A lot of these seniors living in assistive living are on fixed incomes. Either SSI, or SSDI with SSI. And unless they have a family member that advocates for them, and helps to make sure their expenses are paid through their fixed income or other sources, residents are forced to make these centers by way of the property or center manager, their Representative Payee. This means that their income is sent to the manager who takes their cut for the room and board, often only leaving the resident with maybe $100/no to live off of to pay for their other expenses. These centers don't always feed them, and they don't always offer amenities like cable or local phone calls. Usually it's just electricity, water and trash are included in the rent. And they don't usually have nurses available in the daytime either to check on them. Just an on-site property manager that rules with an iron fist.

It sounds like you live there. In which case, my condolences. 🙏 Question, at this assistive living center, is it policy for management to force residents to make them (either the center or property manager), their Representative Payee through SSA? Because when I worked in SMI case management in AZ, that was pretty typical for assistive living centers to do if the resident had a Medicaid title in their state as Seriously Mentally Ill and did not have family in state willing to advocate for them. Then after the manager takes their Lion's Share, the resident is often left with just $100-$200 to live on for the month. That's very stressful and it doesn't treat the person in a dignified way. So if that was his situation, plus she was sending "maintenance" into his apartment without notice, among other unkind treatment, I can understand why he lost it.
