    People have a lot of questions about french drains. That pipe he put in isnt even necessary but most guys do put it in just to direct it more. Water flows very well through that stone and stone drains works excellent for years and years. Only thing I wouldve done differently is put fabric on top before putting dirt because dirt will clog up the stone over time. Not sure why he didnt, maybe because it was so shallow he thought itd get caught in a mower?

    Nice video Jesse. I thought the stone was a little jagged to use in that app, in that it might compact over time. But ya can't really tell on a video. If it keeps the driveway dry and keeps the yard from becoming a pond, then all is well.

    • @conormegan2824

    • @karaayers2867
      @karaayers2867 3 года назад +1

      Yep, the pipe can come solid, solid with holes, or perforated little slits.
      I like the slits with the silt sock. Let's water in, keeps the clay and roots out.

    For a French drain, don’t you have to put holes in the pipe facing down ?

    • @user-tv5dt3nm9y
      @user-tv5dt3nm9y 2 года назад

      No expert here, but I don’t think the hole direction matters in a freedom drain. Water will move to path of least resistance.

    There's a school of thought that placing gravel under the French Drain (instead of laying it out directly into the dirt and placing all the gravel over or along side the perforated drain pipe) allows some water to accumulate under the drainage pipe and stagnate, drawing in roots over time, etc. I don't know whether that potential situation would matter in this situation, but wonder whether in your experience that sort of scenario should be considered when planning a French Drain installation.

    • @jmuller86
      @jmuller86  3 года назад +1

      the roots would be coming in through the top and either way, the water level would remain the same. The gravel acts as a backup pipe, its actually not even needed when using that filter sock

    You have me wondering rather than a flat ditch that will hold water but move very little without some pitch why not dig a sump at the termination four or five feet deep and pitch your ditch down to its bottom? Then you have a movement of water and if the sump is big enough it can percolate the water away at a slower pace but keeping it out of the way. It can also be filled with a drain rock if an open pit is objectionable using the soil fabric to keep fines out. About anything is better than a flat ditch growing algae.

    • @jmuller86
      @jmuller86  3 года назад +1

      the water table is the level of that little pond so it would just fill up to that level. I had thought about that and it would work if that wasnt the water table level
