"I value a 60 card deck by how well it can be made into a 100 card deck." This was too funny to me because I JUST bought the Golgari guild kit on Friday with the express purpose of using it to build a Meren deck as my first commander deck ever :)
I just built my own Izoni Aristocrats/Dredge-ish deck, and I can't wait to try it out! I love the resiliency of Graveyard decks and I'm a sucker for making tokens and smashing face, so this was a nice happy medium for me. I got all the standard Ari stuff like Blood Artist, Falkenrath Noble, etc. that can abuse sacrificing to drain my opponents, but if that doesn't work a good old Overrun effect will work with my token army to hopefully overwhelm my opponents. Voyager Staff, Temur Sabertooth and Roaring Primadox are all good ways of blinking Izoni for multiple triggers, and billions of tokens. I love that there are multiple ways to win with this deck, and I'm definitely gonna have some down n' dirty fun with the swarm!
I've started to build my Commander deck in black and green and I'm using both Deathreap Ritual and Moldervine Reclamation as getting either on the board can be significant card draw. Izoni going wide with lots of insects with Reclamation essentially doubling the effect is too sweet to pass up on :)
I'm currently running a version of this deck. It's my OG EDH deck and I'v been tinkering with it since day one. Still don't have all the cards mentioned in the video. One of the problems I'm predicting running into is milling key cards, mostly instants and sorceries but also enchantments - into the graveyard. It's a lot easier for this deck to reanimate creatures than other things and sometimes I lose my Wilderness Reclamation until I have the chance to pick up Golgari Findbroker or Nyx Weaver. Sorcery board wipes are even harder to get back so it's a roulette whether you'll have them or lose them. Still running those though. I love Izoni, but running a creatures-only deck is too boring for me. I like to spice it up even if I lose consistency. Need more testing.
I bought the guild kit and one golgari 25 card booster and was shocked how much it jumpstarted me into a quick budget commander deck. it's my first edh build and I'm surprised wizards actually had products that helped me out
Love the Mortal Combat card. I’ve never heard of it before. One huge recommendation is Gnaw to the Bone. Normally life gain isn’t that good but with this deck, gnaw to the bone is phenomenal. Same goes for Spider Spawning.
So FYI: Here's the breakdown. DJ's deck contains 10 cards from the Golgari Guildkit (excluding lands). Today those 10 cards are worth $11.29 and the Guildkit is costs $22.64.
But those lands though...I literally bought the rest of the lands that I needed to add to this deck. You get the pin too, and I was thinking there were some other cards that could be sold...but that was a while ago.
Living Death is very budget-able. You are running black. Plenty of grave hate to choose from to support it. Could also be a budget elf with black fireballs and sac stacks.
Wow that's nuts. I use this Izoni deck with some changes, maybe 4-10%, and I still only get about 15 creatures in the GY by the end of the game. That involves board wipes and some slight help from dredge and all that.
I must admit that I like Izoni, but when it came down to it I had to just add her to the 99 of my Meren deck. A lot of cards that work from that deck and this one overlap and I didn't want to build two decks that were so similar. Way easier for me to cast Izoni from the graveyard.
I played Meren, Sidisi and Muldrotha. Its fun when everything is moving smoothly and turns ugly on you. Some player played Bojuka Bog on you or cast Rest in peace. Sometimes we forgot our competitors wants to win and their a pain in the butt and vice versa to them. Fun games and funny but cruel adversaries. LOL..
This deck list is very similar to my Sidisi, Brood Tyrant Deck, except that Sidisi nets you zombies as well. i added Izoni as one of the 99 and she is amazing. Regularly coming out with 20+ insects. Add to that Vraska, Regal Gorgon's ultimate and Jarad. Golgari Goes BOOM! I don't think I'd swap Izoni for Sidisi though. Sidisi is just too powerful an engine.
I was stuck between Izoni and Sid when I was brewing. While Sidisi does give you access to blue (making the self-mill plan that much better), I just love that, with Izoni, you don't have to devote slots to protecting her since all she really needs to do is etb, AND you're actually going to get a token for every creature you've milled along with every other creature in your yard, unlike with Sidisi. Albeit they're 1/1 insects instead of 2/2 zombies, but that doesn't matter so much if a big part of your gameplan is to use them as sac fodder anyways.
So I've got Deathrite Shaman in this deck, but I don't really feel like he's doing much good. I don't feel like it has much effect in edh to do much in this deck. I haven't actually played it much less had it in my hand to play, but it seems underwhelming to have to tap it to activate it once per turn to add 1 mana, or ping everybody else for 2 life, or gain 2 life for myself. I can see how it'd be good in modern (hence the ban), but I don't see it doing much in my deck. That being said, not many people I play with use fetches besides EW/TE and one here or there, and they usually don't have ways to bring them back. Of course, the C18 commander has changed that for some, but I still don't feel like it has a place in most decks. Change my mind? Give me your stories please.
Deathrite shaman can be amazing, but it depends on the meta that you're in. For example, in my playgroup, almost everyone plays fetch lands like evolving wilds, or cycle lands like ash barrens. Not only that, my playgroup also has a lord windgrace deck on the table at all times. So, in my case, deathrite shaman is almost always free mana of any colour, at the cost of only 1. I play a 4 colour deck, so deathrite shaman has almost always been a great way for me to fix my colours.
Izoni seems pretty fun as one of the 99 of many golgari deck : Meren, Jarad, Mazirek, Sidisi, Muldrotha. ... after reading this quick list out of mind I just realised just how many graveyard deck there is in this format :/...
Have they fixed the card stock quality on packaged MTG preconstructed products? Been awhile since I've bought any, but I used to notice the cards in those felt glossier/thicker compared to those in regular packs. If this is still the case I'd be hesitant getting the guild kits.
I've considered that, at least for the creatures that are bigger when you have more creatures in the graveyard or for creatures like Multani. It feels bad when they're 15/15 or so without trample. Jarad's Orders can help get that too, or Final Parting, which is a bit expensive to cast at 3BB. Crap, I guess I need to find my Brawn now.
I wonder how that'd be. I'm not sure, because you'd have to really set up to get the same kind of value. Presumably you can build up experience counters with Meren over multiple castings so by the end you can for-sure bring a creature back to the battlefield from the graveyard and have it immediately do something decent. I'm not sure that it'd build enough value as just part of the 99.
I mean, think about it. If you're spending $100 on a Commander deck, that's $1 a card, on average. That's not bad at all for a format that has access to the most cards out of all the formats
woah no mention for creakwood liege? it's in the deck yes, but this card over performs so much in this deck, izoni makes g/b tokens, cast izoni with undergrowth of just 5? with creakwood liege that is 15 power in tokens plus a 4/5 izoni and creakwood makes a token everyturn creakwood liege and path of discovery are huge overperformers in this deck (also krav what a stupid sac outlet he is)
i haven't watched the whole thing yet but "Izoni needs to produce many, many insects to be effective" i'm just going to say now, don't think izoni has to be hardcore dredge, as a matter of fact, maybe don't even run dredge, izoni gets value out of being a sacrifice outlet that draws cards, i usually cast izoni and get 5/10 tokens i've even cast it with less, she draws cards she is good, sure you can go hard on dredge, but then you cry when you verse anyone who has a bojuka bog/rest in peace/rakdos charm or whatever it is they exile graveyards with, izoni is best as an aristocrats commander, cheap creatures that sacrifice themselves for value to fuel undergrowth (not saying dont' self mill, just saying don't think you have to cast izoni with 20 creatures for izoni to be good
I prefer the original izoni art... which is weird all the guild kits I preordered have arts I do not prefer over the OG art...but the once I would never buy obviously have good altered art. i think the new izoni art is to bright and i liket the body compostion better in her og pecie.

I love that Izoni makes a lot of tokens at once, rather than one at a time. Also, it's great to see such a fantastic token commander in these colours!
More Budget EDH decks!!!!!! Love ya Jumbo 😍😍🤣❤️❤️

I was playing sidisi, brood tyrant and domed my last surviving opponent for 24 with lotleth giant. Good times.

fuck it, I am getting the guild kit exclusively for the basic lands
Im trying to build a creature only Izoni deck (still playing lands for the funny ones, but no other spells than creature ones). It's kinda clunky.
Excellent video, as is the standard for you!
...jumbo chamander i love you

No underrealm lich? Kinda feel like it would be a monster in this deck since it lets you take whatever you want.
It's kinda expensive .... but it will drop at rotation so we should all keep an eye on it

Great videos thanks!
Get a Triumph of the Hordes for that sweet one turn infect kill
One video idea: build commander deck using the upcoming guild deck cards ;)
Birthing Pod is not in the decklist. I thought it was fitted into the budget ?
Same goes for Krav, the Unredeemed. Can't see those two anywhere in the decklist
Damn I might build this!
for me the guild kits all scream turn me into Guild Commander decks.... which is exactly what I'm going to do with them.
Unfortunately, even DJ can't get me excited about Izoni. Fun video though! (Where is Jarad? 😮)
Jarad is in the deck.. and I prefer him to Izoni, by far!
@@Muztrix99 He must've sneaked in while I was making food 😂
@@nicholassalamone770 He never mentionned it. But when you look at the deck list, Jarad is there

I run world shaper and ruination in my mind deck. Blow up all the non basics, sac my homie, profit.
Budget, golgari and fun, what a wonderful combination of words! it looks really nice to play, great work.

Lotleth Troll? You mean Lotleth Giant, yes?
No brawn? Good card to include to give everything trample plus giving izoni that +1 insect token

love your definition of "budget" being 100 usd, but neat deck
Hans-Markus it’s a 100 cards it’s almost impossible to get a deck under 100$ that might have some synergey
i would not disagree that this usually is correct, but;
