Great to see the jacket arrived! I am so pleased to have discovered the smock as I only knew of the standard goretex jackets existence. As you pointed out, this smock kept me dry in 3 plus hours of torrential rain and gales. Amazing bit of kit, hope you get some good rainy adventures while wearing it! a.t.b. vee

***** Hi, I wouldnt say the cuffs too warm they worked well but it was quite cold up there from the start. The cuffs def stopped the rain getting into my sleeve when I held the camera up to film. On that day I was wearing a merino base layer and a pertex buffalo shirt beneath the jacket. When I was about 3/4 way up , I was pretty warm and if it wasn't blowing 50 plus mph and lashing with rain i would have taken off the pertex layer, but not really an option to do so. I began to get slightly sweaty because of this but it was not a problem as opened up the jacket a tiny bit on way down and kept a good temp. It is a warm jacket for sure as goretex is quite insulating but I think it does the job as winter and ultra wet weather jacket and you don't need many layers under it. hope that helps. Vee

That did look a bit extreme, I'm glad it kept you dry. I've been using british army goretex for years but luckily enough never had that much of a test yet!

I have the petroleum jacket with the matching trousers and I can't find fault with them. Truly the best waterproofs I have ever owned. Having had a few different ones and all have let me down at the critical moment but these one's........ are just perfect! A must for this terrible weather we are getting. Can't recommend enough.

Great video, NATO sizing always does my head in. I have used a French Gortex for years and just got my hands on an Irish Gortex set. And your right it always costs less then civi one.

The French mvp is the best, have both jacket and trousers, new unissued at purchase, should get many years of service with these with proper care.

If the people who made these produced them for the Civvy market in civvy colours they would be market leaders. I have one of these and prior to that I had a Mk1 95 pattern goretex with wired hood. It is still, by far the best ever waterproof jacket I have owned. And I have owned Berghaus, Haglofs, Vans and North Face and none come close to the weatherproofing offered by these jackets.

I did watch the recent video from Wildsoul62 That was a genuine gale that she hiked thru with near Hurricane force winds with driving rain. Ventury effect from being on the side of a mountain during a severe thunder storm. She said that there wasnt any issues with being rain soaked.

Good stuff as always! That first jacket looks like a close equivalent of the US GI Level 6 Gore-Tex jacket. Love mine. Might have to do a video on it soon.

    • @ryaniam22
      @ryaniam22 2 года назад

Yes similar. I have an aor2 level 6 goretex jacket and it is durable as hell but also heavy and more importantly annoyingly loud. That nylon material drives me nuts. I since bought a brushed polyester norrona goretex hunting jacket used and it's is incredibly quiet and nice. Actually took a literal shower for 10 minutes to see if it's waterproof and none got through (except through the neck lol). It's awesome so I wish more outdoor companies would use quieter outer polyester instead of nylon

Cool, the US Army, etc. has what is called the Fuel Handlers Coverall, also Gore-Tex and MultiCam. A REALLY awesome piece of kit. Perfect for foul weather boating, motorcycle riding, and of course outdoors pursuits. I do have to say, your version appears a bit more robust than the one I have.
HAHAHA, I always start writing before the video is over and I just noticed that your version is NOT an overall. In that case brother, you might want to search for the American Gore-Tex fuel handlers coveralls as even another option.

Just bought the petroleum as an upgrade for the lightweight as no hood or pockets on the lightweight. I didn't know their were 2 versions too be honest but glad I picked the petroleum up as definitely better. Size 170/104 grade 1 but looks new £35posted. Have the trousers too and they are very well designed with complete leg zips for easy on/off. I'm a big fan of british army surplus stuff too be honest. The bivvy bag is made of exactly the same material as these jackets as well and thats a good piece of kit too although must admit now weathers turned been using the dutch army bivvy instead.

I like the petroleum one. If you was to buy a civvy equivalent it would be at least £250 . Good kit and price. I have the lightweight one good for in field as it fits in your webbing. May have to save up for one. Atb Paul.

As usual very good review, thank you for that. Something I have always had a problem with is finding trousers that are not "light weight". In my mind (and in a perfect world :) ) trousers that are all/every season are most desireable. I say this as if you need to leave in a hurry you cannot always pack in advance, if it be winter or summer.

Good jackets, I like the storm cuffs rather than the Velcro fastener. looking at my kit compared to this you would think I got the gear from 30's.
I agree on the prices some people pay for the 'fashion' goretex, silly prices better off with this gear, when you rip the guts out the side on a barb-wire fence the shock isnt as bad!...Thanks for the video Darren.

Hello Great review just purchased the Petroleum Smock today from my local surplus store in Grade 1 for GBP 45, just a couple of questions if anybody can advise
Seeing that is to be worn by personnel handling fuel do these smocks have any special extra coatings etc to avoid any potential issues like say static electricity I see they are made from 100% Nylon rather than a mix of fabrics perhaps to avoid that problem ? Also no pockets at the lower part of the jacket just wondering why ? again is that a safety concern. On You Tube the standard Infantry version seems to have 4 large pockets on the front Take care out there

Very cool jackets. It is only sensible if the British Military issue the petroleum jackets to troops! Here in Australia, there is a store that sells amazing products for the Australian Military, they are recognised by the army but everything they have should be issued! Love your videos mate! Also, when are we gonna see another overnighter out bush? Thanks in advance (it is a pain replying on mobile)

Great vid funky. I think the cuffs on petrolium one are a good idea, i think they used to do something similar with the old dpm smocks and an old pair of socks. I have a S95 goretex jacket which is still workin ok but its something to think about for the future:-)

Based on your own experience, if I’m 184 cm tall with 95cm chest measurement against skin, would the 190/104 be best if I want a bit of room for winter layers underneath? I’d expect the 190/96 to be too tight? I’m even considering the 190/112 as I’m considering to wear it over the British windproof smock/jacket (even though their designed to be worn under it) although it might be too loose?
I would be buying online so I can’t try it on first
The thing with the windproof jacket is that it’s reputed to be very water resistant, and since I plan on always carrying a mil-spec poncho which can be rain wear anyway then that would only leave the sleeves of the windproof smock which will get wet when they come out of the poncho, and the water resistance of the smock is said to reduce with washing, but it’s breathability would increase (I assume) while water proof spray could be applied just to the sleeves which would give close to goretex level water resistance to rain which would be the only part getting wet when wearing a poncho? So I’m wondering if the windproof smock and poncho would be a better combo for the purposes of civilian bushcraft/survival use?
The other option is I choose the size based on the possibility of switching between smock and goretex jacket from outer to inner as needed, for instance if your bashing through the bush you might want the goretex inside the smock, but if your hiking on a trail the goretex might be better as a shell just when it’s raining without putting up with a completely non-breathable saggy poncho? In which case should both be 190/104 or maybe one larger than the other? 🤔

So as a hunter who wears a goretex when it's cold -10 to -25 Celsius, only get a goretex jacket if you plan to wear in all the time on your treck. Gortex sucks in anything 5 Celsius and above you sweat too much. Goretex works better in cold weather because the humidity outside is so low. Added benefit is it blocks all the wind making thin wool and fleece MUCH warmer than if under a cotton jacket. This allows you to still be non bulky when it's cold out and not wear a down jacket and look like the Michelin man (down jackets just get torn up in 10 minutes in the bush so they are novelty items. No militaries issues down jackets because they are too fragile to use off the civilized open trail). Poncho are way better anytime above 5 Celsius in my opinion. Wear a good cotton smock and stay comfy the 99% of the time it's not raining and accept your arms might get a little wet those 5 days a year it rains hard. Most of the time you can take shelter for the seriously hard rain anyways. Even in war soldiers get under tarps. Goretex is so impractical despite advertising the opposite. It really is only good for cold winter weather when you can wear it 100% of the time and not kill yourself your sweating

Never ever buy any goretex products second hand unless you are willing to throw them away immediately when they arrive. I've bought two second hand "grade 1" bivy bags and both of them were rubbish. Seams ripped off and full of small holes that I could only notice when hiking and it was raining. Especially with the army surplus as the price difference between new and used might only be 50 euros or less. Also pay close attention to the water repellency treatment. Even the membrane and the seams would be tip top, treating a big bivy bag might be expensive. I had to buy four bottles to get the water repellency back on my hooped bag. So, 50 euros, right there. Same with jackets and trousers.
