      remle ikawura if a system codec got messed up its because you messed it up klite keeps all current codec profiles the same but it does allow you to change them so maybe you hit something by accident and assumed it was klite that did it. o and if you set your default playback to higher than 44.1khz i believe it is will cause many games to crash because their codecs do not support anything higher

      I've been using K-lite for close to 5 years on 3 different computers with AMD/Nvidia GPU's and I've never had anything crash due to a codec problem. If something crashes it almost ALWAYS because the game I'm playing is a wretched PC port in the first place and nothing to do with how my codecs are set up ;p

    • @sundhaug92
      @sundhaug92 10 лет назад +1

      The difference is in lossy compression, think of it like chopping of more or less parts of the clip.

    • @MODEPIIC
      @MODEPIIC 10 лет назад +4

      it has a higher bit rate

    • @KN100
      @KN100 10 лет назад +27

      lossy compression is the process of creating averages in the data. For example a video codec might notice that there's a lot of white behind Linus and as such decide that instead of storing the slight alterations in colour it'll store it in blocks of colour instead. This is why if you watch a DVD you'll notice slightly blocky skies. This has the advantage of being much smaller but the disadvantage of irreparably changing the data. Uncompressed or Losslessly compressed data stores the data without actually changing the output at all. In its simplest form, each pixel has a colour value in each frame and is saved one by one. Lossless compression codecs will compress the file in a similar way to how a Zip file does but that's a lot to explain in a RUclips comment. Basically lossy compression actually removes data from the stream in a way its creators hope you won't notice. There's a lot of technology working to compress your videos - and its all based on what your human eye can't see, ie. Being as transparent as possible.
      Hope that helps!

      I beta test for them and at this moment I don't recommend them. People will fall into a trap. Well not trap but will be unhappy if they get it now. The apps on Mac and Android have been broke for a while now. Not staying connected. This is public release and BETA release. So shows they haven't a clue how to fix it. I have had to revert to a version before 2.0 on android. It works then but if you get it from the Google store it is broken.

      @inCawHoots 10 лет назад

      That's unfortunate. When I used it (3 years ago), it worked great that I used its service trial then I went for a month service. It was worth it then. After that, I was like, "meh" and left it aside. I never touched it after that.

      Marcus Smith yeah. As a beta tester it wouldn't bother me. But when the public release is doing it as well its annoying sure. Hopefully they do.

    Codecs and containers are easily confused, for example .mp4 is usually associated with lossy video, but can also contain lossy AAC files as well as lossless compressed music files in the ALAC format: which is why it's usually changed to m4a.

    Hi all. I'm confused about codecs. I want to upload video I've used my phone to record at 4k60fps with the H.264 codec. Phone video is variable frame rate which means I have to convert it to a constant frame rate. My editor gives me good, better, best options which are H.264, DNxHR, and UT Video respectively. DNxHR and UT Video are insanely huge but uncompressed. I'm wondering if there would be any difference in quality though going from H.264 to H.264? Then when it is time what should I export to? If I understand correctly RUclips is going to use VP9 but does my export codec have any impact on end product on RUclips? How do I balance this out because a 30 minute video with one of the larger codecs is roughly 500gb which with a 50mbps upload(fastest I can get) it will take almost a day.
    So short version is, when converting a 4k60fps H.264 video from VFR to CFR does using H.264 cause more loss or do I need a better codec? Whatever codec I used for conversion, what should I use to determine export codec after editing if my intent is 4k60fps uploading to RUclips that will use VT9?

  • @xnamkcor
    @xnamkcor 10 лет назад

    I've uploaded large files to RUclips because they refuse to support lossless codecs. The most recent one was about 18GB and had less than 5 minutes of video. Considering most of the size comes from me having to resize the video so RUclips actually uses a decent bitrate, a lossless codec would almost completely nullify the difference in filesizes due to information hardly changing.

    Just for an idea of how big these audio files can be, titanfall uses uncompressed audio for the PC version, the game is only 15GB while the audio is 35GB. So just the uncompressed audio is more than double the file size of everything else in the game.

      NeilFX GOM eats VLC any day of the week. So much more settings to set, better codec system, easier to use and more advanced if you want it to be. VLC doesn't even come close. I used VLC for about 4-5 years or something. It had alot of bugs, it's crashing alot and some other problems. Have had very small and very few issues with GOM. And the ones I've had got solved by a simple google search. Whereas when I googled for VLC problems, no one had the sollution.
      My friends still use VLC. They complain alot. The ones that use GOM complain WAY less and some of them never.
      Your IT studenting didn't help you on this question, man. Use GOM for another year and then come back to say that it's worse. If you do say it is you'll be lying.

      Ya K-lite is much better maintained and updated then the other two and they have made it easier to install newer packs over older ones now with the quick upgrade (without losing all your settings like before). I mean they have had like two major updates and 2 minor ones over the last two months alone where CCCP/VLC can go months without an update. I used to use K-Lite and always had a backup player in the form of KMPlayer, because K-Lite just doesn't work with everything. Then i switched to KMPlayer entirely since it worked better than K-Lite, but then they "evolved" and i had to get rid of it, and now i use GOM Player, so far so good.
    I didn't like VLC for a lot of reasons (not playback related)

    So is a codec a file format? Or is it a program/software that performs the actions? Or is it a driver that works with different file types?

    • @jayvl09
      @jayvl09 8 лет назад +2

      +Ankit Guliani In most contexts it is a software component responsible for encoding and/or decoding compressed media streams (like video or audio streams).

      +Ankit Guliani As Linus, I'm guessing his name is, said, software codecs pack up data. So does this mean that a codec compresses data (not that I really know for sure what that means) ? And if so, is there any data loss during this?

    • @jayvl09
      @jayvl09 8 лет назад +1

      yes it compresses or decompresses. Compression may be lossy or lossless depending on which codec and settings are used.

    so basically, with higher and higher video quality coming to a end within the next decade (getting as detailed as the human eye allows) and with videos remaining the same length in duration, as well as 5g around the corner we just have to wait for Moore's law to catch up to where lossless compression no longer becomes an issue, where net speeds can stream 60 gigs worth with ease, and hard drive space reaches into the hundreds of terabytes, is this correct, or will it ALWAYS be a "cat and mouse game" within a lifetimes (foreseeable) future? (now to 50 years from now?)

    I use K-Lite Codec Pack (Mega). It can integrate itself with Windows Media Player to play formats not originally designed to play, such as *.flv, *.mkv, and *.ogg. The benefits are more noticeable in Windows XP than say Windows 7 because WMP11 plays less formats on its own compared to WMP12, although both media players can benefit. It even has a DVD decoder; ffmpeg or LAV.
    One of the biggest problems with Windows 8/8.1 is that DVD playback has been forced out of WMP12. I understand that Microsoft didn't want to include the codecs anymore past Windows 7 because money but why not leave the DVD option in the menus? The worst that would happen is an error that no codec has been installed. Microsoft's reasoning is forcing standards of live streaming content rather than having backwards compatibility with the older disk formats. True, VLC Media Player can run on Windows 8/8.1 but why not leave the DVD playback open-ended?

    This! Still left me confused the reason codecs still matter is because you have Xbox and other consoles but require you to format your media certain way and that's why I still have to understand them even though I don't want to

    Or just install the free version of Zoom Player, don't install anything but the Install Center and have it download and install the Codecs for you. As this prevents the issues with possibly having multiple Codecs with different versions.

    So when i play a bluray ripped .avi file, the resolution is quite good, but its kinda choppy and not synced with the audio, is it my player or is the video file just bad?

    • @Tatertot01
      @Tatertot01 10 лет назад

      If you try to play the file on multiple players and get the same results it's probably not the player. Try VLC, MPC-HC, and another one like Potplayer.
      It could be the vid file is bad or not synced properly. Or it might be your computer is not powerful enough to play the file. If the file uses a more cpu/graphic intensive codec, like H.264, that can cause choppy playback if your pc isn't up to snuff.
      You can use a program like MediaInfo to find out what codecs the file contains.

    Quickie episode suggestion. Mice sensor types and dpi. I was recently wondering about the dpi mostly. At around 4k dpi that most gamer mice offer these days, 1cm of movement of the mouse gives you like 2000px movement of the cursor on the screen. That makes it impossible to operate so.... why go that high with the dpi? Is this just for the marketing?

    What about where there are fewer colours in the image particularly at darker ranges where it is so horrible and looks so bad. Like a sunset where the gradient change of colours throught the sky suddenly changes from each section to next with very noticable difference in colour between them raher than gradual. This is another form of compression I presume? What is that particular form of compression called? I'm guessing youtube uses it and that you cant change it by any chance even when uploading?! hah - I mean it is really bad sometimes. Why cant that type of compression be removed but keep the others? Or is it just with h.264 or whatever that you just get what you get and h264 is what it is and you cant change different parts of the compression or encode with some compression features but not others. I want hq 4k vids but this apparent youtube compression spoils them. Do they just use standard h264?

  • @amartinez97

    I rip all my CD's into WAV and FLAC files, I'll settle for a 320kb MP3 or AAC file from Itunes if I have to, and mainly only with rap/hip hop since that genre tends to be harder to distinguish from lossless to lossy probably due to smaller dynamic range compared to other genres using real instruments.

    The technology exists! It just hasn't been widely adopted yet. Unfortunately by the time we can finally start streaming lossless 1080p people will probably need 4K and beyond, which will force us to go back to compression again.

    The few drawbacks i have seen with vlc is.
    No .wav support... wtf is the use for that one anyways? Seems to only be used for 8 bit or 16 bit audio, and last time i had one it was a pain in the ass to convert.
    Cant play gif files... dunno why. Wmp does both of thesw though and this where i use it.
