Eventually while he was drunk, he tried to force himself on a girl and another guy had to defend her.
He was kicked out of his accommodation. Eventually he moved to the same block I was staying in and I considered telling everyone what he had done but also wanted to give him a second chance cus the victim avoided pressing charges for a similar reason.

@@snowblind9290 best case scenario he learned his lesson. The thing that sticks out to me in your story is that the first models just saw a glipse of the man's creepiness... to me it can already start from here : if a girl feels weird around the guy she needs to talk to other models around her that work with said photographer to corroborate such things from the beginning before it's too late to prevent a "true victim"... worst case scenario the photographer is bad at human interactions and the girl who was suspicious can still apologise for the misunderstanding... I apply the same with grooming kids in churches : if even JUST one kid in church talks about inappropriate things done to his person, this accusation needs to be taken seriously from the beginning (presumption of innocence is still a thing but this happens to many times to NOT be extremely cautious about nowadays)

I tend to keep to myself, but I was friendly with him and everyone else was always hanging out with him even while people knew about how much of a pervert he was, we didn't take it seriously and as a result someone nearly got raped. We were all so fucking stupid.

You know what sucks? Im in my early 50's, I have always kept up to date with tech, music and modern norms. I'm a gamer from when space invaders came out. I was super nerdy in my teens but forced myself to learn how to interact with all types of people from different social groups. My mind has stayed young, I feel about 30ish I guess. While I worked people could not believe my age, because I well just treated people normally and liked to have a laugh.
But now my hair is greying, my beard is grey and people can be stand-offish. This fades once we get talking.
But I am aware of it. If I say hi to some kid with their mom, they look startled. I saw some high school kids playing a collectable card game in the library and was peering through the glass to see which game it was, and I suddenly knew how that must look.
People like this Bright person makes it so that people cant trust older folk with honest intentions and young minds. It makes me feel awkward and uncomfortable. Oh well, life I guess.

I've been a lurker and occasional interacting member on the site for many, many years, long before the "nude pics for applications" joke, and he was pretty well known for being a creep. I think younger people would be shocked that it went on so long with it being such an "open secret", but it comes down to what was common back then. An older guy being inappropriate online with younger people, directly or just in their vicinity, was sadly common in most online spaces. I think it's only being addressed now because we've gotten go an age of transparency where the staff know this could actually cause issues. Especially now that the SCP Foundation isn't the tiny community it once was but has hit the mainstream. He probably won't be the only one, and I have to imagine some of the people who did the whole "Oh, he's just like that" when teens complained are feeling a little nervous now. But this whole thing is a testament to what online communities were in the 2007 - 2015 era, in particular.

In a slight defense of lovecraft, he's often misappropriated as "racist" when it was actually a lot worse than that. Due to a lot of things that happened in his childhood, he was downright xenophobic. And not like the prejudice kind, like the actual mental illness kind where literally anything that wasn't like his childhood room and house was cosmically terrifying to him. So I always tell people to go a little easy on him, because he wasn't an asshole, he was just *very* mentally ill. We also have a lot of evidence that he started getting better almost immediately after just, you know, going out and experiencing the outside world that terrified him so much.
It probably didn't help that there was a lot of *actual* racism prevalent at the time, from other sources and probably a lot of his friends. The validation certainly didn't make it easier for him to get better.

No, quoting drsherms video the character itself is creative commons, we the community can do essitentially what we want with the character.
AdminBright does NOT equal the characters behavior and vice versa. Bright (character) basically belongs to the community- though bc of the site rules in the creative commons rule iirc we still have to link the original page of the character file and give a credit to the author (while I disagree of giving a c///nt like AdminBright credit it's still needed as far as I'm concerned).
But the character is free, folks like tiktok bright (a british comedian cosplayer) is not affiliated with AdminBright. Same with anyone who roleplays, kins, hell have a system (DID/OSDD) member whose an introject, they arent to blame here at all. It felt right to mention the last sentence here.

  • @VoidOfWord
    @VoidOfWord 2 года назад +62

The fact that it took so long before banning him was a mistake, 100%. As someone who is part of an online community with leadership roles and moderation staff, I understand how this mistake was made.
In a community, people naturally respect seniority when it comes to making any kind of decision. “They we’re here first, they probably know best.” That idea breeds hesitation when it comes to newer members questioning the actions of earlier members.
But, there are other members who have been around just as long as Bright. Interactions for these members can be affected by many things, but the main two I can think of here would be responsibility and activity.
Bright had a number of responsibilities related to new members. This is a pretty significant job on its own, as the results can be directly seen within the community as new accounts are made. If the job is done well, others may feel a bit hesitant to call out the person who assisted dozens of active members. And if the discrepancies occurred far enough apart, they could seem “watered down” by the sheer amount of unremarkable activities by comparison.
When this environment is presented a sudden, blatant offense like requesting/receiving pictures, vulgar messages, and abuse of authority, the obvious decision to take decisive action gets choked by crowd mentality. Many of the staff members are probably thinking the same thing “I would ban him, but that’s not my decision to make,” or something along those lines. Everyone wants to, but nobody wants to be the first to say it, because they feel like they don’t have the individual authority to make that decision, and they may doubt they’re own judgement. So, when everyone waits for the first move, it never happens at all. Since a decision needs to be made, a more neutral decision is easier to agree on. So the problem gets “addressed” but not “fixed” allowing the problem to eventually pop up elsewhere.
In this situation it’s important for everyone to hold each other accountable, and encourage others to do so as well. If a higher authority does not exist above the one in question, than a role needs to be assigned that determines what level of behavior is acceptable. This is basically the reason behind HR in companies. The role is usually pretty undesirable, though, as it tends to put a social barrier between them and other members.
In this environment, filled with a authoritative ladder of increasing growth, a natural inclination towards shocking/mature topics (such as the horror/sci-fi genre), and a haystack of activity to hide discrepancies in plain sight, mistakes become much harder to prevent.
Yes, it should have been halted right at the start. Now that the staff have been made aware of the issue for what it truly was, hopefully it can be prevented from here moving forward.

    • @yossipossi
      @yossipossi 2 года назад +21

This is the most nuanced take in this comments section, so I think I ought to say that, as a newer member of the Anti-Harassment Team that helped make this call, this is indeed exactly what happened.
Bright was, by far, the most powerful and influential admin on SCP at the time. He still held immense influence and connections until and even after his retirement. It was incredibly hard to hold him accountable, even with rumors and creepy/weird past behavior. I'm glad that AHT agreed with me to make the correct decision in the end.
You're right in that this should have been halted at the start, but at the start, the SCP Wiki was full of 4channers who normalized this behavior, and the Wiki was small enough that no one cared. As it's grown, it evolved naturally, which in some cases resulted in good things (like a culture of accountability), and in some cases bad things (like extreme bias and hostility from staff). We're in the middle of a major staff restructuring right now to try and fix our broken systems, and I'm personally working on a better staff structure to try and fix this mess we've been handed from the last folks.
Thank you for your comment. I hope that we never have to deal with another case like this again, because hopefully we'll have gotten rid of all of them already.

The only other thing that could be done that was not mentioned would be to rename Bright, ala Cole Cassidy in Overwatch. I'm not opposed to this, but I'm also not sure if that would help. It's also a different situation, the Blizzard employee that character was used after was not at all ticked off by the naming to my knowledge. Just to add a more light-hearted convo for people who are a bit too uncomfortable after watching the video (I certainly am, and I am not usually triggered/bothered by these types of topics. I can't imagine how it must be if someone who is decided to watch the video):
If people decide to rename the character of Dr. Jack Bright (which I doubt they will, but it is always a possibility), what would you want it to be? I kinda like the idea of Dr. Max Life, because it is both ironic and gender-neutral (even though most refer to Dr. Bright as a guy in their stories, some use she/her in stories while they are in a feminine body). What do you all think?

Remember to separate Bright, the writer, from Bright, the character; don't let what the writer does ruin the character.

I wrote for the wiki years ago and I still plan to produce works in the future but it was wrong what they did and I didn't know anything about that.

Okay, i hope the character doesn't get hated on because of the author, cause I've grown attached to the fictional bright, well I'm glad that the fountain did the right thing and ban him i hope everything is better now 🙂

As someone who has only been on the site once or twice, and just watches youtube stuff about SCP. This is fucking insane and disappointing, like i didn't even know that characters like Bright were also real ppl on the site, i had a pretty strong vibe that they might but I didn't know. So now to have the fun character tarnished sucks, nothing compared to was the actual victims suffered obviously but he also ruined a bit of the SCP world for everyone

i remember messaging YossiPossi about an issue on KaktusKontainer in which a user published an article trying to expose SCP staff for allegedly "running a pedophile ring". authors such as kaktus, bright, ARD, etc, were attacked by the user. now, i can understand why Bright was targeted. in my opinion, he should've been banned off the site years earlier. however, as far as i or Yossi are aware, there's no pedophile ring being run in SCP wiki staff. this, however, is a belief and theory out there.

So Dr Bright character has some basis of Dr Bright RL… Some how I’m not surprised. Never looked deep into the running or people involved with SCP. I’m more about the lore… but if it’s causing RL problems, then it is what it is. 05 Counsel gonna 05.

"Don't make yourself into a bad person, while trying to be a good person." is so needed in todays world. So many self righteous people making life harder for others. not to get political (but I will real quick), the religious right has tried so hard to be pious that they are now affecting the majority of people that don't see their own worldview. This video was measured, articulate, and evermore prescient. Thanks Dr. C! One of my favorite quotes of all time now :)

Honestly it amazes me that Kiwifarms, the bigoted, racist, transphobic etc etc forum were one of the first to come out with that info while most of the defenders who was involved, regardless of political affiliation, ignored or covered it up under the assumption that they weren't speaking any truth.

Problem is though the SCP foundation is cesspool of lefties and I can tell that y'all probably are too you do realize most of the people on the right would just leave you alone if you didn't ruin all of our entertainment and maybe if the SCP foundation wasn't so busy being political they could have caught the creep earlier oh well I guess the information eventually catches on

Never knew Bright to be like this, though him telling people to buy a dildo and a yoga ball was probably not helping
Though, I believe he was doing this to get people to stop asking him details of either the SCP OC and the Actual Person... And i also believed it to be him jesting about

I'm only just now learning about this, but I was a member of the SCP community from way back in 2008 to about 2012 when it was just the wiki and an IRC, and frequently interacted with Bright in the IRC, especially in the roleplay channels. I can absolutely confirm that Bright was an enormous creep. He was casually vulgar all the time and solicited female members for nudes, and I clearly remember several instances of highly disgusting behavior toward myself or others.

Im actually creating a female version of Dr. Bright in my own Discord Server, she doesn't have a medalion, she actually uses a ring that grants her immortality that prevents her from getting any type of damage.

Finding out about this horrifies me because I was around 14 when I got into the SCP Foundation, I didn't make an account back then (for some reason) but I could've easily had this happen to me as I like the character Dr. Bright and would've been happy to talk to the actual Bright. This is the second time I've dodged a bullet regarding someone wanting nudes and/or sending nudes to minors without realizing it (the first time it happened in a different fandom, not the SCP).
