- Rule 11 is one of football's shortest rule, but also one if its most misunderstood.
In the early days of the sport, it became common for players players to "goal hang" - where players would just hang around their opponents goal and wait for a long ball to pick up an easy 1v1 against the keeper. This wasn't very entertaining, nor athletic, so the rule was first introduced in 1863.

What if the player with the ball passes to the dude on the right wing while left wing is closer to the goal is that offside ?
You forgot to mention one very important detail -- the offside can happen only at the moment of the pass, and not at the moment of receiving the pass. It means that if you stay behind the 2nd last defender and your teammate makes the pass ahead of you both and then you run ahead of the 2nd last defender and receive the ball, the offside won't be called even though you will find yourself catching the ball in front of the 2nd last defender. You won't be penalized for the offside because at the moment of the pass you were located behind the defender.

@@LifeOnPaul also a common misconception is that the goalkeeper may be in front of a defender and the goalkeeper becomes the second to last PLAYER as he counts as a player too. Many people who know football from a long time have trouble with this rule when its a live game, trust me.

You also forgot to mention that if the opponent accidentally passes the ball to the player on the opposite team who is in an offside position, it is not offside as the pass came from the opponent

kiran murali I’m pretty sure that offsides can’t be called unless the pass came from an attacking playing to an attacking player, if the defender touches it even in an attempt to stop it or if they deflect it and it goes to an attacking player behind the last defender, I’m pretty sure it’s no longer offsides because the defender touched it. Don’t quote me on that though
They also forgot to mention that receiving the ball in an offsides position is not necessarily offsides. You’re only offsides if you were offsides when the ball was kicked to you.

This is not actually the referees job. There are 2 linesmen, one for each side, running up and down with the play. Its their job to spot offside.

One key element that will make it easier for people to understand offside, is that it is there to prevent any attacking player from camping (or literally just standing still) next to the opposing goalkeeper or the goalposts, just waiting for the ball to be lobbed to him (the attacking player).

Thanks, the new FIFA game was on the PS+ free game, and while I never really understood/got into soccer (the other football has always been my sport of choice), I’ve always had something of a passive interest, so I figured why not grab the free game. I probably got called on this half a dozen times in the first match. I’d say they should probably cover it in the tutorial, but I guess they were counting on people new to FIFA, not new to soccer entirely.
