I watched your video and have never looked back !!!. Have not purchased bread in months, instead I make it every morning. THANKYOU !!!!!!
wow that makes me so so happy!
She doesnt mention the amount of ingredients! And what is chapati flour?
@@Fai9aalTS hi buy atta or chakki atta it's chapati flour.
For whatever amount of flour you start with you only add as much water to bring all of the flour together in the bowl basically nothing left in the bowl then put dough on counter and give a good kneading about 15 mins.
Oh I forgot put in some salt into the mixture.
@@iainwallington474 What does the salt do? Is it just for flavour?
@@Dreamskater100 yes salt is just for flavor it's optional you can leave it out put some chilli powder in or whatever you want
For years I made nice chapatis, sometimes 200 a day in a restaurant. But never have I seen anyone puff them that way, without moving to hold over an open flame. Thank you so much for sharing that elegant tip!
Puffing it up directly over flame can leave them a bit undercooked from inside..as it puffs up fast that way.
Probably the best video I’ve seen , I’m learning how to cook , this is my first step. Having recently lost my mum and currently going through a divorce I want to make food like my mum used to for my son.
Looking forward to watching more
Good Luck to you Paresh😀
Good luck making these. I hope you are already (at least) a little better!
I can only recommend to try to make some fries or potato wedges yourself. It's not that hard and there are some good videos! 😄
Am I the only one that just thinks her voice is really soothing?
Thats sweet, thanks!
assassintwinat8 I think she does!
I know right!
I think so too
very smooth. great video too, ive subbed.
You can tell Chatna can really cook, by the way the roti rotates as she rolls. 100% proof she's not just a RUclips chef.
Every self-respecting Indian girl learns how to make round Chapati! 🙂
@@katherinewolfe Indian women have elevated the skill to an art form. 😅New aspirations unlocked.
CHETNA DI ... BEGINER AT COOKING , AT THE AGE 54 ... WATCHED LOTS OF OTHER CHEF'S RECEIPE BUT NOT CONVINCED , AS WHAT MA USED TO MAKE FOR US . A SIMPLE WAY .
LOST MY MA IN NOV 20 20 AND YES YOURS , IS THE WAY OF , MA'S CHAPATI MAKING . 100 % PERFECT . 🙏👌✌👍
When she rolls it and it SPINS AND STAYS ROUND! What manner of sorcery is this!?
Its the shape of the rolling pin that helps, wider in middle and tapering to each end (see 1 minute 22 secs onward & look closely)
"It's a kind of magic !" ;-)
Comes with practice
It is a dark wizzardy from school of cooking.
Thank you Chetna. I made my first chapatis today, some with white flour and some with spelt. I am pleased with the results. 🌸😊Alan
That is super Alan
To avoid hard chapatis as you finish cooking each one quickly brush on butter (I use one of those brushes used for oiling a pan) then immediately place the chapati in a plastic bag and seal the opening. I just use a heavy object like a jug to close the opening quickly so I can resume making more chapatis. The heat of the chapati creates steam in the plastic bag and that keeps them soft. I add each chapati to the bag as I make them. They never become hard doing this.
Perfect
Such a classy lady :)
I want u to do chapatis for me😓😓😢😢😢
I love her energy...she makes me happy!
Thank you
Hi there! I know this is an old video and you're probably not reading these comments, but just wanted to say thank you. I tried your method and.... it was not too great the first time. I then called my mum and got a few pointers (make sure the make it really thin, etc) and tried again. I can't believe it! I legit made my own delicious chapati!!!! :D
I have been making chapati for years. Takes a bit of practice but they are delicious with so many foods. Thanks Chetna.
My pleasure 😊
Hello chetna .. thank you for your delicious recipe I am 33 years Mexican American married a Fijian who loves his indian. Food thank you for all of your work your recipes once again :)

I just love her voice, makes me want to watch more
Thanks Gloria
Oh wow. This is another way for me to make one of my favorites foods, chapatis. Can't wait to try it. Thanks for posting this video.
Years ago, I could purchase frozen chapatis at the grocery store, but they’re not available anymore ... so I switched to bread (Ugh).
I recently decided to Google recipes and they all seemed a bit different.
I was then led to this video! I love your voice and watching you make them. I’m excited to try them myself.
Thank you so much.
Enjoy
Best and most well explained without any loud music or ranting thank you for sharing
Elegant rolling technique. Lovely to watch.
👍🏼👍🏼
You're the first chef/ cook I've come across that makes them exactly the way I do or been taught. Only exception is I use almost boiling water.
Thank you very much for your wonderful presentation. Learned a lot! You are a great teacher and communicator.
In Texas we eat tortillas. I was introduced to chapati in Uganda and loved them. Can't wait to make my own now. Thank you!
I stopped to make chapatis, because I couldnt make them fluffy and sort of papery in the middle (because I didnt "puff" them) and it was drying out so fast (because I didnt let them rest). I tried your recipe and it was awesome! Thank you very much, Im making these with Masala made according your recipe . Its soooo DELICIOUS!
Hi. Thank you for this amazing video. I have everything in place. Do I need to oil the skillet before putting the mix on or can it be dry ?
For most of my life I've wondered how to make chapatis puff up like that. I'd had mixed results with various recipes, but I tried yours and 5/5 chapatis puffed up perfectly. I think it was the technique you demonstrated, more than the recipe. Thank you.
Glad I could help!
What a brilliant video, well presented and uncomplicated, thanks Chetna
plain and simple the way you presented it..Thank you
That's really filling me with nostalgia! 🥺 Cooking that on a tawa. Using a damp piece of kitchen towel around the edge. I didn't realise how easy it is to make it either
So easy
A most charming presentation. No nonsense.
thanks
The tea towel trick! Brilliant, thank you! I’m making these tonight with a dhal.
Thank you, the tip with the damp cloth is excellent.
Looking forward to trying these, really enjoying your presenting, could watch for hours, intreguing watching you roll out the chapatis, must get the right equipment, like the hot plate, so glad you made the video for Jamie's Food Tube. Thank You Chetna.
I'm so glad I found this video! I don't have a gas range and could never get my chapati to Puff up. But, your trick has changed everything! Yay for flakey buttery goodness!
I'm gonna be weird here, your hair says your maybe over 40, your calmness says so too. But your face and energy says 25! love your recipes!
Hair is naturally grey, still very young :)
thats premature grey. but she does not use any hair dye to hide her white hair, she likes to keep grey hair which is natural. By the way no one has grey hair NATURALLY, but rather to say like this, your hair has turned prematurely grey, may be bcz of hereditary problem or stress or worries, Are you a gujju? I liked the way you made your rotis.
@@Baresi-Unico-Capitano Outside of Italy, we'd call him a wanker.
@@FoodwithChetna love your hair
👍
Spot on. Thank you Chetna. Looking forward to trying this out 🙏🏽🌈
indian studying in london right now. I used to make rotis (used a roti maker but still had the basics down). eventually I stopped and my relatives would make bundles of roti for me to freeze. really excited to make rotis now for some reason. but don't have a rolling pin or wooden board so looks like I'll be pressing them into funny shapes with my hand haha. so excited.
Yes why not, you can roll it on any smooth surface and try an empty wine bottle to roll.
Very nice n perfect receipe explained clearly in details with sweet voice...👍
Thanks a lot 😊
Thank you Chetna! I bought some chapati flour today and my son and I have just made some dough which is resting ready for cooking :)
Thank you for this Chetna. I have to make these later. My friend and his father taught me how to make chapatis when I was younger and they said that I did them well. I have not made them in15 years.
Wow hope this video will help you recreate them after 15 years!
Watched this video and start to make chapati first time rather then buying from shop let’s see how is it goes . Such a classic lady good explanation 👌
Muchas gracias , practiqué unas cuantas veces y por fin me salieron, riquisimos
Thanks
Thank you Chetna! Blessings and gratitude to you.
Superb presentation. Very helpful. Thank you.

Thank you so so much!
1:18 it went from a flattend roundel into a thick chapati almost magically even before you began rolling. :)
Looks amazing, I love Chapati!
Thank you for a clear and easy recipe 👏👏👏
you are welcome
Thanks for the short and quick video.
You're welcome!
I've made it once before!!! And it actually wasn't bad. But didn't know how to puff it up. Omg so happy to try again with your technique. !!! and yay. Loved you on the bake off! :)) thx!
Thanks, hope your chapati will puff up this time.
kurdishgurl11 is that self rises flour ?
Thank you for this simple tutorial. Was looking for something i could share with a German friend.
Just one question. I've grown up watching and now making the phulka directly on the fire. I will try your 'final stage' method the next time.
They looked so good!
wonderful. Can you bake these if you want instead of frying on pan?
Sadly not
@@FoodwithChetna interesting. thank you!
Nicely explained. Thanks for the tips on storage as well.
Only just discovered your channel this morning. Looking forward to giving this a try along with your aloo and spinach curry :) PS - love your hair! I have a couple of friends that are really grey but they keep dying their hair dark brown, I wish they would give it up and be au natural x
Thank you so much for your detailed video!
Great video.
Looks simple
My first attempt was a massive fail and so I’m glad I have found your video! 🙏🏻
Gave it a go this morning and used 1 cup of wholemeal flour just to give them a try. Well, they are not soft nor hard and good flavor though; I guess I put the right amount of salt... I will keep trying until they come out super soft and for x reason only one of my chipatis puffed up. Thanks again for this nice recipe and yes I will keep trying.
Do try and hope it will work soon, if you dont have chapati flour then always mix a bit of plain flour to your whole meal otherwise it will be too heavy and wont puff up.
Thank you for the tip and your reply
Very helpful. Thank you
Another great video!! Do they freeze well? My kids love wraps for lunch at school & it'd be great to batch make these once a month.
I am not much into freezing but my friends say they freeze well!
I have frozen chapatis and they do freeze really well.
Awesome. Thanks for this. What kind of flour do yo use tho?
Just wanted to say thank you for this super simple recipe! I made these last night and they were a big hit.
Those look warm and yummy!
they definitely are!
I just saw your Veggie Curry video on the Jamie Oliver's channel. I did not know you had your own channel. I am happy I found it!
I wanted to make dinner for my family I chose an Indian dish which had chapati your video really helped me there thank you so much
Good and clear instructions. Thanks!!!
Thank you so much for the lovely recipes! I watched you on the great Brittisch bake-off and you were great. I am looking forward to trying your recipes. I am not a big cakes fan, but I loooove Indian food! Cheers!
+Margarita Petkova Also, I live in Germany and there is no Chapati flour here. Can you please tell me what it is made of? Buckwheat or some other grain? Thanks!
+Margarita Petkova It is just wholewheat flour!
This is just wheat flour but milled differently, if you can't find it just use wholemeal flour or plain flour!
Thanks Chetna. I finally learnt to make soft chappatis.
Ah, there's the puff! It's like magic, isn't it? 🙂
it sure is magic
Thanks for sharing!
my pleasure!
Do you live in Northern Ireland? Your pronunciation of "flour" sounds just like my mum's.
(if so this is beautifully ironic since I as an NI guy have just started to learn Hindi)
Dhanyavaad!!
Beautiful lady. Beautiful explanation. Beautifully presented

Great video Chetna! This really helped my chapatti making skills ☺
that is great news!
Hi, this looks simple, thank you for a great demonstration. Can regular flour be used? What is added to flour to make it chapati flour? Thanks!
Chapati is traditionally made with whole wheat flour.
Thank you, so nice! Im going to do it today, very eager to try.
Such a awesome way of explanation and presentation..
THANK YOU for this video - I've always felt intimidated by roti, but definitely going to give them a bash this weekend now
Happy cooking
I still am intimated by them.
Thank you so much for this short and amazing video. I tried it and chappati came well (though i got different weird shapes :P) Im in europe and couldnt call my mom as it was midnight in india and tadaaaa.. you saved my day :D
