There's another interesting airship concept that hasn't been tried, and that's steam airships. Steam, as a lifting gas is more than twice as buoyant as heated air, and better than any other gas other than helium and hydrogen. With the right design, a steam airship would require less fuel to stay aloft than a strictly hot air ship.
Isn't it funny that water is made from hydrogen and oxygen? A steam balloon is half way to a hydrogen balloon already
Not only do you have to carry lots of water on board your airship, now you have to turn it into steam too heavy too costly

Because of the so-called "helium shortage", the next best (formerly THE best) lifting gas to use would be hydrogen. However, people are still nervous about the thought of riding or being near a "balloon-fish-bomb thing". Remember the Hindenburg? While it is true that she met an untimely and violent end, the company that made her, Luftschiffbau Zeppelin, had a relatively clean record (save for the atrocities committed by airship-bombers in the First World War and the Hindenburg herself). In my opinion, the decline and disfavour in the use of hydrogen airships is due more to stigma than it is to safety concerns. If there was a way or if there were multiple ways of making hydrogen airships relatively safe for travel again, I would like to ride one. And this may sound crazy, but I also aspire to someday fly one or own and manage a fleet of cargo and passenger airships. There are many places that would benefit from airships. Take Linapacan in Palawan, in the Philippines as an example. That place is so isolated and underdeveloped, I dubbed it "the town that progress forgot". It is reachable only by sea, and the nearest airport is in the next town, which is around two to four hours away by boat. But alas, much research and experimentation are needed to make relatively safe hydrogen airships a potential possibility.
Thermal airships--whether people like them or not--are relatively "green" (that is, with the right types of fuel). Actually, extracting helium would probably cause more damage to the environment than it is to manufacture or extract natural or carbon-neutral gases. Thermal airships could also be used for short-haul flights.
And, by the way, it is "versus" with a "u", instead of "verses" with an "e". "Versus" means "against" or "compared to"; whereas, "verses" can be defined as the lines in a poem.
And, by the way, carbon dioxide (CO2) does not burn, and is used in certain types of fire extinguishers. It also cannot provide lift because it is heavier than air. The lift for thermal airships can be produced by methane, propane, hexane, or some other flammable gas. Also, some gases burn cleaner than others.

How about heated helium? What about a bunch of little plastic magnifying glasses covering insulated balloon fabric that keeps the helium hot?
Then your helium would begin to fuse into carbon bad idea 👎 unless you want to fall out the sky
Also helium, doesn't provide an extra lifting force when heated.
