It's the inevitable result of conflating even the most mild critiques of US capitalism with the state atheism policy of the USSR. Limits on free enterprise = socialism = oppression of Christians.
It's not a heresy in the technical sense (i.e. there are no condemnations of the doctrine by an ecumenical council, nor has a splinter group formed as a result of the teaching), but it is routinely called a heresy even in Evangelical circles. That's not to say that a teacher of the prosperity gospel can't be a heretic in the strict meaning of the term. The modalist heresy (which teaches that God consists of only one person who performs three roles, in contrast to the three-person monotheism of orthodox Nicene Christianity) is popular in some branches of Pentecostalism, for instance. Creflo Dollar has been called a heretic on both fronts.
It's doubly ridiculous since Luther got angry at catholic church because of exactly the same reasons. And then the contrreformation came so now, at least ideologically, Catholics are less concerned with wealth than some Protestants

Hi, I'm a service technician for home medical equipment. A hospital bed with an air mattress and a wheelchair shouldn't cost more than $2400 to buy outright. And if they have insurance, the cost would be even lower. While that hurts his boat fund, he's still got 20 grand if he buys everything outright. And I refuse to believe shelves, landscaping, and door paint costs 20k. He's just a prick.
And am I the only one who thinks that if a boat costs their entire savings, he shouldn't be getting one? You need insurance for it, maintenance, gas, a truck & trailer to tow it to and from the water, etc... If you've bought a car, you'll know that just acquiring the car itself is only half the battle.
That's a great point. Door paint + landscaping + shelves...maybe a couple grand? Is this supposed to be a relatable plot point, weighing the cost of someone's medical needs and a reasonable, relatively inexpensive quality-of-living set of improvements vs an extravagant, savings-draining, ongoing and completely unnecessary and selfish expense as something that a regular man struggles with (and should struggle with)?
One of my good friends was having marital problems and her and her husband saw this as a way to help their marriage. Over 10 years later, she's happily single and feels better.
I know this is years later but if you don’t mind me asking, how did it go? Did the relationship appear better for a bit and then the cracks began to show again? Did the relationship just not improve at all? Did they respect the effort but decide they weren’t right for each other? Was it actually a terrible marriage that one side attempted to “fix” with this? I’m just curious how something like this plays out in real life

I have PTSD, not from domestic violence or anything but I can tell you right now that if anyone yells at me like he yelled at her I would have a fucking screaming panic attack, I'd pass out on the floor. And if his wife reacted with actual fear someone on set might have cared. He's a terrible actor and that was the first time anything he said in this movie felt real.

As if the role of "woman who comes to sincerely love Kirk Cameron" was outside of her range as an actor or something.
At the time, his real wife was in her mid 40s, while his movie wife was in her mid 20s. Kirk can’t be onscreen married to some old broad. Ageism at its Christian finest.

Funny thing about that quote, I've heard a religious right politician, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, seriously argue that some translations say the needle is actually a large hoop for grains and that it could be argued that wealthy people would have no problem getting in. It was utter nonsense but it speaks volumes about how manipulative evangelicals are with rhetoric. They'll waffle on what the bible said about greed, diet, tattoos, polygamy, slavery, etc. but take vague quotes as clear-cut law on other issues.

As a pastor in an evangelical church, let me casually lean against a cross and say that you are right. "Christian" films like these aren't interested in exploring the actual human experience or the actual divine mystery (that, as you said, comes down to faith, not fact... at least not any facts that we can actually verify). They serve as propaganda, preying on our fears and uncertainty, pretending to offer hope and comfort when really it just makes us better consumers of the Faith Industry. 'Cause don't forget there was an actual Love Dare book that you could purchase so that you too could be just like KC and "save your marriage" just like he did, without having to actually confront your own ego, toxic masculinity, or all the ways that you illegitimize and undermine your partner through culturally-endorsed mysogyny. Whoops! Got a little snarky there... sorry! For reals though, Dudes, let's fix our hearts. Great vid, MMF, as always.

Honestly the stuff the wife brings up in Fire Proof like land scaping and painting the back door are more important than a boat. They own a house and that comes with the responsibility of maintaining it. Also none of those things cost nearly as much as a boat. If you can afford a boat then you can afford all that shit.
Yeah that's what I thought as well, obviously maintaining your house is significantly more important than making an expensive purchase for no practical reasons because you think it will be fun. Especially when it's a fucking boat, that's like the archetypal bad financial decision because they have so many costs associated in maintaining them.
Yeah, you could probably do all that stuff for under $200. It's more of an indictment about how lazy Kirk is that he won't do basic stuff around the house or at least hire someone to do it.
Right! And let’s say they live in a HOA. Not getting issues like that maintained could mean they get fined, or that the HOA takes legal action against them. So getting those issues taken care of matters way more than a boat!
I keep coming back to that "I made the decision to love your mother whether she deserves it or not." There is SO much awful/horrible/evil in that one statement. So much toxic masculinity, so much stalking/abuse, so much women-as-property... it makes my skin crawl.
@@JP2GiannaT It's the use of the word "deserve." This statement implies that there are moment where Kirk's mom doesn't deserve love, but Dad gives it anyway. Which is pretty abhorrent. However, it's clearly supposed to be working as a theological nod: a core tenant of many flavors of Christianity is that humans do not deserve God's love, but he is kind enough to love us anyway. This isn't the same as "sometimes you won't feel loving every day, but it's still on you to act in a loving manner." That's good parenting advice, friendship advice, relationship advice...assuming those are overall healthy friendships and relationships.
@@JP2GiannaT because he's the one who decides that she "doesn't deserve" love. And he's granting his unworthy, undeserving wife "love" like he's doing her a favour. A lot of controlling relationship involve one partner acting like everything they do is a sacrifice for the other, or like they're a generous person giving love to someone even though they don't deserve it That's exactly how pickup artists operate, undermining their target's self worth and then presenting themselves as someone who'll magnanimously look past those flaws, aren't you lucky, nobody else would put up with you etc. Sounds a lot like that mindset
Initial thought for me was "is this a poorly expressed notion of unconditional love?" but it's not poorly expressed. the implication of his partner being undeserving makes it a twisted version of that notion.
Funny how Kirk's acting is only really convincing in the scene where he is yelling in his wife's face. Like, he legit evokes some bad childhood memories for me in that moment. It was so crappy because I was miserable and they basically said I wasn’t trying hard enough to love this man who was making me miserable. I thanked them for the advice and filed anyway. I’m happier one year post-divorce than I have been in years.
I personally believe love is an action. If you are abusive I don't care about your feelings, you clearly aren't being loving. If love is a decision, then we don't have to make it though so that's good
Isn't it funny that when it's going badly, "love is a decision," and when you say "then I decide I don't wanna do this anymore" suddenly it's not a decision you're allowed to make

I've been away from that ideology and community for a long time, so I was surprised at my immediately defensive reaction to your criticism of that idea, and then really sad at how many people continue to build their lives around ignoring their feelings and convincing themselves that love has nothing to do with feelings. It is a deeply influential and toxic ideology, and I'm glad you made this video. I definitely hope a fluke of the algorithm puts it in front of some eyeballs that might need it.
I think it is important to remember that both actions and feelings play a part in a healthy relationship, but they are separate and two distinguishable aspects. The fact that I love(feeling) my husband is what leads to me putting in the hard work to maintain a good relationship. But, I agree with you, telling people to ignore their feelings and whatnot is a horrible, horrible message. It's alarming how well this movie portrays the cycle of abuse without realizing it. The abuser abuses and goes too far which causes the victim to wise up and decide to leave. The abuser then freaks out because they're losing control of their victim, so they lovebomb (er, love dare?) the victim with fake, but grand, gestures of affection until the victim decides the abuser is sorry and really loves them after all and comes back. All we're missing is Fireproof II where Kirk escalates and begins beating her when he discovers that he's still married to a human being and not an automaton, only to have *yet another* come-to-Jesus, and maybe a part III for good measure where she leaves him and he kills her in the first ten minutes of the film, only to be *finally* redeemed by a good, properly submissive Christian woman who marries him in prison and convinces some horrifying Republican governor to commute his sentence.
Except in the context of this movie, none of that happens. His heart really does change, eats dirt, and makes no excuses for his behavior after changing. None of the abusive behaviors are trivialized, or praised.
Lady, I'm a very angry, confused, depressed Mormon. Thank you for everything you've said. I need to see the world from outside spaces to figure out how I really feel. I am not a science denier, and people shame me for it. I'm so tired of feeling shamed and inadequate. Thank you again, Maggie.
I used to be an angry, confused, depressed Mormon. I had my name removed from the records in 2016 and have been happier. Sometimes still angry, confused, or depressed, but no longer surrounded by people who tell me it's a sign of spiritual inadequacy or that I'm not trying hard enough to not have mental illnesses. It gave me permission to explore myself and come out as nonbinary and start transition. So I hope you do whatever feels right for you. Leaving was right for me. It didn't fix all my problems, but it removed the voices that were so confusing and frustrating from my life and let me direct my own life for the first time.
Evangelical christianity is also a Christianity where the pastor doesn't get formal education in theology to be able to read the Bible in a historical and cultural setting.
Like, I appreciate the whole protestant idea of democratizing the bible and saying that normal people should be able to read the bible without a priest to interpret for them (back in the day most people were illiterate and actually couldn't read the bible at all) but i hate what it's become. any asshole with a cheap suit can rent a podium and preach any old thing that comes to mind. And tons of people will gravitate to him (because it's always a he) and treat him like he's god himself! and any cross word against the *pastor* is treated as blasphemy against god himself. I hate it lol
True, my sister goes to a church with two pastors (one an embezzling engineer and the other a p*dophi*ic highschool teacher). The thief claims the money he stole is a blessing from God (he's super rich now) and encourages congregants to be corrupt to benefit Christians like them and male. The teacher is a child trafficking, conman and pretty great at grooming and indoctrination. She's starting to see the light but her husband is not and will probably never be.
Every preacher I've talked to or had experience with, as far as I know, has had formal theological training. . .so maybe don't generalize your experience to everyone.
@@garrusn7702 Yet none of them can ever agree on what it actually means, it's almost as if their formal training has no bearing on interpreting the bible or claiming one thing is true over another.
Is, uh...that an actual interpretation of that commandment? When I was growing up in the faith I was taught that that meant not to use God or any of his other names as a curse word...
@@ryanahr2267 I was raised in the faith too and learned the same interpretation you have, but now that I'm grown, claiming to speak for God in order to benefit personally seems so much worse than cussing
i went to christian schools, they showed us this movie over a week and made us write essays every day about the section we watched and what we learned about god and love. this was 6th grade
OMG. My sister saw this with her church group at the movies and she laughed her butt off because they don’t come right out and say he’s looking at internet porn. Some older woman was a loud whisperer and kept saying she didn’t understand. Another audience meme rep really loudly said “Porn. he’s looking at porn. “ my sister said it was hilarious.
I screamed yes throughout this whole video pretty much. I was raised on this Evangelical atmosphere, and it makes me feel so liberated to watch people break down their hypocrisies. Thank you ✌️❤️
Man, I grew up in an evangelical home and I saw this movie growing up. My parents always told me that love was “doing what’s good for another person even when they don’t accept it.” And this movie reminds me of that attitude so much and how paternalistic and hurtful that definition of love is. I was taught growing up that love wasn’t what you felt but what you did for other people. Therefore, forcing yourself to do favors for someone you were “supposed to love” was the epitomy of love, a bond of mutual indebtedness. As I get older, I’m learning that the bonds we have with others shouldnt be driven by guilt and duty but mutual understanding and empathy. But it’s been a lot of unlearning. Also I think the reason they dont go into detail about Kirk Cameron’s porn habits is bc you’d have to share salacious details that might horrify born again moviegoers. Also you did not discuss the gem of a scene where Kirk Cameron destroys his computer with a baseball bat to purge himself of sin. Anyway thanks for making this video and I’m sorry for this very long comment.
“doing what’s good for another person even when they don’t accept it” explains so much of the conservative christian mentality. Both the part about exhausting yourself by giving all your time and energy to a relationship that doesn't give you anything back, and the part about forcing your definition of "what good for another person" on them no matter how much they want you to stop.
Man, this idea of love is so ingrained in non-christians just as much and I don't understand why. I've experienced it with a partner where both of us were technically atheistic and feminists, but the patriarchal and religious socialization/abuse we both suffered as children won out. Still wrapping my mind around this phenomenon Guilt and indebtedness bonds are absolute hell and such an easy gateway for abuse to seep in.
That scene is fucking hilarious, pointlessly destroying an expensive piece of tech that is very useful being somehow a good act. Truly this is a movie made by millionaires.
This is so accurate to real like growing up as an Evangelical Christian. I'm just coming out of all that religious pressure and it sure does take a lot of time and patience. Anyone else going through that too, you're not alone. 💗
In middle school this movie was sold in my church’s gift shop. I remember the pastor saying it was a really good film that will help your marriage. My mom bought it and I think watched it? I don’t remember her ever talking about it, but considering how toxic her marriage was and still is it was probably hard for her to sit through. :( I just can’t imagine that anyone with good judgement would earnestly recommend this movie to anyone as a solution to their relationship problems.
That's the thing with Christians I really resent. They have no real concept of the world or the people in it, only caricatures. I grew up evangelical and left at 22. I kept looking for all these hateful, lost people I'd been hearing about and realize the version I was shown didn't exist. Likewise, these movies have people believing that every person claiming to be a Christian is unwaveringly and effortlessly good, emotionally intelligent and very seasoned in their walk with God. Still looking for those Christians...
Sandra Llewellyn no way, we Christian are SO NOT PERFECT ... AT ALL ... we are not effortlessly good (we definitely make mistakes) and our walk with God is not seasoned it is full of ups and downs and twists and turns (believe me, I get angry at God sometimes for things I’m going though) we just...if we are going through hard times, we turn to him and he helps us through it
I love that you acknowledged that Jesus was a radical figure. It's amazing how *American evangelicals can just suck the soul out of any meaningful ideas in the Bible. Btw thanks for captioning your videos! ✌
I disagree that Jesus was necessary "anti-authoritarian". He demanded that his followers shun their families and threatened anyone who didn't believe in him to burn in Hell. Jesus was a cult leader and who may have hated the Roman Empire, but he was certainly not above being a controlling leader himself.
@@NinjaGamr64 Eh, some of his language reflects the reasonable requirements that a group of disciples would have to adhere to in order to follow around an itinerant rabbi. I mean, he was roaming around all over the place in Galilee and Judea. His students really couldn't divide their loyalties if they wanted to be taught by him. (And it's worth remembering that to "hate" or "love" someone in a 1st century Jewish context is to show them a varying degree of favor through your actions, not to express a certain kind of emotion toward them. This notion is what Fireproof is trying and failing to explore.) Also, a whole lot of the "hell" (literally "Gehenna") stuff in the Gospels is apocalyptic language that alludes to the imagery of body pits in the books of the Israelite prophets. Basically, the message behind all of the symbolic wording is this: "If you don't listen to me, you're going to keep behaving in a way that's going to get you all killed." And, well, soon came the Jewish-Roman War, thanks in large part to radicals who wanted to fight off the Roman occupation. It turns out that the message of pacifism really could have helped those Judeans avoid a tragic outcome. Whether you take that message as prophetic insight or just doing a good job of reading the room is, of course, a matter of faith. (And more importantly, it grants no justification to modern-day antisemitism.)
Your essay explains Nietzsche's concept of "Slave Morality" better than any video I've seen. Both the husband and wife commit to denying their feelings (and their freedom to follow them) in order to pledge allegiance to the spiritualized authority of the state. I think you just ruined marriage for me, thanks Maggie,
He was great for Christianity by helping it grow. At same I wonder how view it as passive yet he should know faith struggle or struggle of Desert dwelling Fathers and Mothers. Their thing is about sacred struggle.
Don't feel bad, Marcus. True, functional marriages (and love relationships in general) are based on mutual respect, empathy and openness about each other's feelings; not on slavish devotion to bronze age gender roles and cultural impositions.
I remember being forced to watch this movie at teen youth group being told “this is what a Christian marriage needs to be,” and then when I left the church, at a work secret Santa I got this movie as my gift lol
God, my church had a huge event when this movie came out (on Valentine's Day of all days) and we all sat and watched this dumpster fire. All I could think the whole time was "This is the worst movie I have ever seen and I hate this man so much." Then christian stores and churches were peddling the companion devotional book so MUCH, and the advertising for Fireproof especially was EVERYWHERE. I got so fucking tired of watching bad marriage after bad marriage be "restored" through harmful books and ideologies like this. And rarely did those women ever find their way out. It's extremely depressing to see women's spiritual lights and personalities die after being conditioned to stay in a bad relationship because it's the good and godly thing to do.
@ many ideas were planted into my by this film. I think the most harmful one was the idea that because of god you have to stay in a place that isn't good for you. I remember that the first man I had intercourse with used this to convince me that I am married to him in the eyes of god (the whole Adam knew Eve and she became his wive thing). He then proceeded to bully me spiritually into staying with him. Sometimes it is better for people to break up, even if they are legitimately married. Caleb wasn't a good husband in this movie, this marriage isn't a good example of a healthy relationship. And yet this was used to teach me and my friends how a marriage should be. How a loving husband should act. How you should deal with problems in a relationship. This was the ultimate marriage goal. And it is bad.
Anneleen van Dyke god i’m sorry you went through that. i was raised an atheist and i’m genuinely floored at the messaging these evangelical films are steeped in, knowing full well they’re supposed to be turned to during hard times, positioned as ideals and watched as a family.
The film has bad theology and advice, and sadly, many churches also share these traits. Neither the husband nor the wife were behaving in ways that align with biblical marriage. Caleb should not be yelling, Catherine should not flirt with the doctor, and so forth. This movie is so bad, we don't even know how the relationship began and how it led to marriage.
I'm sure you're aware, but I just want to make it clear to anyone who isn't, but Ayn Rand was a pro-abortion rights atheist. Which is why all of these prosperity gospel vampires try to tout her economic ideas without naming her directly.
Britton Stanaland I’m saying they worship her economic policies, rather than the “God” or “Jesus” they tell everyone they do. I’m also being snarky, because I fucking hate conservatives.
My dad accidently rented Fire Proof when I was little and we were laughing our butts off the whole time. But never mind that, those Artemis Fowl novels behind Maggie are giving me intense nostalgia.
I grew up with a pentecostalist mom and got regularly dragged along to their meetings, and there was definitely an air of the pastor or a visiting preacher using their sermons/speeches to defend themselves. I remember one revival tent meeting where the preacher spent literally 90 minutes interpreting some tongue-speaking woman's ramblings (which, in the pentecostalist context, comes directly from god) into a very specific speech about how we should not be so critical of god's servants (ie. pastors and preachers). Very convenient.
Fun fact: They sold actual copies of The Love Dare as merch for this movie. Not-so-fun fact: I know this because I found one in my childhood home while cleaning it out. Good to know that my parents' marriage was secretly failing before I was even in middle school, I guess...
the whole time im watching this im just thinking how this is definitely at least 1 person's favorite movie, and how much that can say about a person. art is truly amazing in the best and worst of ways
"Love is definitely a feeling" The evangelical view of love is based on agápē/caritas. In the English translations of the bible it is written as 'love' but may be more accurately described as charity. It's self sacrifice despite feelings. Chesterton put it as "To love means loving the unlovable."
@@thomashester2 I get what the movie was trying to go for. Acting toward the benefit of others even when you are personally are not fond of them is not a bad thing. I would describe that as acting loving towards them. The problem is with how ham fisted the movie tried to display that. Kirk is an abusive arsehole. The wife was 100% right to leave. Evangelicals twist it like you should stay in a physically or emotionally abusive relationship.
@@poposterous236 love in terms of the concept of agápē doesn't rely on a personal fondness or dislike of someone. In ancient Greek there are another 3 words describing the concept of love. It's amazing how prevalent this "transactional" view of relationships is among Christians. Even liberal Christians who may not agree with the heirarchical ideas still act as though love can only be expressed through material gestures.
Jesus; "Its easier for a camel to fit into the eye of the needle than for a rich man to get into heaven." Evangelicals; "I need a new jet because there are demons in couch."
I sat in a Lutheran church and had to listen to the preacher describe how "the eye of the needle" was the name of a small gate in the wall of Jerusalem, so a camel could fit if they unpacked it. Literally the whole sermon, just "well actually what Jesus meant was it's fine to be rich it just requires some maneuvering. Hand around that basket, folks, contribute too." Wasn't some ultra-conservative megachurch either; this is just what modern christianity looks like.
@@cam4636 this "requires some maneuvering" interpretation is hilarious but sadly accurate and i will borrow it for future jokes if you don't mind. Pure gold i love it
@@cam4636 It's such a funny excuse because for one you can easily confirm that no such gate existed, we know what Jerusalem looked like at the time and no contemporary sources mention this. But also throughout the Bible Jesus always uses very clear metaphors and if he was referring to an actual physical location and not using symbolism he would have made that clear, or the character of Jesus in the Bible would. Also his attitude to rich people is very clear throughout and this is not the only example of him condemning him. Also this is the kind of shit that medieval Christians got right, there are tons of texts from monks criticizing contemporary lords or bishops for being too rich and pointing to the Bible for their justification. American Evangelicals literally are more gullible than medieval Christians, the guys who had no access to modern media of any kind.
@@erraticonteuse How convenient that you have not only found a video that confirms your biases but also allows you to feel an aire of moral superiority. Meanwhile, it is theology that codifies the subjugation of women, and authoritarian rule for mass consumption.
I was forced to watch this movie multiple times as a kid, and I still can't get over how much this entire thing is infested with the idea of money. The Love Dare is an ACTUAL book you can buy. But it's even worse than that. The first time was made to watch this movie was as a family, the second was for a movie event. What is a movie event, you ask? The Kendrick Brothers sell movie events to churches and theaters. Basically, you watch the movie and take notes and discuss the film after viewing it. But in order to do these events, you have to buy a license. The license for this movie is $114 for a year. If Jesus knew about the Kendrick Brothers, he'd be in their church flipping the tables over.
Thank you for this deep dive into these films. I grew up in a church oriented home and could never articulate the obscurity of these creations. Also that Christmas movie uses the THRASHER magazine font for their title for extra edge
Wow the mom's immediate response wasn't "You can't marry your father because he's your father" it was "you can't marry your father because he's my husband already." Really acting like this little girl is going to steal her man. Gross.

Prosperity gospel is such a weirdly american thing. It´s like one step removed from actually worshiping money and the free market ad deities.
It's the inevitable result of conflating even the most mild critiques of US capitalism with the state atheism policy of the USSR. Limits on free enterprise = socialism = oppression of Christians.
Isn't it a heresy?

And I refuse to believe shelves, landscaping, and door paint costs 20k. He's just a prick.
Good info. Thanks
But god wants eggshell white, so it shall be!
the reason the moms medical bills weren't brought up is because christians believe you can pray sickness away...

As a pastor in an evangelical church, let me casually lean against a cross and say that you are right. "Christian" films like these aren't interested in exploring the actual human experience or the actual divine mystery (that, as you said, comes down to faith, not fact... at least not any facts that we can actually verify). They serve as propaganda, preying on our fears and uncertainty, pretending to offer hope and comfort when really it just makes us better consumers of the Faith Industry.

Because love shouldn't be based on whether or not the other person deserves anything?
Just trying to make sure I understand your point.
A lot of controlling relationship involve one partner acting like everything they do is a sacrifice for the other, or like they're a generous person giving love to someone even though they don't deserve it
That's exactly how pickup artists operate, undermining their target's self worth and then presenting themselves as someone who'll magnanimously look past those flaws, aren't you lucky, nobody else would put up with you etc. Sounds a lot like that mindset
Initial thought for me was "is this a poorly expressed notion of unconditional love?" but it's not poorly expressed. the implication of his partner being undeserving makes it a twisted version of that notion.

The whole "Christians are anti-science or anti-rationality" is painting with a pretty wide (and misinformed) brush considering (for one) that a Christian (Sir Francis Bacon) was an inventer and proponent of the scientific method.
So somehow, the wife who's actually at the end of receiving the abuse, is completely ignored and dismissed.

My husband and I came from a church like that where couples would swear up and down that they were called to be together, even though they admitted they couldn't stand each other on their own. They had a big wedding that was so "anointed", they'd have kids, then next thing you hear, they got divorced and hated each other again. True story! @@denisemayosky1955 I could be wrong, but the wife is a doctor at the hospital. To me, this means 2 things; first she doesn't need Kirk, financially speaking. Secondly, this means if she chose, she could leave and be absolutely fine. Supporting her ailing father may be more difficult, but still probably better than submitting herself hostage by taking his support. Fact is, the husband in the movie could use the fact of him providing support as something against her...
As someone who grew up in the homeschool realm and spent high school and college in deeply fundamental circles, it was harder than I expected hear you confront the movie's mantra that love isn't a feeling but a decision and feelings aren't trustworthy. I"m here to tell you that sitting under that ideology during the impressionable teenaged years still deeply affects my ability to deal with and incorporate feelings into my decisions and daily life.
Our therapist puts a lot of emphasis on the fact that our feelings of love for each are clearly there and strong, and the force behind the work that we're putting into our relationship, but either feelings or actions without the other aren't going to bring about a healthy relationship. I wish you all the best in your journey of healing

The teacher is a child trafficking, conman and pretty great at grooming and indoctrination.

Still wrapping my mind around this phenomenon
Guilt and indebtedness bonds are absolute hell and such an easy gateway for abuse to seep in.
I just can’t imagine that anyone with good judgement would earnestly recommend this movie to anyone as a solution to their relationship problems.
The fact that your church had a "gift shop" is an exact and poignant example of what's really wrong with Christian doctrine.
AT ALL ... we are not effortlessly good (we definitely make mistakes) and our walk with God is not seasoned it is full of ups and downs and twists and turns (believe me, I get angry at God sometimes for things I’m going though) we just...if we are going through hard times, we turn to him and he helps us through it
Nini L not all church’s have gift shops
This notion is what Fireproof is trying and failing to explore.)
Also, a whole lot of the "hell" (literally "Gehenna") stuff in the Gospels is apocalyptic language that alludes to the imagery of body pits in the books of the Israelite prophets.

Wow tell what city that was in so I can never move there lol
God, my church had a huge event when this movie came out (on Valentine's Day of all days) and we all sat and watched this dumpster fire. All I could think the whole time was "This is the worst movie I have ever seen and I hate this man so much."
Then christian stores and churches were peddling the companion devotional book so MUCH, and the advertising for Fireproof especially was EVERYWHERE.
As an ex young christian girl I cannot explain how badly this film harms people.
How? Can you give an example?
Oh poor baby don't cry need a hug lol

"Love is definitely a feeling"
The evangelical view of love is based on agápē/caritas. In the English translations of the bible it is written as 'love' but may be more accurately described as charity. It's self sacrifice despite feelings. Chesterton put it as "To love means loving the unlovable."
McBlazington thank you for describing this
It’s a sacrificial love
Your feelings are valid but also choose to love
@@thomashester2 I get what the movie was trying to go for. Acting toward the benefit of others even when you are personally are not fond of them is not a bad thing. I would describe that as acting loving towards them.
The problem is with how ham fisted the movie tried to display that. Kirk is an abusive arsehole. The wife was 100% right to leave. Evangelicals twist it like you should stay in a physically or emotionally abusive relationship.
So love is only love if you're loving something you don't actually love?
For "love thy neighbour" sure that's a good definition of love. But when talking about your romantic partner it sounds pretty awful.

It's amazing how prevalent this "transactional" view of relationships is among Christians. Even liberal Christians who may not agree with the heirarchical ideas still act as though love can only be expressed through material gestures.
Jesus; "Its easier for a camel to fit into the eye of the needle than for a rich man to get into heaven."
Evangelicals; "I need a new jet because there are demons in couch."
I sat in a Lutheran church and had to listen to the preacher describe how "the eye of the needle" was the name of a small gate in the wall of Jerusalem, so a camel could fit if they unpacked it. @@cam4636 It's such a funny excuse because for one you can easily confirm that no such gate existed, we know what Jerusalem looked like at the time and no contemporary sources mention this.
