  • When asked what positive habit helped me achieve a self reliant life the most, I would have to say it was the golden hour - waking up early and getting a jump start on the day. In this video, I show the many video clips and photos I have taken during the first hour or two of the day.

It baffles me how people can be so negative towards such great content. If you don't like it, dont watch it. It's not like you're forced to watch these types of videos. Once again, thanks for the great content Shawn. Will definitely be making use of that golden hour(s) this summer!

Many studies of happy people who live the longest share this trait of getting up early. All his life my dad followed this, and while cancer (from asbestos) took him at 76, he never varied in this. Had a good breakfast, prayed, got the day off to a healthy start. I'd say your advice is very sound. Not all of us can follow it--jobs that require being a night owl or whatever, but I know you're right. Thanks to you, at least more people will look at the beauty of that hour. Thank you.

Good morning! This is day 14 of my golden hour journey. Even without a camera trained on photo subjects each day this regimen is taking on an unsuspected momentum. I love this new found practice. Thank you for the suggestion. I am keeping a journal of observations, sketches, quotes and weather data for my geographic location. It may appear inconsequential to anyone else, but my hope is that one day someone down the line will discover this journal and find a glimpse of me between the pages. As for myself, it will serve as a measure of where I am in a year from now. Perhaps I will continue the practice; perhaps not. We shall see! Good journey to you today, Shawn. 🍁

Yes, "The Golden Hour" became my keyword of the rest of my life. I've thought that when I had the first shot of beer of the day was the golden hour but it's not anymore. Even I have my home in the city I would be able to find some beautiful scenery in the golden hour you saying.

Your the man brother. You should have you own tv show for people that take the things in life for granted.
Ever since I've started watching your videos I've hit a point where I look back and realize how much of my life I waisted. Now at 35, I'm trying to make a change. Not just for myself but for my kids. My two step kids that are almost adults and my youngest that is my blood. I don't want them to be the everyday cellphone zombies that media has made our youth. I'm a medically released combat engineer and it breaks my heart to see how the children and adult of our generation take everything for granted. You are a true outdoorsman and I give full respect to you..... 👍👍

The evening golden hour is my favorite, especially in the summer when it lingers. Last week I drove westward across much of Colorado/Wyoming during the golden hour(s). From the 1st inkling of dusk to the last moments of twilight, I had probably a good 3 1/2 hours of golden time. This was followed by the Strawberry Moon, which kept me company the rest of the way home. It was a lovely, healing time for a mama leaving her 19 year old 'baby' boy in a new place. Thanks for the reminder of the other golden hour I don't make the most of.

Hey Shawn I was taking in the golden hour three days ago watching three bucks trying to cool off and feed in the marsh across my lake. They looked amazing in their summer coat and velvet antlers. All this was as it should be until I took a drink of my tea. Three deer flies had nearly drowned in my team and were buzzing in my mouth. I should have remembered to put a coaster over my cup not under. Lol Canadian summers you have to love them.

Years ago when I built up my trade business I used to plan my day ahead during the prior evening and consolidate those plans as I lay in bed ready to drift off to sleep with a renewed updated mindset for the next day. I would enjoy that and it gave me an overall awareness and focus of what I could accomplish. It may just be a plan of which order to carry out the decorating and/ or carpentry jobs for my customer, to greatest mutual benefit and time efficiency for me. This could often mean getting the job finished succinctly within the hours of say, three working days neatly within a time I allow myself without sacrifce to quality or the standards I expect of myself. Instead of taking another part day by failing to plan, and not having the chance to move on with another customers' job fresh in the morning. So losing an afternoon. I really didn't like that. So I would plan as far as possible, and if I hit an unexpected hiccup, at least I was ahead of my game so to speak and could cope or drag the issue onboard and deal with it more quickly. I really enjoyed the feeling of planning ahead. Although it was a simple working environment. I used to go home and before eating or socialising, sit at my desk in the huge bay window of my Victorian style flat above an Alternative health centre who used to do lettings. I would type up my quotes on a cranky old Adler electric typewriter which I kept using and replacing the ink ribbon on, because it gave a professional looking text to type on my letterheads. (We didn't have pc's or word processors and, when they did start to appear they were so expensive that the prospect of paying for something like this would make me think I would haemorrhage!!) I was happy with the simple typewriter and didn't need much else. Then I would go see my prospective customers who had made enquiries with me or come to me through a recommendation from other customers, give them my quote, discuss and close the deal with them. Your idea sounds much more aesthetically pleasing where you are in those beautiful surroundings. That great outdoors scenery you have to put up with Haha. Lucky fella and deservingly so.
What I am curious about is that.... when I use my new "Shawn James type Golden Hours" how will I fathom ways to generate income which give me the long time longed for and yearned for return to the days when I had control of my life when I woke up in the morning? How do you manage to generate income? That time in the cooler, less clement seasons when you create ways of making income which, presumably tide you over sufficiently throughout the rest of the years too? Am I presuming correctly? Please say so if I get it all wrong.
Shawn I really miss those days when I would wake up early, as I do now, but with a fervent excitement about my choices for the day based on the experience of how that delightful state of mind and the experience of it every day would bring good results for me and those around me. People who were my customers used to often thank me and would recommend my service. I could see it even as I plotted my customers' locations on a map! Apart from occasional references they would make to the fact that I should be getting a call from a member of their circle of friends or a family mamber. I was delighted when I would hear: "Thankyou for your professionalism". I still get customers in my current job working for someone else, phoning up and giving me commendations through my colleagues. The fundemental difference between then and now, is, that back then I had a house I bought and let rooms in it. I had plans to build up a decent property portfolio (You call it a real estate portfolio I believe). I had a rented workshop which was as cheap as chips to rent and eventually got that for some motor trade work when my decorating and carpentry business dried up when the last of the tradesmen came into the market placing their tradeservice adverts in local advertsing media, seeking work after the last bigger tin mines closed down finally back in the late eighties. Some were genuine and some were 'charlatans'. All needed an income of course. Prior to that and meeting my ex, it was a great time for me because I was in control of my life and I did not need a PAYE job (Pay ((tax)) as you earn) as we call it. Nor did I have any intention of EVER needing such a thing. The thought of working for someone else was abhorrent to me, and inappropriate for a guy like me who had completed business courses Dof E medal.and, had been increasingly successful being my own boss. ( I recall in the beginning of February 86, I promised myself I would buy a house within the year!!!!!! I managed it! At least I got exchange of contracts in November and 'Completion' on 3rd January87 So, in principle plans work!! ) Later I met my daughter's Mum and found myslef at the mercy of planning consent sculduggery and false claims by the envious neighbours. My childs mother had a penchant for secretly acquiring willing sperm donors and had a super time in secret. So that didn't work out. Later I met my ex who had the somewhat narcissistic attention seeking, personality disorder which hadn't been diagnosed so much as even recognised by any of us as laying under the surface as a rather unsettling B.P.D. (Very common I am given to understand) Oops meeting my ex was the biggest clanger I could have dropped it seems! Big mistake! Duped! Yup. Crafty and surrepticious? Yup! Silly choice? Apparently yes in retrospect. But, hmm, I did care very much for her and, unless we choose to take the time and hopefully have/build a trust in a relationship, we may never find one.. I am still a romantic.Always will be. Still a believer. Always will be...So the girl better be ready for me!!!(Like a line in a song of a couple of years ago: She aint seen nothing like me, yet!!) and and I'm out of any state of mind to look for traits similar to those of my ex. I see better now, with hindsight. Yet even though we can always look back and surprise ourselves that there is something to be learned, I am now concerned not to look over my shoulder at the past TOO much for risk of tripping over something bad OR good, in front of me. Hmm something which after all may be a welcome turning point. And! not a moment too soon if it is to be so!
I'd love to know how I can generate income for MYSELF and not look to a job to sell my time SO bloomin' cheaply. I spent HOURS AND HOURS looking over the internet at opportunities until I got fatigued with disappointment. But I just know there have to be things which I can earn with, which will excite me as much and be as easy to start up as my first self employed venture as a carpenter/decorator!!! Those days brought a euphoria that I MUST have fulltime again before I am done on Earth. I just know it made me a little bit nicer person a better friend and a more effective achiever. What I am doing now just holds me down. It holds me back. Shawn you may be a bit younger but I could benefit from knowing your experience of overcoming hardship/obstacles and WHERE the best ideas are in todays E-world. Input welcome.
When I used to be my own boss and plan my work/my day ahead. I used to find that it was plenty to do! When I hear that you read, answer messages on here, edit miles of footage on various amazing camera set-ups as well as do the family thing, also, the highly entertaining form of carpentry which IS Shawn James Haha. Eat, cook, wash, sleep, and STILL have time to canoe, hike, hunt and enjoy your surroundings, I wonder how the blazes you aren't short of breath when you have the presentation of those reflections. (Which I simply have to add... Are amazingly helpful to others in ways beyond the bevity of those minutes on video. You are to be warmly applauded soldier. Though I think you must have a T.A.R.D.I.S. (time travelling machine as of Dr Who on BBC tv of many years...in case you haven't heard of it) How do I begin to do so much in one day without Thousands NAYE millions in capital??!! I mean WOW friend! I used to succeed years ago with what I called a 'Postive cashflow' approach to running my business. I had minimal equipment and only made my relatively low end cxapital purchases of tools or special tools when I absolutely had to. In the mean time I would find logical and economical 'get-arounds'/ 'work-arounds' and use a bit of extra 'time' and 'elbow grease' until it was no longer viable without the special tool I needed due to frequency then making it the cost effective decision to buy.
When I think of my own experiences then and now, I wonder how you get it all done!! I am sure your dear Mrs Wifey must be helping BIGGGG time, brother of another mother!! Howd'you do it all?? Kindest regards and wish you success every time. You deserve it bro.

If only life was that simple...... But it's not. There are lots of people functioning best at other hours of the day. True: it's a very peaceful, quiet and serene time so it can help you get in the same mood or accomplish a lot of work. But for me the challenge is to find that peace and quiet and serenity everywhere and at all moments. I don't succeed, but I keep trying and I don't think getting up early will get me any nearer to that goal. I think I'm getting what you're saying but life is much more complicated Shawn.
