"Magic is a world of visualization". You cannot manifest what you can't visualize. In the manga, Serie is said to be a warmonger that thrives in a chaotic world that's why she can't beat the Demon King because she cannot visualize herself living in a peaceful era.
Well... That is in a way a lack of imagination and probably having lines she's not willing to cross. After all, the Demon King being gone doesn't have to mean a peaceful era. For example, she technically could visualize herself killing the Demon King and then replacing him as the one who creates the chaos in his stead.

They probably plan to keep it even after they leave. So Denken who needs it made them fight for it so they can say they fought hard to protect it. So if anything, it's about showing respect.
Honestly, I got mad respect for Denken. My favorite this arc probably. When he went for that fist fight, my respect for him went through the roof it could probably break serie's barrier.

Yes besides even if they trade it for money, it means he died so that someone else can buy his ticket to the next stage, and as denken said it lacks logic since both teams would lose and the dead of their teammate would have been for nothing not even money
I do feel like at 8:10, it's important to note that Denken IS experienced, and aware that Frieren outclasses his mana pool by many times over. And he knows that since defensive magic consumes so much mana, that forcing her to use a large bubble of it over a long period was the only way for him to for sure beat her. As Frieren told Fern way back, a bubble of defensive magic can drain your whole mana pool in seconds. So Denken did a massive AOE fire tornado, for I believe at least a whole minute in the manga, to force her to use defensive magic for as long as he could. It must be said that the fire tornado of that size, for a whole minute and with such intensity, caused a bit of worry for even the first class mage examiners at first that it could harm the barrier. SO Denken must have a large mana pool as well for his age and experience. Just is near impossible for anyone to beat her anymore if she's aware, since she can just hold the full bubble of defense for longer than anyone can hit her with offensive magic. Gotta give props to Denken so far, for sure one of my favorite side characters this arc so far
Near impossible but theoretically she can lose bc defensive magic can be defeated explained by Richter. That's where physical mass magic comes in. Since zoltrak is ineffective against defense spell physical magic could destroy it. Even Frieren says she can't imagine beating a mage who can manipulate water in the rain. Love this magic system it's not the mana that counts it's the match up and use of abilities and the user's skill.

Why would the dudes who lost a teammate refuse to hand over the Stille, even if they already lost? It's simple, and Denken knew, it's BECAUSE they lost a teammate. Think of it this way: Your teammate sacrificed his/her life to capture and protect the Stille. Don't you think that just giving it to another team would be the same thing as spitting at your teammate's grave? It is an emotional thing, you would choose to fight until the end, even if you already lost, just to give some meaning to your teammate's death, just to try to at least say at the end "Dude, we protected it too, for you".
if Serie actually wanted to defeat demon king she probably tried to beat him soon as she learn about his existence. But she didn’t since she’s one of those characters that does not care about the good and evil or world’s changing as long as the world stays being intriguing to her even if that world is having endless conflict with demons.

I feel sad for the lack of quality in some of the subtitles. I'm pretty sure Denken said something like "What a surprise! Despite I've gotten so high in this world, there are still heights above me to be climbed", instead we got the lame "I'm surprised! Even at my level there is still someone above me." (It just reminds me of a Vegeta saying It's over 9000). Even though both phrases are identical in content, the tone is way different, the first one would sound respectful and filled with admiration, while the second one just sounds as an arrogant teenager talking (which does not fit Denken's character of old wise man). Poetry is sometimes needed, imo, and it shouldn't be cut for translation-sake.

Well as a Manga reader for anyone that is a fan of Denken I can tell you that there’s a whole Arc that involves him so look forward to that. Granted this Arc more than likely won’t happen this season but maybe when season 2 comes out then maybe. (If you want to know that Arc now then read the manga and I heavily recommend people should as it’s such a great read)
Frieren season 1 will end exactly with chapter 60 since we only have 7 more episodes and around 2 chapter are adapted with each episode. Season 2 will most likely take a while considering there are only 123 manga chapter atm.
There is enough material for a season two with both the El Dorado arc and The monument of the Goddess one. If we are lucky maybe we can get it in like 2 years? It depends if it is already in production or not. I can't wait though!

Frieren manga releases sometimes every week a new chapter, sometimes it takes 2 to 4 for a new one and once the author even took a break for several weeks.
It think that what Frieren meant when she said that she would lose with a water mage in the rain, is that going along with it and fighting in the rain it would be a losing proposition. But in an actual fight my guess is that Frieren would use one of her giant F You AOE spells and blow a hole in the cloud cover. No rain no problem. She's just built that different. The barrier breaking spell was epic level proof. Loved the fight with Denken and it makes sense that what he wanted for, the magician license, was to get something you could not get easy with justmoney and power: going back home inside a war zone. Also loved that even though Frieren beat him like a red headed stepchild, he didn't gave up and cooked an alternate plan on the spot: look for a decimated team and fight for the bird with old fashioned fisticuffs. Not only shows him to be a determinator, but also that he doesn't consider himself above the need of getting dirty to get things done.
Denken is such a great character man, I remember reading this arc in manga and immediately liking his personality. I'm not going to spoil much, but in the second season, If it ever comes out, we're going to have a great arc dedicated to him.
It's ironic that Frieren had to take the 1st class mage exam just because she doesn't bother to call herself a Great Mage. It's like a doctorate trying to gain a bachelor's degree because her certificate is outdated haha.
Frieren just like a student who got free answer of her test from someone but instead receive it, she calmly refuse and said, "there's no joy of answering the questions without researchs." I felt that Frieren. i felt that tho.

There were 57 Candidates for the Exam, who were paired as a 3-member team for a total of 19 teams. Out of which 6 teams, aka., 18 Candidates qualified. Meaning 39 Candidates (or 13 teams), got disqualified, either because of Team Wipeout, Member(s) Death, or Unable to catch the Target.
No.. the reason why Frerien broke the barrier so that kanne the water mage could access water becoz kanne can't generate water unlike her best friend Lawine that can create ice spears. Kanne can only control water that's why Frerien planned to destroy the barrier so that kanne is free to collect all waters outside the barrier and defeat that earth mage.
to explain what Flamme said, while the Demon King's magic isn't really known, and we may never know, its implied to be something that battle hungry types categorically can't overcome for the reasons Flamme said. it may be impossible to oppose the Demon King if you can't conceive of a future beyond him.

the reason why the guy who handled the 1st Exam (Genau) Looked down on Frieren is because, if you remembered, before the exam started, they looked at her mana and judged her solely on mana alone instead of looking her name and title. That's why I love Sense, she kept telling Genau that Frieren is something else but Genau so arrogant he diidnt even bother to rethink, lol little did he Serie is Frieren's Master's Master. He only started asking questions about her when Frieren finally dispelled the barrier that Serie made.

There’s the chance that after besting such a powerful opponent, they might want another challenge, but it could drive them insane to be in constant search for another opponent of such a high level. Maybe a couple of years ago, I remember at least one anime, possibly a manga too, that explores the aftermath of a hero who was able to defeat the demon lord, and how he took it, and by the end, it didn’t exactly have a fairy tale ending. When it comes to Frieren, who isn’t doing all of this for power, accolades, or even revenge, defeating the demon lord just means going into a peaceful retirement, as we see. All she wants is knowledge, but she likes to learn on her own time.

Kanne can only control water that's why Frerien planned to destroy the barrier so that kanne is free to collect all waters outside the barrier and defeat that earth mage.

the reason why the guy who handled the 1st Exam (Genau) Looked down on Frieren is because, if you remembered, before the exam started, they looked at her mana and judged her solely on mana alone instead of looking her name and title. That's why I love Sense, she kept telling Genau that Frieren is something else but Genau so arrogant he diidnt even bother to rethink, lol little did he Serie is Frieren's Master's Master. He only started asking questions about her when Frieren finally dispelled the barrier that Serie made.

The way I took Frieren’s master’s words was something like, after defeating it, what would they look forward to next. There’s the chance that after besting such a powerful opponent, they might want another challenge, but it could drive them insane to be in constant search for another opponent of such a high level. Maybe a couple of years ago, I remember at least one anime, possibly a manga too, that explores the aftermath of a hero who was able to defeat the demon lord, and how he took it, and by the end, it didn’t exactly have a fairy tale ending.
When it comes to Frieren, who isn’t doing all of this for power, accolades, or even revenge, defeating the demon lord just means going into a peaceful retirement, as we see. All she wants is knowledge, but she likes to learn on her own time.
Oh dont worry about Denken, you'll see in the future
Denken visiting the grave will be the biggest arc of frieren though. He's definitely a top tier side character.

Caught up with the manga and damn...reading Denken's backstory...i cried...it might me corny or cringe saying i cried but experiencing loosing someone like my grandfather and cousin when i was at a young age hits diffirent...reading the manga with great dialogue is so wonderful and sad at the same time...

It must suck big time to not only know that it’s hopeless to pass the exam, but to cling to your pride, get your ass beat, and your pockets run to further cement that were incapable of even the smallest of wins. For someone like that, I’d hope that they had it in them to pick themselves back up, lick their wounds, and try again next time, but my darker thoughts are prevailing on this one.

As much as I like Frieren (or maybe I should say "want to like it"?) I just can't defend this ginormous contradiction: ever since ep. 1 we've been seeing Frieren collect spells, receiving parchments as rewards, or books, or stealing them from dragon nests or chests; and now she's saying "nuh-uh, I don't want to simply receive a spell, I'm not interested in that it's pointless. The whole point of magic is discovering it". WHAT?!!
