Great video! I have been using my F6 in 32-bit float mode and still have some clipping displayed in Audacity. I was just wondering how to repair the audio file in post-production when using the 32-bit float mode?

Some programs can’t process 32 bit. Usually it’s just as easy as lowering the level so that the peaks are brought to normal.
Thanks for checking out the video!

Awesome vid... have you ever tested the Zoom F8? I just picked it up and tested the limiter and compresser using the built-in mic capsules, and when turned up the gain and did a "puh puh puh" it immediately peaked and when it peaked it clicks in the recording and cut off the audio. ?? Was using the default limiter settings.. obviously don't want that to happen!

I haven't had the chance to use the F8. I really want to though. Most of my recordings are done with 32 bit float which allows more flexibility during editing. I am hesitant to use built in limiters cause that will be baked in to the recording. Of course they are very useful when you don't have 32 bit float. I actually just got the F3 so now i can test that out too. Maybe Zoom will send me one if they recognize me lol Thanks for checking out the video, it means a lot!

Great video Rebel! Finally some one did a review and test of the limiters.
And yes Limiters on 32 bit recorder is still in good use, i send my output directly to the camera so in this case a Limiter is very much welcome TBH. Do run and gun , field, outdoor, sports and fishing tournaments. Some of these events can go from extremely quiet ambiance to very loud action packed scenes.
Also you missed the 2nd Limiter maybe you can add that to a future limiter episode?
Go to the Output Menu, Line Out, there is Level ... Routing ... Limiter ... Delay
The output limiter is strictly for Line output level to avoid line out going over 0 DBFS and avoid clipping the input of your recording device i.e. Camera Audio Input.
There is only the Normal Mode (No Advanced option) but there are all the settings available to adjust to your liking. Maybe you could give this a test as well?
It seems if you use both limiter options we could endup getting some serious artifacts i guess depedning on their threshold levels?
Let say we set the Input Limiter for -9 DBFS. We can set the Output Limiter for -6 DBFS so any peaks that do seem to get past the Input Stage can now be tamed before sending too hot of a signal to the camera or just to completely control peaks.

I have a video planned around the line out but I don’t use it much. I have to talk to some of my friends that use that to get a better insight on how it’s used so I can do some tests. Hopefully I’ll have it out soon.
Thanks for checking out the video!

@@RebelTech1990 Yeah the Line Out gets kinda confusing.
I guess in 32 bit Float Only Recording is where the Output Menu Line Out Limiter will be of good use.
Great thing is too with Routing you can monitor the line out and hear how the limiter sounds real time and adjust if needed without permanent clipping.
Sweet would be looking forward to that as well. I know so far i need to use a -35 dB Attenuator into the camera. And I've started using the output limiter just to be sure it does not over shoot the Camera Input while recording.

I did a video on the output monitoring and it’s amazing how many options you have. I found it very helpful with multiple lavs on a short film I worked on.

The output limiter seems to only function in 24-bit mode, in 32-bit it does nothing and the audio still clips on the line-out. Unless you have found a way to make it work?

Limiter output is capped at 24bit. The tracks are the only ones with 32 bit recording

If you don't need all the channels of the F6, do you think the F3 will be a good option? I don't like the idea of having to go into the menu to change gain if I decided to do 24 bit. I don't have any experience with 32 bit but I heard someone remark that it added editing challenges. If Float 32 bit doesn't work out for me, I would like the option to be able to adjust gains easily without going into a menu system. I realize that the Bluetooth App. might make that problem much easier to deal with.
    Thoughts?

If you use 24 bit in any way, you have to go into the pfl settings to adjust the “trim” aka gain. When you are in just 32 bit, the fader knobs act as gain knobs as well. The adjustment of gain is very simple, you just click the check mark to get to the pfl, then press it till you get to the track you are looking to adjust. Then just change the gain. It isn’t as easy as a handy recorder but I never had an issue with adjusting my gain. Even with 24 bit.
With 32 bit float files, I’ve never had. An issue with them. If your cpu is half way decent and you are using a program that is “semi pro” you should be fine.
The F3 looks like you have to go into the menu as well, to adjust the gain. There is also an app to adjust it as well.
If you don’t wanna use 32 bit, the save the money and get a handy recorder. They are becoming much cheaper with these having 32 bit. That being said, you can save yourself a lot of time and effort with 32 bit float.
That’s basically how I feel about this file formats and the Zoom recorders. Let me know if there’s any other topic you want me to talk about.
Thanks for checking out the video!

@@RebelTech1990 I have asked a couple people and the answers are a bit confusing. I would like to be able to lower or increase volume that gets stored in the file via knobs. I have heard that in 32 bit float the knobs only adjust loudness going out; in other words if you were sending it directly into a camera. I want to synch afterwards and would prefer to have settings that are close as opposed to doing a ton of recovery via gain adjustments in post.

When I’m 32 bit, only, the knobs adjust everything. The trim is not available. The signal out of the line out is only 24 bit. There isn’t a 32 bit signal going out in any mode. When you use anything other than 32 bit, on its own, you will have to adjust the gain by adjusting the trim in the pfl settings
