I was considering medical school back in the late 2000s (when paper charts were a thing) and a couple of doctors were honest with me about the process and life after med school and residency. One of them literally said "if youre good at anything else- do that instead." I opted for a different path and am SO happy I didnt end up as a physician. I appreciate you being transparent so people can make more informed choices.

Thank you for being transparent! It’s refreshing to hear an MD say that they don’t know if the path is truly worth it. I think some of us lie to ourselves to believe the path has to be worth it because we’ve devoted many hours and a lot of money for this training. Medicine requires so much and forces you to sacrifice a lot when there is so much more to life than medicine. The moment we realize that we only have this life so we better start living and enjoying it, I think a lot might even reconsider the profession…..including myself, a U.S. medical student. Anyways, thank you for sharing this and being honest on your platform. Congratulations on finishing residency 🎉

I never know how much it would take away from me! I think we get so caught up in the thought of becoming a doctor but its so important to realize how much sacrifice it requires. wish you all the best!!

I appreciate that you mentioned soap week. I put 100% into the match and I didn't match. At the moment, SOAP week felt like one of the worst weeks of my life. Things ended up being ok even tho I didn't land where I envisioned myself. Looking back, there's genuinely so much to be grateful for in the grand scheme of things. We are in a field where we can go to any part of the world and still be needed. There are not a lot of jobs that offer an ability to heal. To look at a stranger in the eye, shake their hand, and offer clarity or hope, even if it's just here and there. Even if you don't heal a single person, the mere intention to heal and the act of visiting the sick is huge and I pray Allah rewards us for it.

Thank you so much for your honesty! I never knew that I could be a doctor and now after graduating with my undergrad in CompSci I feel so behind for not just going for it from jump. Now I am stuck in limbo on whether or not I should go back.

In malaysia, all medical graduates (MBBS/MD) will granted a place for housemanship training (similar to residency). But its a 2 year training consisting all posting (obgyn, im, surgery, etc) if u passed all assessments then u get ur full license to practice.. then u need to undergo another training (4-8years) based on ur specialty of interest.. and the quota is very2 limited… some takes parallel pathway like mrcp
Btw i watch ur vids since highschool and now im halfway in medical school

alternate paths in medicine or semi in medicine that you may recommend that are not so strenuous, but can still make an impact and make good money?

That is so trash! You finished a 4 year postgrad degree worth hundreds of thousands of dollars and you're not even guaranteed a job as a doctor😮
In Australia, you're guaranteed an internship for a 1 year pretty much and then you can easily apply and get a job for the following years. The hard part is getting onto a training program. But u actually have to work generally for a few years on rotations till you get onto a program.

crazy right?! I think I am "guaranteed" a job since we're in such high demand but its not easily set up for you and you have to search for it on your own
