My mother was born in Nothe-Dame-De-Batiscan, a small mining village north of Shawinigan and some of what I remember in the 40's looks like this film, specially the religious fervor. I spent years in a residential school run by Catholic nuns for which I am forever grateful for making me the happy no-nonsense atheist that I am today.
WOW!!! So beautiful. Thanks for digitalizing/sharing this fantastic piece. I recently moved here (into a 220 year old house) and am enthralled with learning the history of Quebec and the people. But even more so concerning my city, Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, where the beautiful Sainte Anne Basilica stands.
Very interesting places I read about when a child in school in Quebec catholic school . Later I was told the berube family was on of the first families to populate Quebec Damian berube a brick layer , still looking for more info and found this film .
I am a direct descendant of Damian Berube. He was not only a brick layer, he built the first windmill in the new world called the Escadrille. It is rumored that we are part Icelandic. I would believe it!
@@jerrimenard3092 the family was living Bathurst until they moved to Montreal my father had the least amount of kids of the family before that no less than 10 kids on my grand Andre berube I have the family tree some where around the house I think we were 13th generation till we get to Normandy where the family moved from England as missionary’s and went to France .
I’m probably being too sensitive but as an English Quebecois born in 1961 I Montreal General Hospital. And still living here. I was embarrassed as an anglophone at the text with the ‘faux’ accent Quebecois (e).
Otherwise a real slice of history. I grew up near Village Pointe Claire. And at onetime it would have looked like that country village. Vraiement beaux.
@@johngore7744 I think the faux French-Canadian accent is a quotation from the author of "Little Baptiste". What's his name? I think he was an Irish doctor who loved French Canada. He's paying homage to those French-Canadians who spoke English like that. He's not mocking them. He's celebrating them. The same way various writers in Newfoundland and Labrador celebrated the way Newfoundlanders speak English i.e. Ray Guy or Dr George Story.

And the Bill 21 first target and the reason of his existence come from our love and hate with the Catholic religion. Which the mainstream media across Canada a.K.a Toronto Star etc, try their best to link the Bill 21 and Islamophobia. Which is revolting.

The Lemieux house at 8:03 was built for my 8th Great Grandfather, Jean Demers in 1689... Joe Lemieux was also an ancestor of mine.
