BIg Al is a musical genus. He studied the styles of early jazz from 1920's to the 1950's, with his emphasis on common practice big band swing era from 1934 to 1947, Benny goodman, glenn miller, artie shaw tommy dorsey. and the fantastic arrangers jerry grey, spud murphy, johnny warrington and fletcher henderson. His band is like no other, a return to a simpler time. I knew Big Al in college, at North Texas State and was lead alto and curved soprano sax soloist, 1982-1986.
What a great sound! Before reading the comments, I was trying to guess what year and thought late 30s maybe ‘39. I knew Gresik in the “Big Al” days at North Texas and was grateful to be his friend. Being bad at correspondence, I lost touch with him after a while, but am psyched to see what he’s done with his band!!!
