I have this plugin now for halve a year and I can say I use it (I mean that's the meaning-full threshold) in really every production. Why? It's all about the quantize and repeat options! These are so incredible clever and sophisticated. It's so easy to give some swing and repeat to a HiHat, there are so many nifty and subtle ways to manipulate swing / rush / drag it makes it the ultimate groove machine. That is what makes it for me stand out to the rest. Groove and quantization, this is the best, so many sensible options, there is even an option: bad quantize. Wow man that says it all. If you want insane control over your HH and tripels, this is awesome. I do not write these comment often, but this plugin is good... You won't regret.
XO is 100% my favorite new plugin. Got it on sale a few weeks ago and it's a godsend. I can't recommend this plugin enough. For anyone thinking about getting it, stop debating. JUST GET IT.
Didnt see these replies! My bad! Short answer is yes. However music production has unfortunately taken a bit of a backseat recently due to life circumstances, but it makes going through my ridiculously overwhelming sample library infinitely easier!
bro yesterday I was wishing to see a tutorial on XO because I just bought it and as usual Jon Sine listening to my heart's voice. I love you Jon Sine. You are an inspiration.
This ends up being such a huge time saver for anyone with a big drum library. An incredible deal on Black Friday, a workflow improvement that will last and last.
My only issue with the sample browser is that compared to a normal browser I feel like I’m potentially missing the “perfect” sample because I’m not going down a list listening to everything if that makes sense. Though the XO visual browser is more fun and interesting and you can do some crazy shit routing xo to an audio channel and recording dragging your mouse through it for crazy glitches and chaotic loops. They also give you a normal file browser so at the end of the day it’s not much of an issue and probably more a weird sense of FOMO. XO is amazing.
This is an insane plugin never did I think i would be so happy to find something. Literally the issue we all deal with is too many damn samples, this helps w/ that
The thing about XO is it’s lacking basic functions like drag and drop so it force you to use the AI pool. Say I know a kick I want, and I want to drag and drop it in instead of having xo scan folders of sounds. Then waiting to have it load if those folders are massive.. Etc. I have to add it to the sample library then search for it. It’s just really stupid all around in how it makes you select samples. Dragging and dropping from the AI pool of samples. But you can’t simply drag and drop from your pc/Mac file window. And not being able to double click or drop sample on to the pad, but an arrow to the pad. It’s a really bad design in that regard.
@@Tnevels Well, that's because it is not designed to do that. When scanning samples, a lot of metadata is recorded in the process. The workflow is built around remaining inside the program and thus this processing helps you identify and utilize close sounding samples. It would've been better if it had that feature of dragging and dropping in, I agree, but I don't think the tool was developed to be a traditional sequencer so I don't blame them.
Hey Jon, the feature you are looking for is under the edit page, called "Beat Combiner" .... not really random patterns, but there are a lot of predefined patterns that you can mix and match manually, or use the randomise function to auto pick a random pattern out of the available ones.

If Steve recommended it that's all I needed to hear.
I've been using XO for a couple of months now and I love it. Everything Jon showed off here is great but he barely scratched the surface. The exporting options are incredible. it also has 8 outputs so you could route each channel to its own track in your DAW. his first wishlist item of generating patterns is already in there. and there is more to the "sound swapping" feature than what he showed. Highly recommend. Great video!
13:50 - Answer to your question/wish: There is actually this functionality already available. At the left side there is a Lock Icon, under this lock icon there is a circle, this circle is called "Hot Swap Sample Browser" click on it and select samples while playing.
I have made a promise to myself that the only plugins I buy going forward will be for genuine quality of life improvements. I don’t need another compressor, I already have like 2 dozen, I don’t need EQs, etc - none of that, it’s actually annoying going through my plugin library because I spent way too much money on stupid stuff. This though - this is a total game changer! My least favorite thin is trying to come up with new kits because it’s so time consuming and annoying that by the time I have something figured out I’ve ran out of creative energy. This plugin looks like it keeps the creative juices flowing while at the same time actually honing in on that “perfect” kit for a given song. I love it!
One cable to the soundcart. soundcard has output to speaker and outboardgear. Or The speakers are connected to some outboard stuff so basicylly everything is routed together
There are some incredible things about this plugin, switching samples in context is gold. got it three months ago but haven't been able to really lock it in my workflow. looking forward to some updates. It kinda confuses me tbh some big RUclipsrs rate it highly and I'm just like why can't we be friends.
Jon, that feature you are looking for is there. Just click a small colored circle on the left while the beat is playing. You can then browse around the cloud on the right to preview different sounds for that circle while the beat is playing. Then click the green check mark above the circle to confirm you want to replace the sound.
Thanks for the review. Grabbed it earlier today and now am having trouble doing anything I need to do. It will make drum programming a little more fun from now on. Keep the vids coming... I find them useful, and find your voice extremely relaxing:)
Usually gear doesn't really make me more productive, but XO superscharged my creative process. Sample selection took always sooooo long and was so boring/frustrating. It reliably kicked me out of the creative mood. Now it's fun! Especially when I start with the drums. The only thing is I kinda forgot about Black Friday and already bought it at full price a few weeks ago. But hey. Still wort it :D.
What you did not mention is the super handy preset-browser which can play along with your arrangement while stepping through different sounds AND beats. Very helpful to get inspired and getting things running quickly. But very nice review anyway!
I've been using XO for 1 year and it's indeed great. It's not the first though to bring that map concept. First was Atlas. Nevertheless, it's still great and one of the best. I have it by default on my DAW all the time.
For me, XO beats most other drum plugins if you don't require precise synth control. It has replaced my hardware drum machine since I have all the samples ready to go anyway. In fact, XO plus a midi controller provides you with literally thousands of drum machines and millions of combinations! I also like the 8 track limit, keeps things sane... ;-)
I have been using something very similar to this plugin for the last 2 years which is called "Atlas" by company Algonaut. It almost works identical except it doesn't have the inbuilt step sequencer. Thanks for sharing this Jon, I will certainly check it out and see if helps my workflow
Hey Jon great video! Logic now has several ways to make amazing drum beats. One way is with the new step sequencer. The other two drum plugins that come with logic are drum synth and drum machine designer. The other really cool plug-in that I recommend to breathe new life into drums and creating new sonic possibilities for drum beats is portal by output.
Hey man great video as always, but I was wondering if you could maybe help/make a tutorial about something I’ve been struggling with... how do I deal with a crippling depression, lack of motivation when it comes to anything, and feelings of everything going down hill and to shit in life? Thanks in advanced I appreciate it!
Using an unsupervised learning algorithm is fairly standard. I am waiting for an algorithm that creates novel variations based on the provided samples and one that tries to recreate samples based on existing songs.
I just added your Elements samples to XO, works like magic, although I can't see guitar loops and serum presets there, so it's a bit of a mess, but thank you! I endorse Jon Sine's Elements packs, good stuff!
Check out Algonaut Atlas, same concept with the step sequencer coming soon. You can have up to 64 channels though and you can modify the samples, you press New Kit, and it randomly select samples from your collection, respecting what was loaded on each pad previously, so the Kick pad will have a new kick loaded on it and so on. You can have multiple "maps" as they're called, your collection of samples. So if you wanted to create Deep House loops, you can select the folder containing samples most suitable for Deep House, if it's Psy-Trance, same thing.
Playing around with XO. But it freaking me out that there isn't possible to make multiple sequences within XO, only edit the midi after you have exported it in to midi in Logic... Am I just stupid or isn't it possible-? Other than this, I love XO so far... :)
Really dig your explanation but my question is the following. You are making EDM beats that are pretty straight beats. does that step seq enable you to place drums of beat? Or delayed hits, you know what I mean. in HIpHop its not always straight on 2 & 4…
Lol I just bought this. When I heard about it, it was on sale too, now seeing you make a video about how good it is, I feel like it was a good decision, unlike some others haha
I love Geist especially the round robin feature but there’s not enough tutorial videos on it. I wish someone would include a timing push and pull feature. Listening back to my older tracks where my drum machines chasing code on tape would fluctuate very subtly. They never sounded rigid. XO is great and easy to shift notes off the grid. Still, I wish it had a “push/pull” feature. And XO would be improved with a round robin feature.

Agree. That would fundamentally change browsing your sounds!
In Omnisphere you can browse "similar sounds"

One thing we gotta give Jon is his dedication/motivation for building things. The studio looking dope with the LED lights.
thank you :) finally

If you consider XO, you should really demo Atlas by Algonaut. I personally prefer Atlas over XO.
Same here. XO's step sequencer is just a little bit lacking
did you update logic? Logic has copied Ableton's 'sampler' and 'simpler' it works great that along with the stepsequenser is so good
10.6 or 10.5?

I'm just now discovering this plugin!! It's great for sample-use workflow!! Hope you/yours are doing well, Jon. 🙂💛
Is it possible to extend the Sequencer Pattern? Like to 32 or 64 for variations?
And can you ad more sounds than the limited 8 engines?
amazing. Also, I hope they implement your suggestions
