A very average looking title for an open-world sandbox game released at the back end of 2018, more so on PC where you expect to be able to crank up the visuals way beyond the limited consoles. It seems to me that the primary focus was adding the weather effects (this instalments only real new selling feature) and tweaking performance so the game runs better on consoles (which they have definitely achieved from the Digital Foundry video I watched on the PS4 and Xbox One versions) but unfortunately they've had to pretty much compromise everything else to achieve it. The game looks noticeably worse than the three year old Just Cause 3 and arguably has inferior looking water and effects to 2010's Just Cause 2. Textures are wildly variable in quality, anti-aliasing is poor and pop in is horrendously bad just when running around nevermind while flying (which is really how you spend a significant amount of your time in this game). It can occasionally look OK, even nice, but most of the time it is borderline ugly. Of course, graphics aren't everything but even the gameplay is dull once you've had fun playing around with the grappling hook and blown a few things up. There's no variety to the gameplay, the story is lacklustre and the missions feel pretty much the same. Even the huge open world is dull because it doesn't feel remotely like a real place, not helped by extremely poor A.I. and floaty vehicle handling. The game plays and looks dated IMO.
What version of the game is this Tim? ? thats kinda important as they are patching it to optimise it after release all of this might be out of date by now.
This game started me off with less than 1080p and I was like WTF?! 🤦♂️ PC Master Race, huh? 🤣 With everything he recommended it got me upto 100fps at 1080p on my GTX1070 Founders Edition. But, 1080 is for weirdo's because it still looked like crap. Thankfully, at 1440p it's doing an average of 70fps and looks soooo much better than it did. I don't know how you 1080 guys do it. I can't wait to see the difference next weekend when my Gigabyte 2070 Super shows up finally. I'm getting into the game now that it actually looks better with descent fps.
I disagree, these tests are really useful. For example one allowed me to get Assassins Creed Odyssey to 4K 50fps on an RTX 2080 just by turning down two settings that you barely notice. You can't expect the developer to tweak for every single hardware configuration and user preference. They (usually) try to make the game look its best on the given GPU, ignoring other factors. So these comparisons are ALWAYS useful.
@@alexatkin what I mean is that we should not have to lower settings to play a poorly optimised game, when other games with similar visuals get way better performance. This is like crysis but without the visuals. If the game was properly done in the first place there would be no reason for you to change any settings, and there would be no reason for this video. And as I said I certainly appreciate the video, as I will probably play this game and use the content of this video. I dunno what you mean about tweaking for hardware preference, it seems it doesn't matter what you have it runs badly compared to every other game.
The SSAO implementation in JC4 is just horrible IMO. Just adds a thick dark layer on almost the whole screen (so you need +30% gamma to compensate) and not really giving much more depth by realistic and well used ambient occlusion shadows. I don't get why not just use HBAO+ and HDAO (first for Nvidia and second for AMD users) which are both the best in terms of perf/visual quality ratio.
LOD Factor only affects CPU performance. Which, when testing on an overclocked 8700K is less likely to impact your performance. Seriously, taking the CPU out of the equation seems like a bad choice.
Edge fade does a bit more than vignette, i had white particles showing through Rico's head at the start of the game and enabling this setting fixes it. One of the wierd settings we don't really know what it does...
@Hardware Unboxed great video thank you. I just got this game and was not impressed with the graphics themselves. To me the game looks a bit washed out and lacks any kind of depth. The water looks very bad for a 2018 game and what makes it worse is the fact a very old game like farcry 2 or Crysis have way better water detail to them and this game just game out in 2018. I also had to laugh at the hair quality it looks like a shimmering mess or maybe it is just how AMD cards render the hair. I may try some of your settings to see if I can fix that this evening. Performance wise my old 390x over clocked seemed to handle the game just fine but I had to run it in full screen mode the borderless mode seemed to cause slight stuttering when you would do fast turns. The game itself seems like they were trying to be some what like Saints Row but without the humor aspect. Some of the game play just reminded me of cartoon like Saints Row games. To me this game went way off track on how the past Just cause games were done. It is still fun to play but it really felt more like a bit arcade type game and lost some of the good things that made Just cause games fairly good. When I found the balloon things for his arm thing I was like omfg that is the stupidest thing I have ever seen why is this here. My stepson seemed to like it since he spent at least 2 hours attaching ballons to everything to make them float including people and dogs, deer, goats etc etc. SO I guess that is why that feature is there and that would be to appeal to the kids most likely most adults will find it a bit messed up. Would I tell a friend to buy this game probably not or at least until they make things some what better with patches. I will go back to playing FarCry 5 it just seems like a much more complete game that plays and runs great and looks far far far better graphics wise and if I am going to shell out 79.99-139.99CAD for a game I expect the whole package to be 100% complete and work properly.
Wait, you're running this on a 2080Ti and you manage to drop below 60fps? I'm running it on a 2070 maxed out settings in 4K and mine hasn't dropped below 60 once?
I have a 1080ti and 32 gig ram. I have max settings on. I run it at 2560x1440. My FPS reader says that it stays at 144 non stop. But when I'm moving really fast or if there is alot of stuff being blown it will stutter for just a sec. my FPS counter wouldn't change from 144 at all. Any solutions for this??
A couple of weeks ago you could get this game for free on Epic store. I already thought it was weird that i got less fps compared to other (similar) games, now i understand. Thanks hardware unboxed for these types of videos, they're really helpful!
Hi, any possibility of doing AMD vs Nvidia performance impact? I think it's essential to know how optimized and if on one card disabling something does not hurt as much on the other.
Excellent production as always. The only setting that wasn't tested was resolution. I know most would not compromise on playing less than 1080p, but purely from a performance standpoint, it would be good to know if lowering the resolution would have any performance gains either. If it doesn't, then we are definitely looking at a terribly optimized game (worse than it already is). Thanks for all the hard work!
Game developers seem to be pushing their games out to release before they're actually finished a lot these days… It's such a shame, back in my day videogames were released on cartridges and they were only very few with game breaking glitches. These days I guess they figure anything broken can be easily patched down the road, but that just seems lazy on their part if that's the case
It seems they aren't doing a lot of play testing, just push it out to the public and let them find the issues instead. With even Microsoft going this route, what a generation to live in huh.
This video lost credibility when I saw the resolution used for test. If you can play at 3840 x 2160 your system clearly doesn't need that much optimisation.
I’m getting decent framerates but the issue I have with JC4 is the sudden slowdowns to < 10 FPS here and there. I’ll have to look into what’s causing that. I’m liking the game enough but graphics are definitely a let down.
Hey look a quality PC game reviewer. Nice. Add to cart.. i mean subscribe! Been looking for more of you guys ever since we lost TB. Even though this has no focus on gameplay, i really appreciate the performance aspect and side by side comparisons. Thank you sir!

The engine and optimization or lack thereof is a deal breaker for me. I can easily run this game at 100+ FPS with everything maxed out but when I play Just Cause 4, I want to play just cause 3 because it’s light Years better.

The game plays and looks dated IMO.
my Just Cause 4 is crashing on loading...every time!!! and i am completly hopeles...i don't know what to do with it, I just want to play the game!!!!
Same Here
@@faridainur3488 It is a problem with the server, disable the internet (or block it for the game) and play it on offline mode.
What version of the game is this Tim? ? thats kinda important as they are patching it to optimise it after release all of this might be out of date by now.
Just got this game free, and came here after discovering how poorly it runs. Seems not much to be done without big hits to quality.
This game started me off with less than 1080p and I was like WTF?! 🤦♂️
PC Master Race, huh? 🤣
With everything he recommended it got me upto 100fps at 1080p on my GTX1070 Founders Edition.
But, 1080 is for weirdo's because it still looked like crap.
Thankfully, at 1440p it's doing an average of 70fps and looks soooo much better than it did.
I don't know how you 1080 guys do it. I can't wait to see the difference next weekend when my
Gigabyte 2070 Super shows up finally. I'm getting into the game now that it actually looks better with descent fps.
I really appreciate the fact that you guys take the time to do this kind of stuff, but the reality is, you shouldn't bloody have too.
I dunno what you mean about tweaking for hardware preference, it seems it doesn't matter what you have it runs badly compared to every other game.
aaaand yep crysis 1 from 2007 looks better
I was looking for a simple tutorial, but you created a real *quality* video to help us choose our own settings. Thank you! 🔥
I have a low end PC 60Hz display, so should I turn on Vertical Syn or keep it off?
The problem is the graphics, it feels like a ps3 game
Who cares about graphics as long as it's fun.
Wouldn't go that far.
But why it should be graphically impressive? What's wrong with just "ok" graphics? This graphical obsession is going too far.
@@AnalogFoundrywhen it looks a lot worse than the previous game, me, and PERSONALLY, both of them seemed boring to me, very repetitive
@@P43YM Most people wouldn't mind the graphics if the game didn't run like utter garbage
How do you show the FPS in the top left
the biggest problem is the shadow and texture pop ins
Really glad I didn't pre-order this game...
Edge fade does a bit more than vignette, i had white particles showing through Rico's head at the start of the game and enabling this setting fixes it. One of the wierd settings we don't really know what it does...
can you help me there are like some black dots with lights in the game and
How would this perform with a Radeon Rx 570?
On consolles???
Seems like an insult to that poor ostrich if I'm honest! Even attempting to run with no legs, you can't take away the fact that at least he's trying.
Wait, you're running this on a 2080Ti and you manage to drop below 60fps? I'm running it on a 2070 maxed out settings in 4K and mine hasn't dropped below 60 once?
You must have turned down something i guess cuz i have a 2070 super and get around 50 fps on 4k
Disable Temporal SMAA and Motion Blur
I have gtx 1660 ti, what resolution should I use?
I have an 10700k and a 1060s and my computer had the cpu overheat. Wtf i was literally in the cutscene for when you get the bridge town thing
Something weird with this game is that if you are on windows and just press the windows button the game pauses and your cpu can cool
I think it's essential to know how optimized and if on one card disabling something does not hurt as much on the other.
whenever i turn my camera my frames die
Same
Excellent production as always.
With the AF quality, it is almost always recommended to push it through NVCP or Nvidia Inspector.
Does this work on low end pc?
Whats the result all in one
In the graphics menu, you can just hit escape and it will prompt you if you want to change settings, wtf are you talking about ?!
They added this in last patch.
This video lost credibility when I saw the resolution used for test. If you can play at 3840 x 2160 your system clearly doesn't need that much optimisation.
As stated in the video that was just for the capture footage as YT compresses it.
fps boost from 24fps to 60, THANK YOU YOU ARE MMY SAVIOR, I WILL PRAISE YOU FOR LIFE
Wont amd cards give you worse results with water tesselation on? Or is that history now?
I’m getting decent framerates but the issue I have with JC4 is the sudden slowdowns to < 10 FPS here and there. I’ll have to look into what’s causing that. I’m liking the game enough but graphics are definitely a let down.
Great upload! This video was super-entertaining!
Hey look a quality PC game reviewer. Nice. Add to cart.. i mean subscribe! Been looking for more of you guys ever since we lost TB. Even though this has no focus on gameplay, i really appreciate the performance aspect and side by side comparisons. Thank you sir!
Geez. I get that it's a new engine, but still. Now am worried for Rage 2...
these guide are some of the best videos going, i know the huge amount of time involved, and have no intention on playing the game, i just get interested in the improvements, please see this up.
The engine and optimization or lack thereof is a deal breaker for me. I can easily run this game at 100+ FPS with everything maxed out but when I play Just Cause 4, I want to play just cause 3 because it’s light Years better.
I still don't understand how they managed to make another just cause game with the joke 3 was, not even playable.
JC3 works fine now.
After few years :-)
@ItzLevvie They didn't patch that out?
removed denuvo or what?
Turning off bokeh depth of field also seems to turn off the heat light distortion.
When your doing the comparisons do you mind if you put a little FPS counter in the top or bottom of each side so we can se in FPS what the difference is, anyways awesome video 👍
