I now rely on this channel to buy board games. It so nice to see it explained so I know what im in for. Also great tutorials for learning rules. Thanks!
Love your videos and pace. Especially how you have the play-through and then have a separate video for final thoughts. Reading rules is one thing and doing my own solo play-through can take up more time so I really appreciate your efforts.
Richard, just noticed a major playing error and wanted to make sure your listeners were aware. I also picked this up after my first solo playthrough to learn it and thought it was a bit powerful playing as you have. That is playing cards - once played are discarded not retained to use next turn. Page 8 of the rules: "After you resolve the Bonus card, place it on the face-up discard pile on the Caravansary" - whoops on my part as well. :)
Istanbul ... Εις την πόλιν Istinpolin = To the City during Byzantine time Constantinopolis was the major city so people calling it just the City. So the name Istanbul still has something from the previous history.
I do not understand why there is 16 tiles but you only throw 2D6. Shouldn't you be throwing 2D8 at the minimum? Also, how the merchand supposed to go to the Tile 1 or 13-14-15 and 16?
the tiles are designed so that the most common rolls with 2d6 are the fountain and other spaces that are less commonly gone for, and i think that's part of the design, that the governor & smuggler will tend towards those places more often to make them more attractive. so if you were rolling 2d8, that would shift the probability of where they land, and it also means they'd land on 13-16, and that would make them too powerful, to land on the most powerful spots, I guess...
Hello. I want to ask. On the prison and inn cards. It's like a card. Which has a yellow star on it. And in the instructions it says to play. Action or card? What action is it exactly?
hi there. sorry to say it's been a lot of years since i've played so i don't remember specifics like this. but if you ask at boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/148949/istanbul/forums/0 you're sure to get a solid and complete answer :)
Is this game kind of like Favor of the Pharaoh? In both games it looks like you roll dice, and choose some path towards gaining resource that allow you to reach a goal; in this game, get 6 gems, in Pharoah, getting 7+ dice to win the "Favor"... either case, you are rolling, possibly re-rolling, gaining resources or powers that allow you to gain more dice, repeat... to reach some goal. This game look a little deeper than Pharaoh though.
Love that dice rolling tray you got there! I bet it helps with a board like this where you could cause destruction with dice rolls lol. And loved the look and feel of this game - another one to add to the wish list :) ps- thank you for singing at the start - when I heard the name of the game that was also in my head!
15:00 - when Jen moved to the fruit warehouse, wouldn't it have been smarter to move back to the starting space, blocking you from going to get your pawn, and letting her get closer to the jail, getting your assistant white and releasing her niece?
I have to imagine Jen would be a great roleplayer. You have mentioned (table top) RPG's in the past - have you/Jen played or play currently? I'm a big fan of them, hence the question ;)
***** Oh wow, well I could not recommend it more. If you ever get a chance - know someone who might introduce you to it - you might consider giving it a try ;)
From a Turk's point of view: They could have used actual names from Istanbul, instead of Sultan's Palace or Large Market. Feels rather generic for a game that takes place in one of the most iconic cities of all time (... which has admittedly turned into a bloated shithole).
iirc there was a russian publisher looking to localize the game for their market, and they decided to make subtitles and submitted them, and i was happy to have them :)
IMO this game was just incredibly boring. Do this, so you can collect this, then use that to collect that. It is the equivalent of an Oscar-bait movie, but in this case "Make a euro game to win the Spiel de Jahres". Pick an "exotic" location, go back into the past slightly, make it safe and friendly for all, collect the things to get the points.
+Zoef Boef To see the game in action. Even with some minor mistakes, it gives a good sense of how the game goes. How much you can mess with other players, how much each mechanic comes into play, etc.
I got this game after watching the run through and I just played with my boyfriend and we loved it!!! It was so close. He won by 1 gem. ARGH!

Haha! "Riffraff, street-rat, I don't buy that. If only they'd look closeeerr!"
Thanks for the video!!! Watched it and went strait out and bought the game!
I played 4 games 1on1 and now Im back with old games, How it is for you ? Have you already played it 1/1 or 2+ ?
You are great :) This video helped me to understand the game. Now I'm ready to play it for the first time :))) Thank you! :)

Dave Gray can you please tell me the timestamp where that happens so I can make a note? Thanks

It's also a pretty good song, especially the They Might Be Giants version
Finally Istanbul. I was waiting for this!
12:24 That's a move to the left, not the right, unless Jen is sitting across the table from you. :)
lol love the opening richard
Love the explenation, made it so much clearer. Also love the womens take on the prison and rehabilitation part :) haha!
Thanks for clearing up movement, the rulebook is not very clear about picking up assistants and interacting with the board.
Hi +rahdo just wanted to say I love your reviews! I like your energy and clear explanations!

People just liked it better that way

hmm, if i were to pick between the two, i'd probably go with pharoah, due to it's wider setup variably.
wow. I love the board.

well, if you mean the fountain space, that's the one tile that no one has to pay to go to, no matter how many other players might be there :)
I heard the digital version is going to be ported to Nintendo Switch. Gotta try the Steam version first.

neither of us have, actually...

...someone needs to Run Rahdo through D&D! (Sorry, couldn't resist)
+weemcast If Rahdo had someone to introduce him to D&D he probably wouldn't solely play 2 player games... just sayin.
weemcast cool
They Might Be Street Rats
Even old New York used to be New Amsterdam...

TMBG FTW!
great
It made sense :)
How come this video has Russian subs? (O_O) and I must say they're really good.
iirc there was a russian publisher looking to localize the game for their market, and they decided to make subtitles and submitted them, and i was happy to have them :)
Caravansaries don't make caravans.
cheated @22:32=P

Why the hell american players can't stop using the word "bucks" for every kind of money? It's turkish lira, and helps you to get into the game.
in American English, 'buck' is a universal term for money, so it's equally applicable to any form of currency.
man, whats the point of watching your video's if you dont bother to follow the rules of the game?
+Zoef Boef indeed
