- Ustad Atta Fareed reported to me that his favorite NFAK qawwali was the bhajjan turned qawwali, "Sanson Ki Mala". Here he does a bit of it. His reverance for the memory and the work of his dear friend and teacher, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, as well as the corrosive effects of the passage of time on his own abilities made this performance particularly touching. The poignancy of it nearly left me in tears. Let us continue to honor and celebrate such giants of Southeast Asia.

Zeshan, it was remarkable how consistently Atta Fareed sahib praised his mentor and friend NFAK and even his nephew, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. There were moments where his nostalgia and yearning for an era that has come to pass was very palpable. While we all have such nostalgia and pang for times past but we do so privately with rare witnesses. In the case of Atta Fareed sahib, so many witnessed the magic of that era of NFAK. We saw the ways that these original crew members dazzled the world with the improvisational and transcendental power of qawwali. Many of us imagined the energy and innovation that must have been at the center of NFAK's version of qawwali. How does one come down from the high of being a party to that creative engine?!
