the counselor I needed to go to the infirmary. She was the opposite. She was shouting and yelling and freaking out over me and I was just like
👁👄👁 Long story short, when I went to the infirmary (not going to the hospital 😀) some creepy kid asked to watch the nurse clean my hand and such. Ew. This was also towards the beginning of camp, so any water activity (because every water thing was in a lake with bacteria) I had planned I couldn’t do. It SUCKED watching people while I sat on the docks and cried (😀) Eventually I made peace with it and chilled in arts and crafts. Side note, my hand hurt about 10x more after the accident than during. I would also have to go to the nurse every night, which gets into a whole other string of stories. Well, that’s how I almost died, I guess. Little bit of a stretch but it’s ok :)

Okay. I know nobody likes the peeps who decide to make controversial comments, and I know I'm gonna get blasted on here, but here we go anyways. First of all, I am super sorry Ben went through all that pain, and there is no excuse for the counselors behavior. He really needed medical attention, and for him to not receive any was completely unacceptable, I completely agree. I literally can't imagine what I would do in his situation. But let me just say this, this was definitely a bad experience at one Christian camp, but for those of you out there who are like, "I'm never going to a Christian camp" after hearing this podcast, please know that not all Christian camps are like this, and more specifically, not all Christians are like the counselors there either. There are some really great Christian camps out there such as the Wilds in N.C., or B.J.U. camp in S.C. who are tons of fun. Not all Christian camps are judgmental, uncaring, etc. and many have medical help always ready and available. In fact, my mom worked as a nurse at a few different camps in her twenties, and gave medical attention to lots of kids. I myself have gone to several different Christian camps, and I'm always given the medical help I need if something happens. As for Ben being judged for his unbelief, that also was unacceptable for Christian Counselors. As a Christian, I believe that it's God that should do the judging, not us, especially bc just like everyone else, Christians also sin bc we're human. And speaking of judging, I'm not sure that this camp was genuinely Christian bc of the fact that the kids had to confess their sins to a priest. The term "Christian" is used loosely in a lot of religions. However, genuine Christianity does not believe in confessing your sins to a priest. I feel like that camp must have been catholic or something. As a Christians, we believe in the message of the Gospel, and talk directly to Jesus to confess our sins and form a relationship with him. Anyways, all that to say, don't let one person's experience at a Christian camp be the bad apple that turns you away from going to Christian camps, or Christian people in general.

i attend catholic camp each year but because im on the 2nd oldest bunch. (there is different weeks for the different ages) and basically we can have our phones in our bedroom, and its really chill even though we pray 2 times a day, but the leaders and people are hella cool and its not strict at all.

Here is my ✨ I almost died✨ story
The night before my 9th birthday we had a celebration with cookies and ice cream. That night when I went to bed (TW mention of throwing up) I woke up projectile vomiting. I also had a pain on the lower right side of my stomach. My mom said it might just be gas and we would see how I felt in the morning. I woke up and still felt that pain. My mom checked in with my doctor and she said we should go get it checked out. Me and my mom were praying it was just another bladder infection. The lady at the hospital turns to me and goes: “okay, so do you know what your appendix is?” Me and my mom immediately knew. We drove to the next hospital which is where I got the surgery. I wasn’t allowed to eat or drink in case I threw up. (Mention of needles) I needed to have a needle stuck in my arm to put water in me without me throwing up. I went into surgery a couple hours later. Then they woke me up at four AM to check on me. ✨the end✨

Ok, this has happened to me before, or at least something similar. One morning I woke up, turned my head the tiniest bit, and heard a loud snap, like a LOUD snap, and I fell back. I thought I broke my neck too, lmao. It took a few days to feel better, but turns out I had slept on it weird, messes up a tendon or something, then when I woke up, I moved it to the right side after it not being moved that way for hours.

10:30 i had the same thing happen to me in school randomly like 3 years ago - i was just doin my thing and i couldnt move my head like my neck hurt so damn bad and it just randomly happened, no clue what happened (it was on a friday the 13th too) and lasted like 1-2 days

i went to a church camp literally in the middle of nowhere in nebraska and i literally cried myself to sleep (quietly of course). my best friend was there, but it didn’t help really, and i literally was yelled at so much and i ended up getting slapped once like and it freaking hurt

My friend got a similar pain in her neck last year, during a soccer game. Thankfully a girl on our team was a chiropractor(?)

Alright, I have a very similar story. I’m not sure if almost dying at Christian camps is just a universal experience, but whatever.
So anyway this was a few years ago, around 2018 or 2019. I was sent off to spend a week at this Methodist Christian camp, (it was actually a great experience, and even though I’m not very religious anymore I still miss it) and everything was going great until the last day. This was the day we were all supposed to leave, and shit started as soon as I woke up.
That previous night we had slept outside in hammocks, and it was pretty comfy, for the most part. When I woke up, my head was pounding and my vision had completely blurred over. I got up and instantly felt nauseous. I decided to get up and take a short walk to see if that would help anything. It did for a short while, besides the throbbing pain in my head. When we all went down by the lake to sing a few songs and say our goodbyes, a shooting pain branched out from my chest. Breathing hurt, standing hurt, and the blurry vision came back. Some girl who was standing next to me saw me grab my chest and start crying. Now I don’t cry very often, so if the pain alone was enough to make me cry, it was hella bad. She asked me if I was okay, and I just shook my head no. She ran off to grab our cabin councilor, and another girl was trying her best to comfort me. The councilor came up to me and took me away back to the cabins. She called my parents and told them what was going on. The problem was, I lived over 2 hours away from the camp, and they were still home. So I was told to sit tight and wait.
When they arrived, I was told to leave immediately so I could get some rest. The drive home was okay, as the chest pain had subsided. However, the nausea came back and there was still an intense pounding in my head. Fast forward two hours and we arrived home. My mom took my temperature and turns out I had a fever of around 107, (df) and she immediately called the ER and gave me some Tylenol. They told us that if the fever didn’t subside soon, they should bring me to the ER. The fever went away relatively quick, so I wasn’t rushed off.
Long story short, that was the day I found out I most likely had a heart attack, and the fact that I’m prone to chronic migraines.
the symptoms were off and for a few more days… that was the worst week I’ve ever experienced.

I was at a church camp and it was at like a Christian college and I remember we had to swipe cards to get in and i kept forgetting what way to swipe it and I remember all the girls that were in my dorm had gone to like the pool or something idk but yeah I had to go back to the room and I went to the wrong room and I knocked on the door and there were girls in there and I thought that they were the girls in my dorm and I was like hey it’s hannah and they were like what and then I realized it was the wrong dorm room so I get to ours and my card wasn’t working and it turned out the repair man came to fix our shower Bc it was broken and he had a card to get in so I just went in the dorm and grabbed what I needed and left

I go to a catholic school and when something bad happens some teacher says “we will pray” and I try not to laugh and now when something bad happens I always say “I will pray”

So you got a neck cramp at that time in order to get rid of that you need very strong painkillers or you can go to the doctors it has happened to me once and I was rushed to the ER.

I went to Christian camp as well lmao and about the third day my eyes just started tearing up and they burned SOOO BAD. They kept on watering and watering for HOURS and the whole camp was a cowboy Christian camp that was OUTSIDE the whole time. My eyes were already burning and it hurt even worse under the sun. But the adults wouldn't let me go to the cabins and wouldn't gimme anything to help but ice😆. Anyways i think I was allergic to the sunscreen cus it only happened when I put sunscreen on but yea it happened for like two days straight it was 90% outside and we were outside all day and they wouldn't let us wear tank tops
