I know this video is old by now, but may I say, you have the most information on lures out of all the videos I watch on youtube! I started fishing regularly last year and I watch your vids weekly.
This is the best channel to learn from. Like no joke, don't even bother searching for other channels that compare. Just look through TB channel and find the video because I promise there's a video for whatever you're looking for and the video will actually teach you what you need to know.
Nice job as always - Do you tie direct to the eye of the popper or use the split rings most come with? Also, I think you are using mono what Pound do you prefer?
I literally just figured this out on my own this morning messing with a top of the line popper I got as a gift. Taught myself this one lol. Love walking baits
I have found that the Booyah Zell Rowland Prank Cranking Popper has superb action and versatility for a very cheap price. It spits rather than chugging or blooping which helps in the spring when the fish are a little timid and a little more reluctant to commit on a surface lure. You can make it spit and on the end of that spit you can use it as a shallow crank/wake bait/ jerk bait that’s subsurface. Really helps when the fish are in prespawn or when the water cools off in the fall. Thanks Matt!
I actually bought a Lunkerhunt Kraken Popper and changed the hooks out. That thing walks super easily and I slayed on my first day out with it. Your tips really helped me out
Funny. I just had and excellent Popper bite on the Rico last week at Don Pedro. Just like you stated in the video. they were rolling on the spook and not committing. Then I decided to downsize and try a popper. I hadn't thrown one in years. Like magic, it was game on. Excellent Video. You guys always deliver.
Thanks for the tips Matt. I am responding because you are scaring me when I look at the facial sunburn you are getting from being on the water. I have a tip for you. My dad used to fish on the water all the time and now he is going to the doctor almost every 6 months to have skin melanomas removed from his face. You have a heavy sunburn beneath your sunglasses in this video and you are heading down the same path as my father. Please use your fishing bandana or hoo-rag everytime you go on the water. You will thank me later on in life... I guarantee it!
Love that tip at 3:50 about your transition to the rover... on the other hand what are your ideas/tips about transitioning to a bait like a rat/frog or jitterbug/hula popper ?
"new intro" and "finally" it top water time ... im so ready throw some hooks on me and I'll do the breath stroke thanks Matt thumds up quick question at 7:30 with the narrow pocket how did you decide to throw in the middle of the cove instead of fan casting from shore line to shore line
Enjoyed the hell out of just watching you cast into the pocket. You cast that popper into a striper boil on the Delta and it's the 'fish on every cast phenomena'. It's so fast and frantic you have to sit down and take a break after 20 fish. It's a crap load of fun and by 'crap load' I'm referring to the birds that crap all over ya in the boil zone. You can easily tell who found the boils at the end of the day lmao
Always use popper when the topwater is on here in GA. Heddon makes a Pop'n image in baby bass color that is my go to popper. Last Bass was 7lb 14oz. this April 17th. These are around $6.
Informative as usual and I might add that a more forgotten topwater is the prop bait. When is the last time you tied on a Wounded Spook, Torpedo, or Nip-i-diddee? And I would like to add that the Matzuo popper(probably discontinued) outfishes all the other low dollar baits that I have ever used. Last, not all poppers walk equally well. More elongated poppers with just a bit of weight toward the tail is helpful to get a walking motion. Storm's Chug Bug comes to mind as a good moderately priced popper that walks pretty easily. Thanks for your ideas on presentations that work for you.
I found you can drastically change the sound and action of a popper such a Rebel POP R by shaving the lower lip. Between that and going with a rear hook with little or no feather on it I found it easy to create the tight side-to-side walk that Matt describes. Also on a normal retrieve a popper modified in this way spits more than plops.
I'm the opposite of most guys, since I own spooks and poppers, but prefer the poppers 98% more. Basically everything in this video I've figured out, done, and still do. The reason I prefer the popper over a spook style bait is because of how effectively slow you can use a popper and still grab that same drawing power as a spook. I honestly feel like I fish spooks right over the heads of most quality bass because they aren't willing to chase down the spook. If the popper your using creates a nice solid "splunk" or "thunk" on the pop, I've noticed I match or beat the drawing power of a spook. Plus it just gets bit with no questions asked by the bass since it just looks like such a nice, easy meal (especially referring to the wiser, larger bass.) I catch dinks on poppers, but honesty my majority on them is 2+ pounds or bigger. Great video Matt and Tim! I'm glad I'm not the only one who gets the popper and its effectiveness very well. (Shhhh.... my favorite is the classic Rebel Pop-R ;)
I have almost zero confidence in any popper unless it's the Rebel Pop-R. I have one that has no more paint, cracks, and it still outfishes the fancy, more expensive poppers. I prefer when it makes a consistent, snappy splash over a deep "thunky whoosh" sound.
I just caught a 5.75 lb. bass yesterday in eastern Pennsylvania on the smaller size Rebel Pop-R. It was the perch colored version and I didn't even pop it once, she just nailed it on impact with the water.
yea a lot of people don't throw them anymore. I love them. I have caught a couple of my biggest bass on poppers. Another old bait but good one is the devils horse or cotton cordell version boy howdy. and crazy shad. lol dang. now I gotta go place another order. lol
You're giving my secrets out. Good video. There's actually a lot more you can do with a popper. It is one of my favorite lures. I prefer the Booyah Boss Pop (previously the Xcalibur Zell Pop) over any other popper. It's extremely versatile and not too pricey. It has quality components and excellent paint jobs.
been using this method of walking a popper sense I saw this video and it is working very well for me in the South East. "academy sports popper" on a medium action rod. thanks for sharing these tips!
I seen braid was used I also throw braid but I use a mono leader 10lb. Do you recommend a leader or just straight braid? Love your videos always get something out of them!!
Thanks again from Idaho! Iwas fishing here in a SNOWSTORM yesterday32 air 57 water temps...killing it on a "blade....6inches of Snow last 24hrs.....At least were getting bit here.......Its still PRE-SPAWN here! CRAZY Year....were first spawn in June!
Just bought the new bfs alderberan, I was curious do you find the 10lb braid digging into the spool? I was thinking about going ten pound to a leader so I could fish finesse and a popper, but was advised against it by some friends saying the line would dig into the spool.
I caught tons of fish on Hula Poppers as a kid, and more recently, the Rebel Hopper Popper has worked well thrown near overhanging trees, cattails or tall grass banks, especially in farm ponds. And I love walking topwaters that have a cupped face like the Chug 'N Spook and Gunfish. But for some reason I've never done well on the narrower, minnow style poppers like the Pop-R. I've tried a variety, and fished them fast and slow, but all I get are swipes or panfish pecking at them.
Thank you very much for the helpful video! Could you please tell me what the popper you are using is called. I would like to buy it. Where can i buy it from? Ebay or amazon? And not sure how to buy it because there are many kids of poppers on amazon and confused thanks
I recently started throwing poppers using a 6'6 all star rod that I also use for jerkbait. I have 12 lb yozuri flouro....could I be using braid instead like Matt is in this video? If so, what size braid?
Hello everybody so I'm new to fishing my question is how do you throw your topwater bait 2030 yards out without a sinker I've seen several videos of them throwing their topwater bait far but they don't show if they use sinkers or not what are you guys recommend
Been using river2sea bubble popper on a lew's smash 6ft6 thought I was the only one out here walking the dog on a popper then a buddy said check out tactical bass you guys rock 😂😆
I myself used to always throw the popper, I used to catch a lot of fish on it also. However it was too slow for me to fish, I never thought about walking it before, thanks for the tip. I just might have to start throwing it again. Stay safe and tight lines.
I can hear you are using a leader with your popper. Can I ask what size leader you're using? I'm assuming it is mono but why would you choose a leader over throwing it with straight braid? Thanks!
Hi mate! Adorable vid! I'm new in the topwater-stuff...i only fished spoons and spinning lures for the last 20 years - mostly for trouts. Now, I am bored from that stuff and I decided to begin the topwater-fishing. You, sir, helped me getting used to topwater- fishing. I bought a bunch of poppers...7cm (should be about 2,5 inches?). Do you think, that I can get some trouts with it? I got the Abu Garcia poppers...can I walk the dog with it? Best wishes from beautiful Austria!
Hey man great video! Hey I keep loosing fish on the popper, it has become my favourite now for the summer here in CT. What can I do to land these fish? The last 2 days I have lost 2 really good fish.
Probably varies on where you fish, but I'm a strong believer in the "let the rings fade" thing. 90% of my popper fish come after I've casted as much UP as out and it lands with that nice plop and I sit and DON'T MOVE IT AT ALL until the rings have dispersed completely. Some of my biggest have come after letting it sit motionless for a minute or two. I'll find excuses, cast then tidy up the boat a bit with a free hand. It's SLOW but if you know you're on the fish, a great way to get the smart ones. Then I'll give it a couple tiny twitches and sit. Most times if I haven't had a strike I'll start working the bait but from that point on the average size goes down and I'm more apt to get the 2-3lb aggressive Smallie opposed to the Grandma who's seen it all. So my actual retrieve is a bit quicker, I'll hammer it a few times making a large commotion then back to the dying twitches as sort of a reset on that cast if I'm on the juice, if not I just reel in to start again. Great vid man. Poppers/topwater, simply doesn't get any better
I definitely enjoy throwing a popper, gonna have to see if the ones I have will walk decently or not. Were you throwing straight braid, or a mono leader?
"Better paint job and a lighter wallet" :-) I lost my breakfast on that one!! You're going to have to excuse me while I clean myself up.... thanks Matt
I still throw a Heddon Chugger Jr. to this day. (now we know im old) It's my go to anytime I fish. And yes, walking them works great. Thanks for supporting my thoughts.
Every year there's a bait you pull out of retirement and mop up with it. This year it was the Pop R for me. I kayak fish, so I take several rods rigged with what I expect or want bass to bite. If the popper isn't already on a rod, it's in the "utility box" I took along so I can switch to it. Multiple fish over 3 lbs this year, the biggest being 5.2. Here's a tip: I rarely catch anything on it outside of shaded areas. Sunny areas only seem to work for this bait when bass are really crushing bait on the surface. And even then, they'll strike short a lot. But it will catch stripers and white bass during those times.
Hey Matt, sshhhhh!! 😜 I get a lot of jokes about fishing poppers, but you're spot-on -- I've caught some big'uns (to me) with em... I love the Rebel Pop-R's but I usually upgrade the hooks; the more expensive poppers do have better hooks, along with what you said (finishes & appearance)... Pop it like a pimp, brother!
I'm having problems breaking jigs and Texas rigs off after converting to throwing braid to a leader... was using a 7'3 mh with 50lb braid and 17lb leader the connection knot holds but I keep breaking of at the hook any tips????
sutton3z need more info: 7-3 MH but what Action is the Rod? 17lb leader, what type of leader line? Jigs and Texas rigs, what gauge hooks? What type of hook set are you using? Are you breaking off on all the knots you tie? When you do catch a fish does the first quarter inch of line directly in front of the knot appear to be weakening or slipping (shocking)?
I love fishing poppers, and the Rico is definitely my number one. I just want to mention, with respect to colors, you must try the Lime Ice, especially around smallies--it's deadly.
I know this video is old by now, but may I say, you have the most information on lures out of all the videos I watch on youtube! I started fishing regularly last year and I watch your vids weekly.

I really need to learn how to cast like this guy!
nothing beats coffee and tactical bassin before a long day
Riley Fisher hell yes
Just had me some fancy Carmel coffee n a video! Ya buddy
Thanks for the video I’m curious on trying them
Matt, as always, great job showing, explaining and teaching!
New intro is DOPE!!!!!
Hi LOJO I’m a big fan
420 Bassman what
Lojo what’s my friendly fisherman I’m a fan can u do a video of buying someone’s whole tackle box and using that box do smoke them !!

Sorry to hear about the car accident glad to hear that you and your pops are ok.
Killer VLOG for sure Matt. And you are so right. Nobody throws them no more. Again thank you

I always have a popper tied on. One of my favourite baits. Usually a rebel pop r or a strike king splash
How did you throw poppers so far ? It's so light It doesn't go anywhere for me?
AWESOME. What pound test line do you use. THANKS ??
Love that tip at 3:50 about your transition to the rover... on the other hand what are your ideas/tips about transitioning to a bait like a rat/frog or jitterbug/hula popper ?
new intro is great fellas. also it's awesome that you guys are putting high end, med, and low budget combos. keep up the good work
"new intro" and "finally" it top water time ... im so ready throw some hooks on me and I'll do the breath stroke
thanks Matt thumds up

Busting out the old popper. Love it thanks Matt.
Love the new intro! And I never thought to walk a popper. I'm going to have to try that soon. Thanks again for all of the great content!

Hey I was wondering if you still cut open the huddlestons and put superglue around the inside

quick question do you use a loop knot or direct connection on your poppers
Can it “pop, lock and drop it?”
Do you use a loop knot to help you walk it better ? Also what your thoughts on line braid or mono?
Really dig the new intro! Just got the Booyah Boss Pop in my MTB Pro so I'm excited to give it a shot.
I'm the opposite of most guys, since I own spooks and poppers, but prefer the poppers 98% more. Basically everything in this video I've figured out, done, and still do. JTBassin Northeast same rebel popper
JTBassin Northeast same rebel pop-r and rapala skitter pop = deadly

chug bug is a good one too.. but i use em to catch walleye at night
I just caught a 5.75 lb. bass yesterday in eastern Pennsylvania on the smaller size Rebel Pop-R. It was the perch colored version and I didn't even pop it once, she just nailed it on impact with the water.

How are you casting that far!! I’m using same popper but and 4 pound braided line is it my bait caster?

yoy were right. I never throw the popper but i also didnt know yoy could walk them either. What braid size do you use match line?
Just bought the new bfs alderberan, I was curious do you find the 10lb braid digging into the spool? I was thinking about going ten pound to a leader so I could fish finesse and a popper, but was advised against it by some friends saying the line would dig into the spool.

I get the same results from cheap, as I do with expensive. It's having an understanding of the fish and your waters that makes all the difference
planned on going fishing this morning, definitely going to try the popper
Do you use the stock trebles on the Yellow Magic?
I do until they start to dull. But overall those aren't bad hooks.
K thanks.
Matt do u fish braid straight to the bait? I run about a 2ft mono leader.
Hula popper is the best, the original, and the full black ones and the perch colors do the best for me
Great video man! love throwing poppers especially the pop max. walk and pop it
Yay a new intro!
I feel like poppers are a lot more popular up north in MN. Maybe because rapala is popular up here.
this vid should get you some of the subs you've been looking for. good work
Dig the new intro and great information as usual Matt!
Been using river2sea bubble popper on a lew's smash 6ft6 thought I was the only one out here walking the dog on a popper then a buddy said check out tactical bass you guys rock 😂😆
Nice Vid ,btw how do you tie your popper what's the rig setup thanks
Check the video description for the gear. But if you mean the actual line its braid with a blood knot to mono, tied on with a palomar.
Thanks!
"Forgotten" is right. I remember throwing out some wooden hula poppers and killing them!
Semaj O. I have like 20 of those hula poppers
Edit: wood not the plastic ones today except for 3
I just ordered the NRX except in the medium heavy version hopefully I made the right choice
those you are showing are all I use and have great luck with them
Hey man great video! Hey I keep loosing fish on the popper, it has become my favourite now for the summer here in CT. What can I do to land these fish? The last 2 days I have lost 2 really good fish.
If you had to choose 3 poppers what would the colors of the bellys be?
Poppers/topwater, simply doesn't get any better
thats how i was taught to fish it.. love the new look and intro dude!!!
I definitely enjoy throwing a popper, gonna have to see if the ones I have will walk decently or not. Were you throwing straight braid, or a mono leader?
great video add a loop not for more action good luck this year keep videos coming thanks Tar heel bassin
Definitely a great numbers bait. Thanks Matt
what size line are you using? and if braid, do you use mono leader?
All the details are in the video description of this and all our videos. However, on this one I forgot to include that I was using a 10 lb mono leader
What size Yellow Majic do you throw more 1/4 or 1/2?
Is there a lower end water temp to conisider?
"Better paint job and a lighter wallet" :-) I lost my breakfast on that one!! You're going to have to excuse me while I clean myself up.... thanks Matt
I still throw a Heddon Chugger Jr. to this day. (now we know im old) It's my go to anytime I fish. And yes, walking them works great. Thanks for supporting my thoughts.
section around 8:30 pov was great helped, me get a feel for how to work it
I had to subscribe man one of the best channels hands down!
Thank you so much!!
Welcome!

Already over 27K views. Word is out on you guys. You're blowing up! Congrats!
Thanks Bud!
What size rover? I'm guessing the larger one?
Dude your casts are so far you can not even see the bait! Sick set up . Great video
Nice fish
Love it learn so much everytime I watch a video
loved the excalibur's but looks like booyah bought them out. Have you tried them since excalibur sold out?
Hey Matt, sshhhhh!! 😜 I get a lot of jokes about fishing poppers, but you're spot-on -- I've caught some big'uns (to me) with em... I love the Rebel Pop-R's but I usually upgrade the hooks; the more expensive poppers do have better hooks, along with what you said (finishes & appearance)... Pop it like a pimp, brother!
Nice Job Matt. I'm also a big Fan of that Yellow Magic Popper. Kills south of the border. What's your leader in front of that Sufix 832 ?
❤❤ Sometimes I miss the simpler times.
What baitcaster are you using?
I greatly totally AGREE bro they're the most deadliest top water lure on hook setting and catching bass
I'm having problems breaking jigs and Texas rigs off after converting to throwing braid to a leader... was using a 7'3 mh with 50lb braid and 17lb leader the connection knot holds but I keep breaking of at the hook any tips????
sutton3z tie a San Diego jam or uni knot
I tie the San Diego jam and still snaps
sutton3z need more info:
7-3 MH but what Action is the Rod?
17lb leader, what type of leader line?
Jigs and Texas rigs, what gauge hooks?
What type of hook set are you using?
Are you breaking off on all the knots you tie?
When you do catch a fish does the first quarter inch of line directly in front of the knot appear to be weakening or slipping (shocking)?
Mr. FatBasstard 17 flouro all knots I've tied and on jigs. and fast action

Absolutely. Definitely good practice to cut back and re-tie after a couple of fish.
I love fishing poppers, and the Rico is definitely my number one. I just want to mention, with respect to colors, you must try the Lime Ice, especially around smallies--it's deadly.
awesome video as always. I have no confidence in any top water as I have NEVER caught any thing on any top water. I keep trying though
Your turn is coming!
small tight pops.. not big kablushes
one of my favorites to throw..good stuff Matt
Poppers are the only topwater I use fluoro with. Gives it a deeper "clug" sound. Just gotta keep the line from catching the hooks.
Is there a way to hold the bass without it flinching and getting hooked
Great video guys! Please do more fishing with the gopro chestmount. If you do more fish catches on video, it would be epic!
just like wow,how far are you casting that thing
