- Demonstration of a mid-60s Magnatone M10-A amplifier. I'm using a DeArmond M77-T guitar plugged straight in. The all-tube, 1x12 combo amp features two channels, a stereo input the bridges the channels, spring reverb and pitch-modulating vibrato.
sweet im glad somone finally did a really good video of a m10A and explained all the controlls and options thanks
Excellent video. Great demo of all the dials. Everything sounds amazing! Thanks!
Thanks man; it's a very cool, very different sort of amp.
@@leonc1234 Yes I can see that. I've played a couple 60s Magnatones at various shops but none have sounded as good as yours. An M10a just came up on Marketplace near me and it looks kind of beat up
@@tom.mihalis you are definitely going to need to try it before you buy it. Not only have they all aged (and been maintained) differently at this point in time, but you need to know these are fragile and very hard to work on; it's not a practical amp for gigging.
@@leonc1234 Thanks. Yes I was planning to have it as a studio amp. I'm hoping to come across a nice sounding ones, like yours, one day!
Got it. Good luck.
I have one of these amps. I use to roll it on a homemade dolly to practice 1967 It's point to point wiring so some of the connections broke apart in the vibrato section I took it apart a fix it in 69 about 12 years ago I put in a Vox Blue speaker. unbelievable difference in tone. great amps. Thanks for sharing c];-D
Yeah, the construction of these M-series Magnatones leaves a lot to be desired--very fragile. Fortunately, this one has been pretty much pampered and is in darn near perfect condition.
Oh my god I want that thing so bad. Sounds gorgeous.
What a treasure. Sounds great. Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome!
Hey Richard, thanks mang. Dave Friedman is the man. Our friend in Redondo, M.R., just bought one of his hot-rodded Marshalls and is really diggin it.
beautiful chiming sound - i dig it
My impression of the new Magnatones was that their basic underlying tonality is in fact more useful and will appeal to more people than the old amps like this one. They sounded a bit more like BF Fender amps...but the vibrato on them was very much in the old Magnatone school. I think this kind of amp will have broader appeal. The vibrato and reverb in the new amps does sound very, very good!
btw i heard this amp do three things I've never heard mine or any other amp do.. amazing, and I hope the reissues do the same
To me, This is your best video. Thank you
Thanks - glad you liked it.
Cool. Glad you found it useful.
@814mfg - Thanks, glad you dug it. Well, I'm old and I have hard for a long time to get to this point. But that said, I don't keep everything I demo. Some stuff I've had for years, but other items come and go to make more room for other stuff. I do love checking out lots of different stuff.
Thanks. Glad you dug it.
Cool. They gots good taste!
You are an awesome and versatile player. Thanks for all of your videos. Now I can actually hear the differences between all of these amps before i buy one. Are you a millionaire to afford all of these cool amps or did you buy them when they were cheap? Thanks again.
Beautiful -- thanks!
My pleasure.
You can use a simple Y jack to play out of both channels without worrying about the plug coming out of the stereo jack
That riff is from an old Lonnie Mack recording called Wham.
I want to build one based on the stereo input. Possible for stereo output aswell?
I play more rock, pop and r&b and in those contexts, certain sounds/settings are more useful than others.
that pitch modulating vibrato kinda reminds me of a Univibe
Ed Trybula - yeah, it does a bit. But if you want to hear a "vibrato" circuit that really sounds like a Univibe (actually, it's probably the other way around, LOL), check out the Fender "harmonic vibrato" found in amps like the brown Fender Super 6G4A. ruclips.net/video/q6aua7srQYE/видео.html
I was luck enough to find one. I hope you are still here! Does the reverb and tremolo only work on Channel 1? And I pushed the guitar cable into the stereo, but only the first channel worked. Is that because I don't have a "special" plug? Thanks!
Right. As I mention in this video (@ 4:40), the reverb and vibrato are only on the one channel. You need to either make a chord that's stereo on one end and mono on the other or be able to get your mono plug into that stereo jack just partway so that it makes contact with both sides of the stereo jack.. That may not be doable...Of course you could also get a Y cable and just plug into both channels simultaneously...that would work too.
@Leon C
Cant help noticing that my M8 is already drilled for another pair of power tubes. Why not build a second channel, asks me? Trick then would be to get out of 7189As as they so hard to find..Or is that not true? Last I presume power supply would run second channel, jacks and chan 2 vol pot could be devoted to this ? thanks best video of its kind
beautiful! when u say the tonality is more useful, do u mean that it's more versatile? in other words the same tones & additional tones?
Amp sounds real good !! Speaking of amps, Leon, can you recommend a really good local Marshall tech to hot rod up my 2001 Super Lead Mk II 100w. I need a master volume knob and whatever else to beef up sustain and chime at low volumes along with that Plexi signature crunch. Just asking, cause I don't know anyone.
Sounds great. What's the song you're playing at the start? Sounds familiar (ccr.?)
oops sorry wrong page leon. just out of curiosity: do yuo ever use any ABY pedals to play out of two different amps?
You really need to use GE brand 7189A tubes in these amps. None others work very well and only 7189 type tubes can take the kind of plate voltages used in these amps. You can find them, but they are expensive. Personally, I doubt if the PT on your amp puts out enough current to run more power tubes. I wouldn't mess with it. If you want a bigger Maggie, with stereo vibrato...just buy one; they are out there and do pop up for sale.
They can be converted to EL84 pretty easy. Just a matter for soldering the wires on the pins to different locations. I once had the formula. It's available online. Then just install some cheap Russian Military grade EL84 tubes and you are ready to go.
The black keys used this amp for el camino.
I have one; I lost the power chord(s). Can you help me figure out which one of the plugs on the back or better, yet, SHOW me what it looks like? Is the power chord for this amp a male or a female input, or whatever it is referred to. Yours sound awesome! I can't wait to get mine going ... please help if you can by messaging me a photo of the back, or the aforementioned plug, etc. This is the only amp I own.
Nah...for one, the clubs we play are rarely big enough for me to bring more than one smallish amp. While my ideal rig would probably have two or three amps in it...there's no way I would take the time and effort to drag all that around, set it up, tear it down, etc. If I had roadies...different story :)
Is there a special type of varistor needed to make the Magnatone vibrato circuit operate correctly? The schematics that I've seen just indicate the position of the varistors, but show no values...
Well the specs aren't written down on paper per se but yes, there are specific values that will work. The ones used on the Magnatones like this one (and earlier models) were made by Globar and are no longer produced. You can however buy them from people who sell them on eBay from time to time. The guy who has (had?) a bunch of them was the fellow behind Juke amps for many years.
Not sure what you mean "second amp"...? It's all the same amp, a Magnatone M10A.
how about the studio?
I'll see if I can't get you some kind of photo.
No, that's what multi-track recording is for.
whats that second amp you are playing
Thanks Leon !! I do not know Dave Friedman, can you provide any contact info?
Nice amp! B?}>>
This will be a bitch and a half...and very expensive.
