Couldn't agree more to all your points, I had a feeling this monitor would exist at some point, but the fact it's come to life and is that cheap, really makes this a no brainer if you were on the fence about this camera.
At IBC2024 BlackMagic said the cable is non-proprietary (as expected). It just needs to be able to do both data, power and carry the DisplayPort out protocol. Similar to the USB-C cable Canon is using on the C400. The cable can be up to 5 meters so the example you mentioned of a 10-15ft cable for jibs or something else definitely works.
The next version of the Pyxis should leave off the attached fixed side monitor and have that area open for manual buttons and add in the detachable monitor as the stock monitor. This would be an FX6 competitor for sure!
File sizes are pretty similar. Sometimes, I just prefer the BM image over the KX. I also might start using the KX in more specialized uses like hard mounting or black arm stuff
I already commented on YT and told everyone months ago that Blackmagic was working on Pyxis control monitor and no one listened. The side monitor was never a side monitor it was always a menu/setup screen.
Interesting, I noticed a huge quality jump from a BM pocket 6k to the Komodo (tested side by side). Isn’t this new BM cam the same sensor as the FF pocket 6k??
Yes it’s the same sensor. Definitely a step up from OG Komodo but for interviews and KX (all I’ve done side by side)….not a massive difference other than some colors which is really easy to manipulate
I’m curious about the power draw as well. Core SWX makes a 98Wh battery that has dtap and stuff on it which will be a great option. Rigging it out with vmount/vmount will probably be the move though
I get full frame is all the hype, but the biggest thing keeping me from getting a pyxis is that it doesnt have the pocket 6k s35 sensor or even the ursa 4.6k or s35 12k sensor. I love the design but still prefer s35 in large part due to the lenses i own. Also the pocket 6k sensor does an amazing job matching my arri amira in controlled lighting. The ff 6k has been a bit trickier.
Having owned cameras with all those sensors (except 12k but was sooo close to buying one lol), the 6K FF sensor is my favorite and you can still do a s35 mode. 4:3 mode on 6K FF is one of my favorite modes actually
@@TylerEdwards oh the 12K is so underrated. The ff6k is the only blackmagic camera sensor I haven't owned (I guess if I don't include the lumix s5) but the work I did do with it I didn't love. The super 35 crop is totally usable but when put next to the native 6k s35 sensor it's just not the right investment for me. My opinion will probably change if I made myself shoot full frame more often but at this point all the cameras are so good that it's really just splitting hairs. Though I'm super interested in the ursa cine and that could change my outlook on all of this
@@nickxcI would say, after owning a pocket 6k pro, I would go for the 6k ff. I had the internal NDs freeze up on two 6kPro bodies and the 6k ff has better rolling shutter when cropped to s35
@@AdamLangdon oh interesting. That's good to know. I've never had a problem with the pros NDs in the past but those were all rentals. I was literally about to upgrade all our pocket 6ks to the pros this week but I'll have to look more into the nd issue. As for rolling shutter, that's not much of an issue in our workflow. The pockets are our go to for 4 camera and up interviews. Not a lot of fast motion there. I've just found them that much easier to match with our Arris over the ff. Additionally all my work horse lenses are s35.
@@TylerEdwards The camera is objectively only good in niche scenarios, and even in those scenarios 99% of the time you'd want to rent a camera package or use something else to begin with. 98% of the time people are better off buying an S5iix or fx3.. @@timekeepermedia5142 Kinda agree and disagree. 6K FF / PYXIS is great if you want maximum image quality and don't care about IBIS / AF and you are on a budget. Why the need to use BM for a/b cam setups and leaving the x to be more specialized? Is it file size? Client budget?

You can probably dim the side monitor all the way down or put v mount adapter which I’m sure they’ll make
