      It’s because as an Ideal it’s great. Who doesn’t like building more stuff.
      But when it comes down to it, it requires taxes to pay for it. And politicians care more about their careers than the wellbeing of this country. Immediate blowback “my constituents refuse to pay/pay enough in taxes,” is seen as more persuasive than the realization that our infrastructure is failing and that WE NEED to fix it. Fixing it requires paying for it. Tough that you don’t like taxes, no one does. But if that’s what it takes, then that’s what it takes.

    The one thing this video did not mention is where the money will come from. When the interstate system was built in the 1950s, the highest tax rate in America was 70%. Today, many large corporations pay no tax, real wages have declined which means a shrinking tax base, our presidents keep giving their rich cronies one trillion-dollar tax cut after another and our national debt is as large as our entire economy. Infrastructure is not a business. It will not finance itself (just like the military). The last international airport built in the US was Denver International in 1994. This isn't rocket science. If we want to repair our infrastructure then we need to find ways to pay for it even if that means rolling back some of those tax cuts and closing some tax loopholes.

    Taming the rivers was a mistake that started a 100 years ago. Channeling the rivers with walls and levees is a mistake. Large rivers have natural flood plains, look at the Mississippi River and it's obvious and for comparison look at other major waterways across the globe, such as the Amazon or the Nile where the river is able to "shed" its over flow on the banks, creating vázeas and the equivalent in Egypt. There are a whole ecosystems which collapsed with putting up levees and the people that live right next to them know this. But real state dictates otherwise.

    • @TM-qz8mg
      @TM-qz8mg 8 лет назад

      I heard that the same was done for branches of major rivers, almost like making linear water highways so that cargo could get faster to the sea. The results are bad overtime, and it seems like a pen in the hand of an elected authority would be very useful there. because all it would take is to move those towns to a new land away from the danger. But somehow nothing of true benefit for the population happens, and the legal process is lengthy, so people walk away and become street beggars or relocate to sewer systems as living quarters, and reproduction areas, or go to the woods.

    • @Croz89
      @Croz89 8 лет назад +3

      Problem is, flood plains are very attractive to build on, nice and flat so not much landscaping needed, and no steep slopes to prevent access from highways and railways. Plus in years past the river would also be an important transportation feature, it was how you moved freight and passengers before highways and railways. A village on a hill is isolated, expensive to construct and hard to connect. A village in a valley is cheap to build and easy to connect to other villages.

      I guess you guys just need to do some maintenance... actually we need to do it in Europe also.
      In America they like to over dramatize things because many people haven’t been out of their huge country. So it’s easy to make people feel left behind.
      It’s the same like some Americans believe that China is very rich country...
      Well, I live in China and this place have its issues... the biggest one is total poverty where millions have no access to electricity and running water...
      it’s easy to build random railways and empty cities under authoritarian regime.
      In democracy, politicians have to explain why those things are actually built. Sometimes those railways are not very useful. Though those look good on the video. The same thing with some super high show off skyscrapers that look good on the photos... the fact is that the same country might have problem with drinking water and hunger...
      Long story short... don’t believe the things they say if they compare you with the rest of the world...

Just recently they fixed up a pretty big parking lot which had a few cracks and was filled with bird shit thanks to the homeless who kept throwing food there. They fixed the parking lot up but that didn't change how the people still handled the road. Bird shit was there, food and trash would be on the ground, and shopping carts were everywhere. Every major city in America should have a large and reliable public transportation system that includes a reliable commuter rail, light rail, and/or metro rail system. It increases property value and makes the city accessible to anyone without forcing the need for a car. The ideal city should have enough dense, mixed use, walkable neighborhoods and public transportation infrastructure in place that you shouldn't need a car. An overabundance of freeways is objectively terrible urban planning. What we're left with is cities that have been built for the car, but not for people.

It would keep the REP happy with a high budget for the army, get the DEM happy with an actual "use" to the army which would not be sensless war and a great initiative for the army to ease troop transport incase of invasion or attack. To me the large amount of budget that is slowly being outdated set for the army would be justified by these repaires. Private contractors could work hand in hand with the army, civil and engenire corp, archotechs , city planners, soldier all working to make the infrastructure better. It would also help the army get a better image. The savoirs of the infrastructure. Just an idea.

    The most important thing about the congestion is forgotten in this video and isn’t seen by your politicians either. The biggest problem you have is the layout of your cities, because it is that spread out with big suburbs with big houses and lawns, that it isn’t possible for public transport to get everywhere and people have to take the car. This leads to overuse of cars and thus too many on the road. That’s the base of why there is so much congestion.

  • @tijojose7966
    @tijojose7966 8 лет назад +23

    The fastest, cheaper, and best solution is to privatize and deregulate roads, bridges, airports, etc. These problems are caused by incompetent/corrupt politicians. It's absurd to think that another incompetent/corrupt politician can fix those problems.

    • @tijojose7966
      @tijojose7966 8 лет назад +10

      I live in Chicago. Labor Unions control the construction of roads. They intentionally use defective concrete. In winter, water pours into cracks and freezes. The freezing water expands the cracks until we get major potholes and other problems. Labor Unions do this because defective concrete insures that they will always have construction jobs in the future. If we let the free market take over, this wouldn't be problem, because of competition. Near my old high school, a quarter mile strip of Potter Road took 3 years to repair. Many people needed that road to get to school (we didn't have school busses). The construction cut off the road and backed up traffic for miles. Meanwhile, Lutheran General Hospital (which is adjacent to Maine East High School) built a brand new 20 story wing within a few months. It's a perfect example of private construction vs government construction. The BI video also (barely) explained the problems with airport regulations.

    • @Croz89
      @Croz89 8 лет назад +9

      That's not a problem with unions, that is bad oversight. The same could happen with a private company cutting corners or trying to milk a lucrative contract.

    • @tijojose7966
      @tijojose7966 8 лет назад +5

      +Ralphie Raccoon Labor unions don't want oversight. Google "open secrets top organization contributors" and search for contributions for all election cycles (not just 2016). You'll find that 8 of the top 9 political contributions are from labor unions. Labor unions make money from government contracts and use a portion of the profits to lobby for even more government contracts. Labor unions control the Chicago construction industry. They intentionally use defective concrete and lobby to keep that policy in place. But you are right, the same can happen with businesses taking short cuts. Military corporations are notorious for it. My point is that this lack of oversight would not occur in a free market. If you privatized infrastructure, competition would force oversight.

    • @Croz89

    I live in Kalamazoo, MI and I went to Chicago over the summer via Amtrak. Directly after leaving the station on the way back, the train sat at a standstill for an hour because of freight traffic.

    I live in the UK and our city centres are dying from a lack of investment. Old brick and motor retail buildings sit empty and in need of repair as people head to out of town to shiny new metel box stores on the out skirts. Except in my city of Sheffield. Our city centre is under going huge investment that's completely changing the map of the city centre thanks to investment from Chinese firms who have good connections to the city thanks the the huge numbers of Chinese students studying at our two university's. I know people are funny about China but they really have made a big improvement to my city

    48 hours to move rail between LA and Chicago? I work in logistics and when we use intermodal it takes at least a week for it to go from either coast to Chicago. Are they talking about just the time that the train is physically moving without taking into account all the stops and delays along the way?

      The guy who made this gets a lot wrong because he’s desperately trying to blame Trump for increasing the debt over the last three years without improving the infrastructure.

      @@matthew8153 This video is from before Trump was elected. But I think you're generally right about his motivations.

    Lol I work for Union Pacific as a conductor. Railroads are their own worst enemy. PSR doesn’t help a thing and neither do 3 mile long 20+k ton trains.

    As a Facility Maintenance Technician, I can tell you that people are eager to build and develop, but they never consider maintenance. Compound these issues with the fact that most people don't want to do blue collar work these days, it's easy to see the conundrum our country is in.

    Building new grand projects is much more glamorous than maintaining and repairing old infrastructure.

    It really hit me when she said that she hopes the millenial generation will take this on and starts imagining the way things could be and PUSH!

    I don't know why the country which was my dream place during my childhood is suffering from such a pathetic conditions.
