"가즌회상"이란 "현악영산회상(絃樂靈山會上)"에 '도드리'와 "천년만세(千年萬歲)"를 함께 연주하는 곡으로 거문고 ‧ 가야금 ‧ 피리 ‧ 대금 ‧ 해금 ‧ 단소 ‧ 양금 ‧ 장고 등의 악기들이 단잽이로 연주하는 세악 편성의 모음곡이다. 즉 "현악영산회상"의 '상령산(上靈山)' ‧ '중령산(中靈山)' ‧ '세령산(細靈山)' ‧ '가락덜이(加樂除只)' ‧ '상현도드리(上絃還入)' ‧ '하현도드리(下絃還入)' ‧ '염불도드리(念佛還入)' ‧ '타령(打鈴)' ‧ '군악(軍樂)'과 '도드리'를 '상현도드리'와 '하현도드리' 사이에 삽입하고, 끝에 "천년만세"라고 하는 세 악곡, 즉 '계면가락도드리(界面還入)' ‧ '양청도드리(兩淸還入)' ‧ '우조가락도드리(羽調還入)'를 덧붙여서 연속으로 연주하는 것이다. 그러므로 "가즌회상"이란 모든 곡을 구비하여 연주하는 "영산회상(靈山會上)"을 뜻한다. "영산회상(靈山會上)"이란 곡명은 본래 ‘영산회상불보살(靈山會上佛菩薩)’이라는 일곱 자의 가사를 붙여 노래하던 옛 악곡에서 유래되었으나, 오늘날에는 그 가사가 없어지고 기악곡으로만 전해진다.
"Gajeunhoesang" is a musical suite that is a combination of the following three sets of music: nine pieces of "Hyeonak Yeongsan Hoesang" and three pieces of "Cheonnyeonmanse" which are connected by 'Dodeuri'. The nine pieces of "Hyeonak Yeongsanhoesang" are played by a small chamber ensemble including instruments like gayageum, daegeum, haegeum, piri, danso, yanggeum, janggo along with geomungo, which leads the main melody. "Yeongsanhoesang" is derived from an old seven-letter lyric song 'Yeong san hoe sang bul bo sal', whose words unfortunately are now forgotten but the melody still remains.
1. '상령산' 'Sangnyeongsan'
"영산회상(靈山會上)"은 첫 곡 ‘상령산(上靈山)’에서 발전하였다. ‘상령산’은 1장단이 20박으로 되어 있다. 또한 전체악곡의 길이는 오늘날 17장단으로 되어, 고악보를 비교하여 보면 14장단까지는 사설 한 글자가 2장단에 해당되고 나머지 3장단은 나중에 늘어난 것임을 알 수 있다. 즉 오늘날의 ‘상령산’은 가사가 탈락된 유장한 기악곡이 되었고, 그 기악선율의 반복구에 의하여 구분된 전체 4장 17장단의 악곡으로 전해진다.
"Yeongsanhoesang" is an expansion work and development from its first piece, 'Sangnyeongsan'. Its rhythmic pattern (jangdan) used to be a slow 10-beat form. However, in the more contemporary times, a slower 20-beat became more common which is believed to have been adopted from the 10-beat structure by writing down the notes on different rhythmic score. The old score shows the piece with a form of 14 phrases (two phrases for each letter) but as the more contemporary one has 17, it is assumed that three phrases were annexed later. Since the original liyrics have been lost, 'Sangnyeongsan' became an instrumental piece and has been passed down as a 17-phrase suite consisting of 4 movements.
