Been building WordPress sites for a while and never did I once think to use a plugin to automate CPT creation. My goodness bud you've saved me so much time with CPT UI!
I am building a website site for publishing highly sourced explainers (articles, videos, and dynamic infographics) that will require a ton of citations. The killer feature of this site will be a customizable reference library so people can easily cite their sources while composing content, find old sources they previously cites, and share citations amongst each other. If you think about how many data points - and how many relationships they can all have (journals, books, news articles, authors, scientific papers, etc.) then you can see how quickly this can get incredibly complicated. But I *have* to make it present as simply las possible for my users! I'm going to use custom post types and fields to build all this out on the backend and then learn how to customize frontend/backend interfaces. So thank you for helping me get started on my journey. I hope I can find more videos from you that will enhance my knowledge of this as I go.

You can do it either way. I usually create a page because it’s easier to manage pages than templates. And it makes more logical sense. A /blog/ page with an articles grid is a page in my mind, not a template. Having to make certain things pages and certain things templates and remember what is what makes sites messier to manage.

POW!!! This episode opened all kinds of thought on how to implement CPTs. I really had not thought of all of the possibilities until watching this post. Subscribing for sure!
This is really helpful and very well presented. I'm an experienced PHP developer with a client that insists on using WordPress, so I have to put aside a lot of what I know and learn many new ways of doing things... The one question I had was in regards to relating custom post types. Would you use Advanced Custom Fields, or is there a more direct method? In this case, it's a support site for Products (custom post type), which fall under a hierarchical structure of Product Categories (taxonomy) and have multiple images (ACF gallery field) as well as supporting Documents (Custom Post Types) with taxonomies for Language, Status, Type, Format, etc. You helped me sort out the initial structure, and relating Produces to Categories is easy, but now I need to relate Supporting Documents to Products in a many-to-many relationship. On top of that, I have to import thousands of records from Salesforce and Oracle to populate this structure, but that's another question.
When you doing a follow up vid mate? :) , as soon as im not poor af ill be doing your courses thats for sure , all your vids here have helped ALOT bro! cheers
Man, I love your videos, thank you so much for sharing! If I want to create a document library, should I use custom post types with ACF or is there another way? Thanks!
Kevin, how about CPT for Custom Authentication Pages? In Bricks it seems not possible, only on pages, but I thought it might be very logical to have them.
Since you asked, here are some ideas for tutorials / courses: - It is way too difficult in the current Oxygen/Wordpress framework to set up this simple flow on a site. I want to show all terms in a taxonomy with images. When you click on that taxonomy, you land on a archive page for the CPT. Then can click on each individual CPT to see the single instance. For example, on a product site baseball gear: First page would show all product types (taxonomies) such as gloves, bats, ball, etc. When you click on the glove category, you get a list of all gloves. You can then click on a single glove to see the details of it. I run into this ALL the time and have to hack it with code snippets and/or some creative templates in Oxygen. It is important that the URL stays consistent and hierarchical. - How to add images to a CPT? Do you use the "Add Media" button. Do you made a Custom Field for the images? I've done both - Relationships (you said you were covering that already) - Deep dive into permalink structure for CPT and taxonomies. If you turn off archive for the CPT can you use that slug for a page? I like my url's to make sense and it can be tricky because the CPT slug and taxonomy slug have to be unique.
Thanks very much for this! Your statement about Products and how we should be using WooCommerce for that use case rather than custom post types was very helpful. I was literally stuck in that dilemma trying to figure out how to implement custom checkout with custom post type: "Product". But I guess the way to go would be to add custom fields to the WooCommerce Product post type that comes with the plugin if we want to customize it further. This, at least for small products that can be sold online. Additionally, the car dealership analogy made sense for custom post type: Product. Thank you sir! I really am learning a lot from you
If you setup a CPT and a corresponding custom taxonomy, what would you use as the "main page" for that CPT? Would you just use a standard "page"? Seems a little clunky, but I'm unsure
@@Gearyco I appreciate the reply, thank you. Quick followup: If I go the CPT archive, is there a way to A) Get the Gutenberg editor, and B) I take it you fill out the input fields with custom fields targeting the "Post type list", right? Thank you again, nobody else seems to know what to do here.

Thank you so much for this, it is really an eye opener to the scope of what can be done. It has certainly given me some new ideas for my next projects. This stuff is invaluable!
Great tutorial. Just would like to hear you opinion on the category/custom post type slug. In your rank math setup video, you said to leave the category slug. Is the reason only to have a hierarchy for users or is there another reason? I would prefer to have custom post type permalink directly in root. Also, I often redesign and relaunch pages for clients and need to keep tu URL structure for SEO as much possible. I know I can set up redirects, but still.
thank u for this post type video... can i expect more deep video regarding the post type and repeater things... also please show some tips for wocommerce sites... thank u again for putting your time and effort sir....
Awesome video, so much clearer now. But still, is there any purpose to use Custom Post Types, ACF for small business sites? Like 1-5 pages and if the clients don't even want to add any info on their own? Looks like a time waste to setup everything, instead of just making the site?
I don't build 1-5 page sites and don't think that 1-5 page sites really serve clients well. If it's 1-5 pages to start and then more to come later, then yes it's important to build the proper site architecture from the beginning. It's actually not much work at all and makes your life easier on the back end in many ways.
Thanks for this - enlightening indeed - I am a crocoblock convertee and a novice coder - you mention repeaters frequently and would this be (in Bricks)a template?
Very helpful video!! It would be great to see more videos on the use of custom post types and ACF with Oxygen! Finally I wanted to say "thanks!!" for your awesome tutorials Kevin!
Wow. Thank you so much. 2021 and finally we're finally getting a proper explanation that makes sense (at least to me). Keep it coming, you're helping many of us. :)
I’m guessing this is the way to go so clients can update the custom field sections rather than muck up a page layout? Great content Kevin and would like deeper dive on this.
Is it possible to use that not only for a client where himself has to put all the CPT manually and upload their image, but "any" user can register on his website and put a car to the website (i.e. with additional fields like color, price etc.) and the client as website owner can control and publish it as CPT? Or is therefore a further Plugin needed? A video about this way of a website would be nice:-)
Awesome video Kevin! Would you advise to store brands for WooCommerce product under a new post type or as a taxonomy under the product post type? I'm still confused about that since I want to have gridbuilder facet filter the brand on an archive page for the product post type.
@@Gearyco I'm building webshop for a music store that is specialised in keyboards, piano's and such. They have like 40 brands. At the moment I choose a taxonomy for the brands under the product post type so I can filter them with gridbuilder. I couldn't find a way to filter the items under a post type.
I'm new to CPTs and trying to figure out which tools I should invest to. Is there a reason you're using both ACF Pro and CPT UI? In which way do they cooperate between them? Or do you use them for different kind of projects, and how do you choose which tool for each project? Thank you in advance for sharing your experience.
@@NassuKesso ACF did not support CPTs until version 6.1, so we used ACF Pro for custom field creation and CPT UI to create custom post types. I've looked at MetaBox, it does both and I also think I prefer the interface. It's more intuitive. And, easy to create custom fields and associate them with only certain CPTs. We purchased an Agency LTD, so we won't have to worry about annual subscriptions either. Hope that helps!
I am advanced with custom post types and this video was still extremely helpful. You are really good at this. Thank you for another amazing video! PS: I've wasted years of my life trying to make a decision on CPT & Taxonomy slug names (joking).
I dont remember the timestamp, but when you put the slug, i.e. repair_cat , would it not be better to write "category" instead of "cat" because of SEO? Has CPTUI also a Repeater? Im thinking about to buy ACPT , what do you think about?
So this is how WordPress manages its MySQL Database relationships from within WordPress Dashboard! I was wondering about this! Every day is a school day. I can't help what other ways there are to do this... sure I'll find out in time!

I've done both
- Relationships (you said you were covering that already)
- Deep dive into permalink structure for CPT and taxonomies. If you turn off archive for the CPT can you use that slug for a page? I like my url's to make sense and it can be tricky because the CPT slug and taxonomy slug have to be unique.

Thank you so much for this, it is really an eye opener to the scope of what can be done. It has certainly given me some new ideas for my next projects. This stuff is invaluable!
Glad it was helpful!
It’s good architecture to silo content
Is the premium training available now?
There’s been many using CPTs in the IC. About to start a new one as well for a new part of geary.co
great vid, really helpful
thank u for this post type video... can i expect more deep video regarding the post type and repeater things... also please show some tips for wocommerce sites... thank u again for putting your time and effort sir....
@@Gearyco Thank you:)
Do you have video of how we actually use the CPT after we create them?
Yes, I've shown it in other tutorials here. And I have deep dive and full build tutorials where I show this stuff all the time inside my Inner Circle.
@@Gearyco I’m not finding it. Please help me locate the video when you have a minute.
Thank you.
Oxygen Repeater Premium Training? Hell yeah! ;)
+1
Thanks for this - enlightening indeed - I am a crocoblock convertee and a novice coder - you mention repeaters frequently and would this be (in Bricks)a template?
Bricks query loop
@@Gearyco I get it. Thank you
Another super useful video Kevin. Been using CPT + ACF a long time but still very helpful.
Very helpful video!! It would be great to see more videos on the use of custom post types and ACF with Oxygen! Finally I wanted to say "thanks!!" for your awesome tutorials Kevin!
More to come!
Yes to repeaters deep dive! And maybe what the heck wpfusion does!
Yes, for that reason too
Is it possible to use that not only for a client where himself has to put all the CPT manually and upload their image, but "any" user can register on his website and put a car to the website (i.e. with additional fields like color, price etc.) and the client as website owner can control and publish it as CPT? Or is therefore a further Plugin needed? A video about this way of a website would be nice:-)
Yes with WSForm
You mentioned "repeaters". how are you creating repeaters? Is that part of CPT?
There is a repeater/loop element in bricks and oxygen.
Awesome video Kevin! Would you advise to store brands for WooCommerce product under a new post type or as a taxonomy under the product post type? I'm still confused about that since I want to have gridbuilder facet filter the brand on an archive page for the product post type.
Can you give me more context as to what you're building?
@@Gearyco I'm building webshop for a music store that is specialised in keyboards, piano's and such. They have like 40 brands. At the moment I choose a taxonomy for the brands under the product post type so I can filter them with gridbuilder. I couldn't find a way to filter the items under a post type.
@@alexander-van-aken You're going to want to add a new custom taxonomy called Brands to the Woo products post type.
@@Gearyco Cool, then I did it the right way. Thanks for verifying that!
Great video. Which app is between Finder and Spotify?
LogiCapture. I don't use it, though. Should probably remove, lmao.
We Have been using ACF Pro and CPT UI. Can you elaborate on your transition to Metabox?
I just prefer it
I'm new to CPTs and trying to figure out which tools I should invest to.
@@basilbabaa1628 Thank you very much for your insights!
"Creating a template" for Custom Post Type 34:14 - What do you mean by this?
You can assign a page template to a CPT so all the posts have the same layout.
I am advanced with custom post types and this video was still extremely helpful. You are really good at this. Thank you for another amazing video! PS: I've wasted years of my life trying to make a decision on CPT & Taxonomy slug names (joking).
The struggle is real!
I dont remember the timestamp, but when you put the slug, i.e. repair_cat , would it not be better to write "category" instead of "cat" because of SEO?
Has CPTUI also a Repeater? Im thinking about to buy ACPT , what do you think about?
That won’t have any impact on SEO. I prefer Metabox over ACF.
So this is how WordPress manages its MySQL Database relationships from within WordPress Dashboard! I was wondering about this! Every day is a school day. I can't help what other ways there are to do this... sure I'll find out in time!
