2 or 3 years later, Pikachu and Sonic would rise from the ashes of cinema and show that not all of Hollywood is out of touch when it comes to video games. The two films have potential on undoing this video game movie curse.
What's kind of ironic is that the Mortal Kombat movie actually influenced the games, mainly Kano being Australian as he was originally Japanese-American. Great review though!!!
The only exception to that is the two movies based from the video games: Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog. Those two were financially successful in the box office and liked my the fans because the writers and directors respected the genras and interpreted it their way possible.
well, at least the live-action Mortal Kombat movie was basically the only one that didn't suck and was very faithful to the video games despite it being PG-13.
What studios need to know is that a story in a videogame works for a game. The developers design the story arc over several hours. They need to write a new story from scratch that is related to the game or in the world of the game. And for goodness sakes, if it is a kids game or kind of kid related, make it animated.
It is interesting because a lot of games have novels and comics related to the source material and some are very good, so one would think is basically the same, exactly what you said maling a story set in the same universe but right for the different media. Is weird how they can do that with films.
The Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney film from a few years back was pretty good. Kinda spooky (even though the game is mostly brightly colored and funny) but had great costume design and an interesting idea on how to present evidence in court like the games.
10 points on the badass-a-tude meter Erod! Personally, I want video game movies to be good as well. The Ratchet and Clank movie is one of my guilty pleasures. I respect your opinion on the matter and hope for better in the future. Nice job on the high score by the way.
i don't know if someone could be agree or disagree with this opinion, but mortal kombat was the only good movie based in a videogame, even to be a pg-13 rated, it was good
If you enjoy the movie, that's all that matters in the end. Personally, I like the Ratchet and Clank movie as a guilty pleasure since I have been playing the games for so long.
Eh, there's over 10 actually good ones, but the caveat to that is every one that's legitimately good without requiring you go into the film with knowledge of the source material (Like, say, was warcraft's issue) is they originate from Japan, some of them never being imported or part of franchises many aren't familiar with. .Hack, Persona, Ace Attorney, Fate/Stay Night, the tales games, Bayonetta, Zone of the Enders, Corpse party...There's a list of decent films based on those. Western Video game movies? Comparatively Almost all of them have been dead on arrival. And the Mortal Kombat movie? I don't think it's outright bad either and there's stuff to enjoy there as the fight scenes are pretty well choreographed, so it's probably one of the better western ones. And Personally I find the Street fighter movie hilarious in the 'so bad it's good' way, though the street fighter anime movie was a far better adaptation.
I remember him telling me that he'll only review an uwe boll movie if stupidly does so by accident and that He'll need the emergency martial arts powers of Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Jet Li.
my thing about video game movies is almost the same with adapting from books. there is alot of material to sort through. some may have it easier than others but alot needs to be either axed or changed. i think it could possibly work given a good director and screen writers but that may be a bit hard to come by with them also knowing the ip they are working with and how long the movies tend to be.
I though Erod actually likes the first amazing spider man but oh well. After he really dosen't like the second one, i think he grews to like the ASM films less and less and for a reason.
I can understand why people didn't like TASM, the series ultimately failed for a reason. But after Sony and Marvel Studios teamed up, Spidey is finally with MCU and everyone involved has moved on to better things, you would think people would drop it, but no- no, people still have write and talk about how bad TASM was. I sound petty now.
This was a fun review. I'm not a gamer and I'm not very familiar with most of the movies being talked about, but I understand the point being made here. Sounds like a frustrating genre. I enjoyed this episode a lot.
Really liked this episode. The joke with the bomb really worked for me. I agree. I don't play much in VG, and those I do don't get movies (Skyrim, Lego Marvel, Mirror's Edge). But still, it would suck to know a movie based on my favorite game stinks. It happened to TV series that I liked, so I can see the main idea. Eventually when a video-game based movie will do the change and will be considered good both by critics and general audience, only then others will follow and do the same. Until then, enjoy your assassin's creed and Ratchet and Clank.
1:55 Bowser is more of a turtle-dragon, Erod. Also, I believe Tomb Raider (2018), Rampage, Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) and Mortal Kombat (2021) would like to have a word with you today.
I liked the Mortal Kombat movie. Chris Lambert was awesome as Raiden. Because of Trevor Goddard they retconed Kano. The Johnny Cage/Scorpion fight was awesome. 09:58 We were all waiting for it.
As an Assassin's Creed fan, I'm going to be honest and say I loved the movie. The visuals looked amazing and many references to the game I managed to spot. But the main problem? It was short. It needed another 30 minutes to expand on the plot and characters to be perfect.
About Ubisoft: Last year there were so many video game movies that it was going to be a turning point. Blizzard, Ubisoft and Insomnia were involved with the production of the movies. Then the movies started to flop. I'm willing to bet that Ubisoft's claim that the movies are commercials for the games was done as preemptive damage control.
Seconding Mike Duncan. If you're already familiar with the lore, it's ok. But as an initiated? I spent half of the time asking myself "WHY are these people doing these very dumb things and why is no one wary of the sorcerer who is so OBVIOUSLY a baddie?" It fails as a movie in that you need to know the material beforehand. Considering that you make a movie to widen your audience base, they kind of screwed the pooch on that by making it a fan-only movie.
So Erod, have you ever seen the "Double Dragon" animated series that came out in the 90's? If you have what did you think about it? If you haven't I guarantee you that its on RUclips. Personally I really liked it, it stuck with me for many years. Had an awesome theme and great characters. Billy and especially Jimmy are badass who wield magic swords need I say more?
I think the ratchet and clank movie reboot viewed on its own was good. The only reason that it was heavily criticised was because they lifted most of the scenes right out of the game that was made in relation to it. A sad fact that the company didnt think to either hold off the game release date or not work on both at the same time. But as a movie, since I havent had the chance to play the game yet, It really isn't bad. It has the basic premise and improves the original story where it lacked. I am a BIG ratchet and clank fan so I knew what to expect from the movie. It was servicable and my expectations werent high, so i was able to enjoy it more.
The point are valid, but I kinda disagree with "the pot doesn't resemble one in the game" objection. Sometimes it is actually PREFERABLE, since I often don't want a faithful adaptation of videogame plot, I want a movie based on a videogame. Things that work for the videogame medium won't work for the movie. I think that Resident Evil movie (first one) wasn't THAT bad. It had all the crucial elements of the series (zombie outbreak, t-virus, Umbrella corp etc) but tried to tell it's own story in that setting, rather that just re-telling the story from the game.
On the other hand if the plot we get is nothing like anything that would be in the game or match that franchise's world it's not a fair adaptation either. It doesn't have to be a close adaptation like a book but it has to at least feel like it fits in with the game's established story.
The theory probably doesn't add to Nintendo, because Nintendo was interested on an earlier script of the Super Mario Bros movie, but because of a sudden change during production, both on people and script, the actors didn't like it, and neither Nintendo; So nintendo decided to plan on making their own animation studio, not letting america use their properties. Which is why just anime based on the video games were made, because Nintendo of Japan is able to supervise it. At least, that's what I understand what happened, the Mario movie being the last nail in the coffin.
I feel like Japan has a better grasp on adapting video games into movies than the US. Ever see the Ace Attorney live action film that came out in Japan? It's fantastic and amazingly faithful.
Mario is currently getting a animated remake and sonic is getting his movie in 2018 as if they got fans of the characters and people who made the games onto these movies, than they would be most likely good compared to films that didn't have any involvement from their makers like resident evil films for example.
Hey Rod, what are your feelings of Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist and Warcraft, films which were genuine efforts to be as faithful and compelling as the source material?
I always thought the rail shooter _Carn-Evil_ and _Bionic Commando_ could easily be made into movies. The former has dopey teenagers have to survive a voodoo zombie amusement park while the latter is _The Expendables_ but with cyborgs fighting Nazis. *HOW IS THIS SO HARD??*
Victor Riquelme yeah but I wanna see it again and him busting it as The BlockBuster Buster while mocking and pointing out the flaws is way more interesting, cooler and definitely wanna see more with ERod giving more knowledge about Disney Channel and sitcoms than just leaving it busted besides there might be people who want to see Hannah Montana busted a second time do you wanna see it busted a second time as well.
And he already busted Hannah Montana: The Movie which btw is a movie of the show I liked along with others like Even Stevens and Wizards Of Waverly Place.
Hey Erod, can you please review Jaws 3D & Jaws the Revenge? 47 Meters is coming out, so this may be a good time to bust those two! Don't forget to mention that JAWS 3D was made because of Universal being petty about the movie Great White!
I really like this format of talking of a subject rather than busting a movie. the old way of busting a movie with clips was better in my opinion. also, How come the dvds behind you are so VERY French?
So if you're a _Half-Life_ fan and wondering why any of the games haven't been made into movies (Be it the Black Mesa Incident from the first and Gearbox expansions or Gordon's adventure in the cyberpunk dystopian future of City 17 in the second or the comedic spin off _Portal_), NOW YOU KNOW! And Knowing is half the battle. *_UWE BOOOOOOOOLLLLLLL!!!!!_*
Erod, I was hoping you gave the Warcraft movie a review at some point, since I find it doesnt fall on the usual faults of other videogames movies, yet still is not liked by many people (not me though)
This is one thing that pisses me off with Hollywood. They can't get game to movies or animated shows to movies right, even with all the money at their disposal. Yet fans do a hell of a better job, even if lacking the thousands or millions of dollars. What the hell Hollywood? Get your shit together and start doing these movies right!
While Prince of Persia and Warcraft are my favourite video game adaptations, I also must be one of the very few who liked Assassins Creed. No Joke! as flawed as that movie is, at least it respects it's source material than trying to adapt it from the 'very first' game, which by the way wasn't perfect itself.
ERod, loved your old show. Love your new show... however the audio on all your new stuff sucks... pretty badly... Hope to hear you better in the near future.
the curse is kind of broken thanks to Ratchet and Clank for theatrical films, but in the animation department , video game adaptions tend to excel much better as it sticks to their animation. the Resident Evil CGI films are a good example of this, and the ratchet and clank movie was a good reboot for a almost 10 year old seires. Sonic boom was a shit game, but had a pretty good 100 episode cartoon seires. Megaman has some mixed results, and now we got Castlevaina hitting the scene and flexing some seirous muscle.
So studios make bad videogame movies so people will go back to playing the video games they liked in the first place... It's like these video game movies were produced by Black Willy Wonka!
2 or 3 years later, Pikachu and Sonic would rise from the ashes of cinema and show that not all of Hollywood is out of touch when it comes to video games. The two films have potential on undoing this video game movie curse.
You gotta love how Erod butted in on Laura Croft's moment and she just rolls her eyes, like she's met him before.
And then detective pikachu and sonic the hedgehog came out. Who wouldve guessed those would be the ones to break the curse.
And now years later, Sonic The Hedgehog movies are amazing.

They need to write a new story from scratch that is related to the game or in the world of the game. And for goodness sakes, if it is a kids game or kind of kid related, make it animated.
Daniel Lado shut up
Problem was that they focused too much on the Modern day stuff- should've just stayed in the past.
Star fox and nights anyone?
It is interesting because a lot of games have novels and comics related to the source material and some are very good, so one would think is basically the same, exactly what you said maling a story set in the same universe but right for the different media. Is weird how they can do that with films.
Anyone else think that Prince of Persia was decent?
PoP was decent, and Warcraft wasn't all bad either. :)
PoP was terrible, Warcraft was great!
Those are my two favourite video game adaptations.
wow, going against a bad movie is one thing but to go after an entire movie genre, that takes serious fanboy guts
Gio A Emphasis on Fanboy
Roll call Legion of Notifications from Badass-itude. MegaMr46!
Using the old NES controller while playing MEGAS XLR theme is funny and awesome as hell!
I agree with erod the curse of the bad live action videogame movies will not end .
Awesome review! Can't wait for the next episode.
The Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney film from a few years back was pretty good. Kinda spooky (even though the game is mostly brightly colored and funny) but had great costume design and an interesting idea on how to present evidence in court like the games.

That Super Mario OVA was great!
blaa6 Although it is only in japanese, it feels like the game with the way it was animated. But it gets weird and not in the mario weird.
True, but it's the best we've got.
i don't know if someone could be agree or disagree with this opinion, but mortal kombat was the only good movie based in a videogame, even to be a pg-13 rated, it was good
Victor Riquelme I agree. The first MK is so cheesy but so much fun to watch. Then sequel came.
If you enjoy the movie, that's all that matters in the end. Personally, I like the Ratchet and Clank movie as a guilty pleasure since I have been playing the games for so long.
Phelous made a pretty convincing case for it in his review.
I didn't like the Mortal Kombat movie since it did not feel like the game. The story in the newer installments are more movie quality in every way.

And Personally I find the Street fighter movie hilarious in the 'so bad it's good' way, though the street fighter anime movie was a far better adaptation.
Well, at least we have the Professor Layton movie.
Question: All of these bad video game movies and not one mention about ANY of Uwe Boll and his abominations?
It's best we forget about those
I remember him telling me that he'll only review an uwe boll movie if stupidly does so by accident and that He'll need the emergency martial arts powers of Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Jet Li.
Nelson Demifur I don't think his products qualify as movies.
Triple C Productions neither does Birdemic. But that gotta sequel
He did! House of the Dead!
9:58 ah there it is, thanks Erod. ^^
Well, the Castlevania anime Netflix series looks promising enough.
imdb88 Unless the dialogue is about as hokey as SotN
Ben Wasserman But that's what made it so enjoyable.
my thing about video game movies is almost the same with adapting from books. there is alot of material to sort through. some may have it easier than others but alot needs to be either axed or changed. i think it could possibly work given a good director and screen writers but that may be a bit hard to come by with them also knowing the ip they are working with and how long the movies tend to be.
Maybe the Tomb Raider reboot staring Alicia Vikander, will be better than the Angelina Jolie ones.
Mabye but do a reboot on Doom as make it like hardcore Henry and base it on the recent title in the franchise.
This was a fun one. Can't wait to your next video after TASM video.
I though Erod actually likes the first amazing spider man but oh well. After he really dosen't like the second one, i think he grews to like the ASM films less and less and for a reason.

Katherine Alvarez hopefully homecoming is more successful since it's marvel studios being part of the film and his civil war appearance has praise.
God I hope so. I've been waiting for this.
Both Detective Pikachu and Sonic would like a word with you, E-Rod.
His question in the end has been answered.
detective pikachu was great
This was a fun review. I'm not a gamer and I'm not very familiar with most of the movies being talked about, but I understand the point being made here. Sounds like a frustrating genre. I enjoyed this episode a lot.

E-rod, I love you buddy, but the new mini-skits are extremely distracting. I prefer the format of your Honest Reviews.
The Pokémon movies are as close as we're gonna get
Well, some the straight to DVD movies are OK.
Where's Luigi in the beginning of the video? Probably out with daisy.
That girl who played tomb raider was hot. You should employ her in more of your projects.
Loved the Captain N reference in the opening!!
I find it kinda funny to see Erod ragging on the Super Mario Bros movie, since he once stated it was a guilty pleasure of his
Still not a good movie despite him liking it.
This came out 4 years ago.
I liked the Mortal Kombat movie. Chris Lambert was awesome as Raiden. Because of Trevor Goddard they retconed Kano. The Johnny Cage/Scorpion fight was awesome.
09:58 We were all waiting for it.
Nice Video Erod
As an Assassin's Creed fan, I'm going to be honest and say I loved the movie. The visuals looked amazing and many references to the game I managed to spot. But the main problem? It was short. It needed another 30 minutes to expand on the plot and characters to be perfect.
That woman getting hit on the head with a CGI rock was better acting than both Tomb Raider films.
About Ubisoft:

Then the movies started to flop. I'm willing to bet that Ubisoft's claim that the movies are commercials for the games was done as preemptive damage control.
I'm late on my Easter Egg hunt for the Super Mario Bros. Movie.
but he makes a good point.
Sonic the Hedgehog: laughs
Very funny, I love the references. As much as I know the Mario bros movie was crap it's still one of my guilty pleasure. XD
I wouldn't call this a review as much as an overly elaborate editorial.
cough cough Warcraft was okay. cough.
It was okay if you were familiar with the Warcraft story. Otherwise you were pretty lost and bored.
Seconding Mike Duncan. If you're already familiar with the lore, it's ok. But as an initiated? I spent half of the time asking myself "WHY are these people doing these very dumb things and why is no one wary of the sorcerer who is so OBVIOUSLY a baddie?"
It fails as a movie in that you need to know the material beforehand. Considering that you make a movie to widen your audience base, they kind of screwed the pooch on that by making it a fan-only movie.
Only three things are certain in life; death, taxes, and video game movies sucking.
So Erod, have you ever seen the "Double Dragon" animated series that came out in the 90's? If you have what did you think about it? If you haven't I guarantee you that its on RUclips. Hey Erod, are you ever gonna review the Warcraft of Assassins creed movie?
I'd like to see him utilize Thor's hammer and his own simultaneously
I think I'd pay to watch ERod's versions of all these films in full.
This topic should be a spoof movie, as long as Seltzer and Friedberg stay well away from this idea!
Silent Hill by french director Christophe Gans was excellent, one of the few good video game adaptation movie.
At least we have the Sonic OVA
oh come on there are good video game movies out there!
How could you not have M. Bison turn his head, and say 'OF COURSE'?!
Ha. You didn't stay 'til after the credits, did you?
I must've left before that. Sorry.
I feel like Japan has a better grasp on adapting video games into movies than the US. Ever see the Ace Attorney live action film that came out in Japan? It's fantastic and amazingly faithful.
Imma say theres 1 good video game movie but just 1 ready player one if you say no then your nastolgia critic in dusguise

The Blockbuster Buster can you bust Lizzie McGuire The Movie, Hannah Montana The Movie and The Suite Life Movie.
he bust hanna montana year's ago
Victor Riquelme yeah but I wanna see it again and him busting it as The BlockBuster Buster while mocking and pointing out the flaws is way more interesting, cooler and definitely wanna see more with ERod giving more knowledge about Disney Channel and sitcoms than just leaving it busted besides there might be people who want to see Hannah Montana busted a second time do you wanna see it busted a second time as well.
Jack Whitty plus the suite life movie doesn't count as its made for tv so not a blockbuster to his definition
As long as he doesn't bust Wizards Of Waverly Place: The Movie.
And he already busted Hannah Montana: The Movie which btw is a movie of the show I liked along with others like Even Stevens and Wizards Of Waverly Place.
So this is one of the main reasons why they hate ERod. And I can see that.
Hey Erod, can you please review Jaws 3D & Jaws the Revenge? 47 Meters is coming out, so this may be a good time to bust those two! Don't forget to mention that JAWS 3D was made because of Universal being petty about the movie Great White!
Prince of Persia was okay, Mortal Kombat was decent, and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider is a guilty pleasure
I'd say the Tomb Raider movie is probably the worst one mainly because of how boring it is. All the others were bad, but they weren't boring.
I really like this format of talking of a subject rather than busting a movie. the old way of busting a movie with clips was better in my opinion.
also, How come the dvds behind you are so VERY French?
Kind of a stretch on the whole."blockbuster" aspect of blockbuster buster
So if you're a _Half-Life_ fan and wondering why any of the games haven't been made into movies (Be it the Black Mesa Incident from the first and Gearbox expansions or Gordon's adventure in the cyberpunk dystopian future of City 17 in the second or the comedic spin off _Portal_), NOW YOU KNOW! And Knowing is half the battle.
*_UWE BOOOOOOOOLLLLLLL!!!!!_*
One video game movie I thought was actually pretty good was Warcraft.
ponchomkr
Warcraft was a good film.
The Angry Birds Movie was also a good adaptation of its game.
Erod, I was hoping you gave the Warcraft movie a review at some point, since I find it doesnt fall on the usual faults of other videogames movies, yet still is not liked by many people (not me though)

What the hell Hollywood? Get your shit together and start doing these movies right!
oh...my. Hello Lara
Theres always pokemon, animal crossing, detective pikachu and sonic
great opening line!
Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children was actually legitimately GOOD.
You think if some of these guys pulled a Marvel when it came to making video game movies we would finally get a good one?
ERod, loved your old show. Love your new show... however the audio on all your new stuff sucks... pretty badly... Hope to hear you better in the near future.
Never thought of it that way.
At least the Warcraft movie was enjoyable. Thing is, it's much harder to follow if you're not already a bit of a lore nerd.
the curse is kind of broken thanks to Ratchet and Clank for theatrical films, but in the animation department , video game adaptions tend to excel much better as it sticks to their animation. the Resident Evil CGI films are a good example of this, and the ratchet and clank movie was a good reboot for a almost 10 year old seires. Erod watch Press Start. It is one of the best video game movie I ever seen.
I legitimately loved the Super Mario Bros. movie
Ooh, you forget to make fun of Uwe Boll movies :D
The less we think about them, the better :)
In The 90s there was gonna be duke nukem movie.
captain N the game master
Hey, why doesn't someone make THAT movie? "The Game-Over Man".
The best video game movie is TRON hands down
So studios make bad videogame movies so people will go back to playing the video games they liked in the first place... It's like these video game movies were produced by Black Willy Wonka!
At least Pokémon: Detective Pikachu was good!
Dare i say, already the best movie based off a game!
IF the game has a decent plot, just rip it off instead, it's like the writers needs to make it so darn complicated.
I really cannot understand why they haven't made a Fire Emblem movie! Path of Radiance, and Radiant Dawn are a great place to start.
Because Nintendo doesn't need another series go fall under the Mario Bros. curse
Hollywood needs to involve the people behind the games so the movies don't suck as there making a movie based on the Minecraft by the way.
You forgot uwe Boll
i will admit, i wanted to like Assassins Creed. I went in ignoring the critics and i still ended up hating it.
There is one good video game movie which is Phoenix Wright. To bad it never left Japan.
Video game cartoons, in the other hand...
