Ran out and bought this CD when it came out and i had a $500 car with a $2,000 stereo. All of my neighbors knew this song all too well whether they wanted to or not.
This album "Too Long In Exile" came out here in the US in 1993... So 30 years later this track still rocks so good.
My favorite cover of *"Gloria"* was from *The Doors.* Jim Morrison vocal style really work great with their cover.
North Dakota/Minnesota have the same seasons you do Alex. 90s in summer then quickly down into the 50s for fall, then nonsense cold.
I love me some V-A-N the M-A-N tunes. One of the first artists I started collecting all of the vinyl for. Some of us are born to be grumpy old men, myself included.
Van probably would have had more in common with John Lee Hooker than most of his contemporaries. He apparently did not feel that he made the same music as most pop/rock acts of the 60s or 70s, which is true. And John Lee Hooker put his own personal stamp on everything as well. Wonderful version of the song that is going on a playlist somewhere. Great pick by Chris!
Van and John Lee bring out the best in each other. Love the songs from the BBC special.
Love Van Morrison….he’s done some amazing songs. ❤️ Having said that, this version of Gloria by John Lee Hooker is pretty bloody good!
An absolutely classic song! Thank you Chris, Alex, and George!
Sure is. So good
Looooooved this... and my lord, the size of that guitar! I'd love to see you guys review Cream's I feel free on German telly (which is floating about) and Stevie Wright's Black Eyed Bruiser with the live performance. Love the reviews of these iconinc classic songs! Great stuff.
Van does a great take on Gloria at the Hollywood Bowl concert in 2008. In fact, this whole gig was top drawer, well worth a look.... Basically, it was mostly the stuff from Astral Weeks.
There's also a brilliant 14 minute Gloria on the live A Night in San Francisco album.... absolutely epic.
fyi, the drummer playing with John Lee was Dave Earley, brilliant percussionist who played with Van extensively, died in 1996 in a car accident at the age of 40. There's a live video on utube of Summertime in England [bit like this one- poor quality video but good sound] where Earley smashes it and, as is usual with Van, the rest of the band is top flight, including the amazing Richie Buckley on sax and Georgie Fame on keyboards.
Always loved Van the Man, got a few of his albums on Vinyl. And the with John Lee Hooker, just magic.
I was lucky enough to catch a couple of the old Blues and soul guys while they were still with us. My fav, Muddy Waters. Also caught Chuck Berry and James Brown.
Ohhh Im a huge blues fan... You're lucky and smart
Great song one of the most covered songs when I was young. Amazing ability to produce of this quality of a rock song.
Hearing them together I must admit I preferred the second one. Found the maturity level of both artist that gave that version more warmth and texture that hadn’t been established at 18. A great song to give a listen was VanMorrison and the band doing comfotabley numb in Berlin doing the wall
And then I listened to the rest of the show... far out the 1989 version! STUNNING!
When I was at KSAN I went to his record release party for Wavelength. He was a grumpy git then, as well. I think it may be a permanent condition. 💯 agree with George Re: Patti Smith’s version and that you should cover her-in fact, a Patti Smith week would be AMAZING! As for the John Lee Hooker/Van Morrison version: better than the original! WOW! Thanks, Chris!
Van the man🇦🇺🎸⚡️🤘🏼🤘🏿💋❤️
I loved your bonus track and now I’m looking forward to listening to Patty Smith’s version, which is still my favourite. Alex, I agree. Your green screen is really beautiful, because we cannot see it. It works perfectly.
HA HA :)
Oh wow, Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg. That is older than old. Think she was from '45-46, remember she died in somewhere in 2019. And if I'm not mistaken Serge Gainsbourg was born in the late 20's (1920's 😂).
Je word ouder papa, geef het maar toe! 🎉
The second version is far superior! It’s cleaner. It swings. John Lee Hooker singing “you’re a sinner” as a response at the end is phenomenal.
I agree
Van Morrison is THE MAN
I love the blues!
Well ... Chris, that was a fantastic pairing of tracks that showcased Van the Man's writing and performance skills (and JL Hooker wasn't shabby either).
Alex and George, I agree that the Hooker/Morrison version sounded cleaned up, but hey, show me a live video that has no post-production magic on it, and I will bow down at the feet of a very rare beast. However, I think you are right, I reckon it was a live studio playthrough, edited over the live performance video. Which is perfectly fine too. I am all for presenting a song in its best light.
I have my own Van Morrison story, I can't remember if it was 1989 or 1990, but I was in Ireland at the Rose of Tralee festival and Van Morrison was playing a small venue (a school hall I think) and I was walking past, and you could hear Van playing really clearly. So, along with several hundred others, I pulled up a bit of grass outside the hall and settled in to listen. A short time later, the windows and the front doors were opened, and the sound flooded out more clearly. Murmurs went around the crowd outside about how generous Morrison was to open the doors so that those gathered outside could hear his show better. This was widely appreciated. The following morning, it was reported in the local news that Morrison's concert was almost stopped because the crowd was overheating; however, in a last-ditch attempt to dissipate the heat in the venue, they opened the doors and windows, which allowed the show to be completed. And we thought Van was being nice, hahah.
One last thing before I go, Patti Smith does some amazing covers. Some people say that the only good things to come out of Chicago are the roads leading out of the city. Harsh, but I reckon you could add Patti Smith to that. Thank your chosen God that she found her way to New York and one of the finest poets/songwriters/singers ...artists, to come out of America. I have heard her cover 'Gloria', but for the Aussies that have made it this far in my stupidly long comment, take a look at her cover of Midnight Oil's Beds are Burning. Even if you don't have time for the whole song, treat yourself to the monologue at the beginning. Link below.

Hi Len - Great read as ever!! Cheers Alex
In most cases it is hard to beat the original song but for me the version with the late great John Lee is far superior. Them had some big hits and my all time favourite for you to add to your huge list to check out is "Here Comes The Night" with a young Mick jagger on backing vocals.
Ty Guys always love your trips into the world of great music

Cool
If you want another John Lee Hooker collaboration you need to explore his work in 1971 with Canned Heat, "Hooker 'N Heat". Just listen to "Whiskey and Wimmen", "Just You and Me", "Let's Make It", "Peavine", and "Boogie Chillen No. 2".
Looking up now - Cheers Alex
WOW
@@TheThamesmen You will have fun with anything off that album, this 74 year old guarantees that much.
Also, since you are exploring Van Morrison roots with "Them" try what was my first introduction to him back in the 1960s, Them and "Here Comes The Night".
@@leonardoglesby1730 its on repeat
Undismayed audience there. I've heard the chords are the house of the rising sun backwards though couldn't swear to it.
Jim Morrison does a pretty good cover too!
3 chords and a yard of smoke
How unbelievably cool is John Lee’s voice.
He can’t spell Gloria for shit, but I’ll cut him some slack because of that vocal delivery.
I noticed the spelling too!
@@TheThamesmen
I blame the education system
That said it is John Lee Hooker so it is probably us who is getting it wrong all along.
@@TheThamesmen
He does have a thirst for knowledge. I’ve heard him asking How? How? How? How? in songs before.
Who are these Goodies on my telly??
We are :)
@@TheThamesmen - Not you two 🤡. Talking about The Goodies that's coming up after the BBC *"Sent me the clowns".*
What the original show? Classic part of our childhood!
I met Van backstage in 1988 and he was still grumpy! What did you guys do to him? 😱
We met him in early 90s so same question. Right back at you!😃
Great great great - I don't know how many times I've listened to the second version 💜 Would be really nice to see you react to Van and John in I cover the waterfront ruclips.net/video/pUkBGERTcdQ/видео.html
No Laura Branigan?
Van has done some great songs but yep I reckon he must be a grumpy person. Saw him in concert in the 1970's in Australia. At the time it was a requirement that visiting artists had to have an Australian artist as their support act. He was not happy about that so he didn't acknowledge or talk to the audience the whole concert. His vibe was I don't want to be here. His band were great however.
Amazing you can be grumpy for so
Many years!
that second one was awsome. when are you guys going to visit the flight of the conchords. they leave you smiling for days.
Aussie band - THE PARTY BOYS did an awesome version of this song at one point , you guys should try to check it
