Learn to Play the Nimzowitsch Defense Kennedy Variation… CRUSHING the Linksspringer Variation!

- The Nimzowitsch Defense is one of the most underrated chess openings for black against e4. It gives a strong combination of chess opening theory, chess opening principles, and chess opening moves. Stockfish often likes the positions which come out of the Nimzowitsch Defense, and on top of all this, it is rare! This is important because if you play the Nimzowitsch Defense, you will have the advantage in terms of preparation. Every Nimzowitsch Defense game you play, you will gain more knowledge and understanding of the moves, tricks, traps, ideas, principles, theory, lines, and variations.
Your opponent, however, has probably not studied for the Nimzowitsch Defense much. E4 players have so many chess openings they need to study up on including the French Defense, Petrov's Defense, Pirc Defense, Scandinavian Defense, Caro-Kann Defense, Sicilian Defense, and more! Because of this, the e4 chess opening player doesn't often spend much time (if any at all) studying for the Nimzowitsch Defense. I only mention all this because I think it helps the Nimzowitsch Defense in it's effectiveness. Now, this is NOT one of those chess openings where we simply hope the opponent "messes up, and if they don't, well we are losing." This is a strong chess opening for black against e4 even if the opponent is familiar with it. However, it only becomes more effective when the e4 player doesn't have much of an understanding concerning the types of middlegame chess positions that can be reached. And this only helps us!
If you do play the Nimzowitsch Defense, you will run into the tough choice of playing either the Scandinavian Variation or Kennedy Variation, and on this chess channel we will cover both! But this video is dedicated to the Linksspringer Variation, which comes out of the Kennedy Variation from black.

In case you are looking for an interesting defense against 2.Nf3 you can look at d5, 3. exd5 Qxd5 4. Nc3 Qd6!!
This is a very nice Move trying to justify the early development of the Knight to C6, with the idea of castling Queenside as soon as possible and moving the Queen back to D8 if forced to by a move like Nb5
This is interesting but at that point just play the Qd6 Scandinavian which is better because black hasn’t committed to Nc6 and can play c6
Oh interesting thought... thanks for sharing this!!
I would like to say also, you are on firer in your teaching. I have had the hippo played against me about 15 times. So your utube aspect of pushing an opening is working. So continue what you are doing, you are a very wonderful teacher/instructor. Amazing . Thank you.
May Jesus bless you always. Amen
Thanks for the kind words David! Thanks for following the RUclips channel and supporting the content. Jesus bless you as well!
Thanks for this instructive video! Will you make a video on the Colorado Countergambit against 2.Nf3? Because that's a big killjoy of the Nimzowitsch.
This would be a fun chess opening video! Thanks for sharing this idea. I'd like to make a chess opening video on this eventually.
Ok i didn't know this thing was called Nimzowitsch defense i though it was only with e6, Bb5. So it was really interesting the lines are very sharp i'll no doubt take fun and points with this and can add to my repertoire with black against e4 to change of boring caro kann. Thank you for you work sir
That's the nimzo indian, there's also the nimzo larsen attack with 1.b3. Lots of nimzos 🤣
@@Gooodmorningdog thats true 😅 man definitely marks his game
Ah right right! Ya that is the Nimzo-Indian Defense, as @Emperorbydecember shared, there are so many Nimzos in the game of chess lol.
And glad you liked the video brotha.
It used to be in my repertoire but it was named black knight tango. Miodrag Perunovic also shows some agressive lines on this opening.
Ah for sure! The Black Knights' Tango is against 1. d4 no?
Although I guess you could also reach this with 1. d4 Nc6 2. e4 e5
My favorite defense. Thanks a lot, Solomon!
what do you play vs 2.Nf3?
@@simontscharf9613 I play the Colorado Gambit
@@alvarobastida1963 it looks definitely interesting thanks for the idea !
You're very welcome Alvaro! I'm glad you liked it - and just to let you know I sometimes have "the sub" that comes to mind when making content on a certain chess opening. When I think of a sub who likes the Nimzowitsch Defense - you are the one!
I gotta make a video on this soon! Looks fun.
Great stuff, thanks!
Thanks, and you got it!
Thanks for a black pieces video, I can't seem to really find a black opening I'm conformable with, I'll try this one for a while.
You got it brotha, and let me know what you think of it! Other (more rare) chess openings I'd recommend looking into are the Hippopotamus Defense, St. George Defense, Scandinavian Defense, and Owen's Defense!
Just waiting in the premier
YERR 🙏🏽🗣😤
Excellent 👍👍👍
What to do after
1. e4 Nc6 2. d4 e5 3. d5 Nce7 4. Be3 Ng6 5. a3
One sample line might go
... Nf6 6. Nc3 Be7 7. f3 d6 8. Qd2 O-O 9. h4 h5 10. Nge2
And I think white is doing much better here.
Ya interesting line! I plugged it into stockfish and once you reach this point it is about +0.4 for white. It says Bd7 is solid for black followed by a move like c6 or c5 or even b5. (ALSO, instead of 4. ...Ng6 apparantly 4. ...d6 is an option followed by moves like c6 and/or f5 with near equality for black). Idk what do you think?
Some possible lines:
1. e4 Nc6 2. d4 e5 3. d5 Nce7 4. Be3 f5 5. Nc3 d6 6. f3 Nf6 7. Qd2
1. e4 Nc6 2. d4 e5 3. d5 Nce7 4. Be3 d6 5. Nc3 c6 6. dxc6 bxc6 7. Bc4
White has the advantage, but these look a little better than after
1. e4 Nc6 2. d4 e5 3. d5 Nce7 4. Be3 Ng6 5. a3
Crazy...I beat 1700 and 1900 with this. Granted it was an unrated game but still. Thank you. I am playing Ponziani after watching your other video. That is crazy good 👍
Nice!! CONGRATS that's awesome, keep getting better!
hey Solomon i have a question to keep the same plan of manoeuvering the b8 knight to g6 but when the opponent is playing like normal scotch game, bc im not an e5 player and when we enter in this i lost all these plans and play a solid game trying to not lose but not really appreciated you know
Ya it's pretty hard to play this manuever if you are seeing a normal game from white. Part of what makes the Nc6/Ne7/Ng6 idea so good is that white pushed their pawn to d5. This does 3 things in our favor.
1. White has spent precious time pushing a central pawn twice.
2. The a2 to g8 diagonal is now blocked, so Bc4 looks silly.
3. c5 is now a GREAT square for our dark-squared bishop to go to.
So with all this in mind, I probably wouldn't usually do this manuever against something like the Scotch Game for the reasons mentioned.
What to do against 2.Nf3
I use this now, but lately they play c4 to protect the d pawn. Cramps the board for me. what is the best responc.e
Hey David! I would recommend just continuing with our normal game plan! Ng6/Nf6/Bc5 (or Bb4, really whatever they give us), d6, 0-0 etc. (also the moves I showed were not in order necessarily but just the moves we are looking for.
c4 might look scary but it is going to be hard for white to push that pawn any further as we have solid control of the dark-squares, so I think we are okay there.
Hope this helps!
Thanks,
Solomon
thank you
you are awesome
Same to you David!
2.Nf3 is the reason I don’t play this opening
Try the Colorado Gambit! A lot of fun!
@@alvarobastida1963 no thank you lol
@@alvarobastida1963 there’s also the problem that white can force the scotch in the other line. 1.e4 Nc6 2.d4 e5 3.Nf3
Ya that's fair - white will often avoid black's prep by playing Nf3, I myself am one of them 2. Nf3 guys 😂🙏🏽
Lol too scared to play the Nimzo. But looks pretty easy to get a good position pretty fast in the most popular line.
Ya it's an opening which might look scary, although in all honesty (at least to me) the Kennedy Variation is much easier (less scary) to play than 2. ...d5
I have very good score against Nimzowitsch defence
What is your approach against the Nimzowitsch Defense? Do you play 2. d4?
@@TheChessGiant No, I play 2.Nf3
