    Eee I raised a pair of degus named Scotch and Whiskey for years, and they were some of the best pets I've had. Very affectionate critters and very talkative.
    Whiskey passed away at the ripe old age of 8, and Scotch became good friends with my rabbit for the last 2 years of his life. I'll always endorse degus as a first for people wanting to start caring for rodents.

  • @gruvee9334
    @gruvee9334 3 года назад +8

    Hmm. I've had several gerbils over the last three decades. They can live up to 4 or even 5 years. But you really have to give them good food and love. :) Lots of the latter, and care, as they are extremely accident prone the moment you turn your back.
    He is right though. It does hurt a LOT when you lose them. Rats are very cuddly and cute actually, but they live a mere 3 years. They will leave a big hole in your kokoro when they go.

    • @MKF30
      @MKF30 3 года назад +2

      I've had gerbils, a rat and mice. I have to admit the gerbils were the best. The mice smelled bad lol and the rat did at times too. My rat wasn't that social he always seems depressed, id take him put and he's just sit there. He loved to eat though sadly he never ate anything healthy like fruits and veggies or grains. He'd only eat bad human food lol pizza, burgers, bacon, chocolate, cheese doodles, steak etc then died one night trying to climb on top of a kleenex box did a back flip and started to twitch then died. After a year...
      The mice lived about a year and a half. One killed the other, then that one died a few months after.
      Both were less social than my gerbils they'd jump and headbutt the screen. Very smart they knew the way out. And ive had a few our od like 30 I had that knew to balance themselves on the edge of the tank. One could walk on it like a squirr on phone lines. He'd jump on there perfectly, climb all over my father but not me. Others I played with knew me better. That gerbil the one who bonded well with my dad was super gerbil aside from doing that and knowing the way out lol he was the only gerbil an animal in general ive had or seen to chew theu the metal holder of water bottles....the others would chew but to no avail lol. Not a mark on it. Him though must have had strong teeth because he literally chewed thru the damn thing. Lol he broke it because he went through the part that supports the bottle nossel 😳😲
      Had to buy 3 of them in his lifetime lol thankfully I gave him an extra wood block which he also chewed. He never but outside of a nibble. I didnhave one evil one though his son well one of them lol. He bit everyone who touched him lol and even killed his own father and siblings. He was a very aggressive gerbil. Other than him most of them were good lol. The oldest gerbil had was one of his sons, smoke. He lived riln4 and half years sadly my dad accidentally stepped on him. We had a blackout and he escaped....we lived in a much smaller place at the time. My father was walking slowly in the dark and smoke got out, that was old for a gerbil of course he moved way slower by that point. Not sure how old 4 years is for a gerbil in human years.
      These degus remind me of gerbils in many ways and kind of look like a hybrid of a gerbil mixed with a hamster and a mouse lol

    • @gruvee9334
      @gruvee9334 3 года назад +1

      @@MKF30 Interesting stories. Indeed, some gerbies can be quite aggressive. Luckily, not all of them are that vicious.
      I always thought of gerbil years being x20 that of human years. So if they live some 4 years, it would be like they were 80 in human years.
      Indeed, degus look like a combination of all of them. And seem just as witty and industrious.
      So sorry for Smoke. I always walk sliding my feet on the floor when I am unsure if my gerbil(s) is in the cage. They are extreme escape artists and can be quite the danger for themselves, sadly.
      Yet, they're great pals and listeners, though they are very individual in personalities.

    • @MKF30
      @MKF30 3 года назад +1

      @@gruvee9334 Yeah for sure like people and most animals they all have their own personalities for sure. Usually if you feed them and let them smell your scent they tend to be more friendly once you've gained their trust.
      I never saw a degu where I live in NYC, I guess they're only sold in certain countries or parts? Yesh they're very social the gerbils so there's that, curious ive noticed haha thsts true I've made aure to put a little book as a weight on the door latch after he escaped to keep the others in when its not play time. I searched they know where the door is lol. Ive seen them headbutt it like when they move the blocks around with their heads while they dig. They also seemed deathly afraid of the vacuum noise lol they'd go running around moving very sharply stomping their feet. 🤣
      Yep good guess haha probably around 80 for sure at that age. He also moved slower as I recall too. I used to bury them in my backyard when I was a kid. I know sounds silly.

    • @gruvee9334
      @gruvee9334 3 года назад +1

      @@MKF30 That's ok. Though one will want to put them at a long-lasting resting place. Never know if another dog or so might dig them up.
      Yeah, Gerbils are very sensitive to noise. I recall mine even reacting to the first generation of cellphone cameras. Could never film them while they were snoozing. One always freaked-out and, yeah, did stomping as well.
      Yeah, Degus are certainly harder to find. I hear too that in general, Gerbils and Degus are forbidden in certain States, due to the fear of people losing them and them wrecking havoc on crops. Hope you can adopt some more in the future somehow :).

    • @MKF30
      @MKF30 3 года назад

      @@gruvee9334 Oh thankfully I have since moved from I heard from that place about 5 years ago now and that was like over 25 years now so it's already decomposed and enriched the earth I'm sure, besides heard from my neighbors there that they decided to dig out the grass from both sides of the yard and replace it all with concrete so at least there won't be any chance of any animals digging them out if there were some sort of remains.
      Oh yeah? Yeah I've noticed their little noses they like to smell everything(I guess like most animals lol) so naturally I guess they can easily tell if their human handles them or a stranger they don't know. Once I was feeding them some lettuce and corn, they loved that but pumpkin seeds were the favorite. One time I tried a small piece of lemon but must have been to strong for them lol, a few bit it and another smelled it and started jumping up and down a few minutes, shaking his little head. I guess the tartness was a bit much. But one was slowly nibbing at it haha. Oh wow didn't know they can be sensitive to a camera phone that's interesting. lol
      Oh that's interesting, never heard of gerbils being illegal here in the states, dengus and ferrests yes though but to my knowledge as of now I don't believe Gerbils are, at least in most if they are illegal in any specific state. Here in NYC ferrets have been illegal for years then they changed that about 10-15 years something like that ago, then changed it back lol. But gerbils have always been fine and in most states you can't have a squirrel, but people down south countryside have them or adopt them or domesticate them same with racoons believe it or not haha.

    Degus really are amazing pets, but are not for begginers and also is not so simple to care for any pet, they need time, atention, good quality food, hay, a large enought cage, a lot of toys and accesories to climb and chew on, periodical visits and check by a exotic vet, not evey vet knows how to treat or check them, are not so easy to acomodate with human interaction byt when they do and you manage to take good care of them they are really spacial and smart animals, they cost you a lot of money for all their needs and a lot of time and atention thou. And also is not good to encourage people in any way to breed them at home, you need to know a lot about genetics and disses and also have a good vet near by open 24/7 in case anything go wrong with giving labor or with the puppies
