  • It may sound like a simple objective, but it's been a 40 year journey for cash cropper Larry Dyck, who operates Campden Grain with his son Ben, near Campden on Ontario's Niagara peninsula.
On this episode of Real Agriculture's Soil School, Dyck shares how he planted into a green cover crop of legumes, hairy vetch, crimson clover, and turnips. The cover crop was then burned down directly after planting to make way for the emerging corn.

I commend him on his efforts! He’s a pioneer, and hopefully, American producers need, and will follow him!

Love the candidness, humility and transparency. Interesting approach on Engineering vs Agronomics and committing to perfect everything in your control before giving up. I too have learned some expensive lessons here in Missouri and will say one has to be “all in” to do what you are doing. We’ll done.

The problem is not always with soil practice, with the variation in spring weather can humble any decisions made from April to June. Last year any fall tillage was a detriment. The previous year we seeded directly into stubble. Both methods were the wrong choice till about August 31, then God gave us a crop when we didn't expect despite very little rain.
