Zappa was a fan, said so in an interview when he came to Montreal back in 74 on the Apostrophe tour, and dared the DJ to play some good stuff for once, "like Gentle Giant".
This is the way Gentle Giant reactions are supposed to go. Two people who dont just like music, but KNOW music, hearing all the nuance and genius. Be warned, they can sound bewilderingly different from song to song. But when they hit, they demolish.
Finally Gentle Giant another Prog Rock Great!!! You guys are really going down the rabbit hole! Have a great journey guys way to start a great weekend!!
So glad you guys dig them . All instruments played by the band , man !! To blow your minds , please watch and listen to ‘ Funny Ways ‘ from the BBC Live Sight and Sound concert from 1978 and you will understand Black Cat even more 👍👏
I saw these guys live back in 1976, they were the bottom act of a 3 act bill, (Gary Wright played after them and Peter Frampton was the headliner) and I was very impressed by their performance (at one point all 5 members of the band were playing drums/percussion in a wild solo that was pretty cool!) It seemed like a lot of the audience that night was there specifically to see them and the band put on great show!
WOW!! First time hearing this. Thanks for getting me to move out from under that rock I was residing under until I started watching your channel 😂😂 Appreciate you !!
Wikipedia: Gentle Giant were a British progressive rock band active between 1970 and 1980. The core of what was to become Gentle Giant comprised three brothers: Phil Shulman (born 1937), Derek Shulman (born 1947) and Ray Shulman (1949-2023).
It's worth noting that there is a fair bit of humor in their material (and a lot of other progressive bands). Take the cover of this album, for instance. GG was one of those truly one-of-a-kind bands - just a crazy amount of musicianship. Everyone in the band played multiple instruments - for instance, just off the top of my head, the keyboardist played keys, vibes/xylophone, cello, recorder, drums... and was *great* at all of them! If you want a shorter live video to see them in action, "Gentle Giant - On Reflection 1978 BBC [HQ]" is a good option, although the drummer plays xylophone on this one, and everyone else doubles on a variety of other instruments. Such a crazy, unique, and playful band.
I got it to them last yr. A very enjoyable ride. I've made it a point to stop playing my comfort zone playlists and explore. There's so much. I discovered Camel and Caravan too from the same era. Fantastic stuff.
Nice gentlemen! Saw the Giant 4 times in the 70s in Toronto. They are brilliant live. Bass player on the violin and the keyboard player on the cello. On Reflection is a great intro to the live brilliance of the Giant. Enjoy the GG journey ✨️🎶✨️
They could do this stuff live! At the beginning of punk rock, all the early punks were into GG...plenty more great Gentle Giant songs, but this was a great pick.
One of the funkiest songs in the history of recorded music is this live version of Gentle Giant's 'Free Hand': ruclips.net/video/vMrYSTzqFI8/видео.htmlsi=Dd_17INQrRN9CyKX. Bassist (along with plauer of violin, acoustic guitar, trumpet, recorder, and assorted percussion) was a wizard at his art.
Great job guys I remember these guys from back in the day. So far your tje only one's that did a reaction to them keep it going. You need to explore more.I 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Gentle Giant are a great band. You should check "Gentle Giant - Experience - Live in Long Beach" (HD remaster on BrunoSampa's RUclips page} to see them live. Gets a standing ovation from the audience too!
LOL Not sure who requested this one,but it definately IS one of their quirkiest tunes! British prog rock act from the 70's,guys. THeir music was very challenging, but most times still VERY melodic (aka..not THIS weird). If you can handle this one, then you should deep dive them. You WILL be amazed! T
Yes, and Genesis are my Prog favorites, but I did listen to these guys phenomenal music I get lost sometimes with them. Another band maybe you could check out is Aphrodite‘s child if you’re looking for more Prog, 666 album 👍
OK JUST SAY IT, I’M THE ONE WHO THREW YOU INTO THE DEEP END LOL! Maybe I could restore my good name by suggesting some really rockin’ Gentle Giant: “In A Glass House,” from the album of the same name. There is a ton of GG out there just aching to be listened to!
Para aquela geração que está acostumada a ouvir musica com duas ou no máximo três notas e muito difícil ouvir musica bem elaboradas com estrutura musical complexa, como os progressivos tipo YES, ELP, king Crimson etc.
kind of a weird intro to GG... starting with a deep track. you might get a very different first impression if you started with maybe Alucard off their debut album, or Pantagruel's Nativity, first track from this their 2nd album, or Peel The Paint from their 3rd. btw, they're from Scotland, as am I. thanks for listening. :-)
Para um maior contato com musica bem elaborada sugiro ouvirem a peça 23-minute track "Supper's Ready" do album do Genesis "Fox Trot". com variações próximas de musica clássica.
My feelings too. I love prog, but most of their stuff just doesn’t move me. I’ve tried to like them because I just think I should. The only album I kind of enjoyed was Civilian that was more a last gasp at mainstream music.
@@melvinwomack3717 I saw the original play on Broadway… with Stephanie Mills, Mabel King, Hinton Battle, Ted Ross etc. I just mentioned the play because they seemed to think it was just a movie and I didn’t know if they were aware that it was based on a play.
@@melvinwomack3717 A remarkable talent. I always thought it was terrible that they put Diana Ross in that role. I worked with Mabel King on a movie in the late 70’s … what a wonderful woman.. I was so excited because she brought the house down the night I saw the Wiz.. So did Ted Ross as the lion…
Incredible band. All multi-instrumentalists and influences from Baroque Classical through Soul to Blues and Jazz. Like no other band.
To this day, they are still the most creative bunch of musicians ever assembled, right up there with Zappa.
Fusion; saw these guys live 4-5 times during the 70’s. They toured with some eclectic groups.

GG = beautiful chaos. Not so chaotic if you're paying attention
RIP Ray Shulman, GG's bassist/violinist
'Progressive, period' - exactly!
This is a new one to me... love the musicianship and production
Welcome to the show !
Wait? What? How have I never heard this before? Thanks guys! 🤯🤯🤯!

Saw them open for YES in Seattle about 1974. Great show! Took some color pics that I still have to this day.
Five soloists all at the same time together?! My goodness!
Totally worth a deeper dive. Incredible musicians!
Bros. this is a trip on headphones and I never heard it before. 😎
That’s a good one!!
I love this channel because you guys know music and you are very open-minded. Love it.

Loved this band when I was 16!,
That was the tip of an iceberg. 😮

One of the greatest group of musicians ever to perform. Check out some of the live stuff
Great album! Wreck is another superb composition from it. Gentle Giant were probably the most creative and excentric proggers out there.
The proggiest of prog bands. Worth a deeper dive. Try “ Just The Same” by them.
My favourite live
Wtf have I been? Now I gotta dive into these cats Tx fellas

Hadn't thought of them in decades. Thank you!
Wow, this is awesome!
It’s new music for me! The lead singer is super smooth..
This is why I love you guys
Gentle Giant is an amazing band.
Nice to see your faces! "Peel the paint" and "Free hand" to get a wider picture!
We who lived in the time of prog were very fortunate, I pity you young folks
Very interesting to say the least, thanks guys.
Smart music, brilliant!
I’ve been listening to popular music since the Beatles and I somehow missed Gentle Giant. Amazing stuff.
I got it to them last yr. A very enjoyable ride. I've made it a point to stop playing my comfort zone playlists and explore. There's so much. I discovered Camel and Caravan too from the same era. Fantastic stuff.
We're so glad you guys picked up on Gentle Giant! Keep on it! RXM& EMILY
Wow only reaction I have seen of the strange song . Classic
Great track, probably the GG track I dj out the most. Like Sabbath, their first 6 or so albums are all great, and the production is pretty amazing.

From Glasgow, Scotland
"You know Quincy slapped some black cat" is hilarious out of context.
You can tell where Spock`s Beard got a lot of their sound.
Spocks Beard is a good band👍
Check out Lenny White "Stew, Cabbage & Galactic Beans"
I just found this album about a month ago when I bought a whole box of records…never heard of them before but it’s cool you guys going deep.
Do Peel the Paint…it WILL fry your brain and peel your innards.
FINALLY! GG FTW!! This stuff can be challenging but it grows on you.
Yes indeed

The Wiz is a 1978 American musical fantasy adventure film directed by Sidney Lumet. Adapted from the 1974 Broadway musical of the same name,
This is a band that can reprogram your brain if you let them. Try "Proclamation" for a real journey into spooky funk.
You HAVe to do the whole album
That's the Gentle Giant way. I never skip tracks with these guys. Headphones and straight thru. The best! 😎
This is it!
More of that please guys. 👍🏻

Dunno if you two are Madvillain fans, but they sampled Gentle Giant's Funny ways for the track Strange Ways.

We will check that one out for you

Try 'Aspirations' next. One of their more accessible tunes and just beautiful. Yet still a little funky.

Back to gentle giant on a Friday oh yeah 🤯this part when they bring it back 3:59

WTF?! Someone is actually reacting to GG!
Love Gentle Giant - my fave prog band. Not the track I'd start with though - but great nonetheless. 😀
Nice! Now Brand X. Or Mr Bungle.
Great muscianship, but just a little quirky for me. Though this tune was not bad.
My feelings too. I love prog, but most of their stuff just doesn’t move me. I’ve tried to like them because I just think I should. The only album I kind of enjoyed was Civilian that was more a last gasp at mainstream music.
No sampling (or as I call it, stealing) back then…The Wiz was already on Broadway, long before they made the movie…
Have you heard the original Broadway play Soundtrack? It sounds nothing like the Ocean picture soundtrack. Both are great but very different

Never bothered with them. Wow... Must explore right now, Bye.
Not the best GG song, but an interesting sample. Next one? Maybe In a Glass House? Just the Same? Advent of Panurge? So many possibilities!
Looney Toons...LOL
Great album! Nowhere near the best track though.
Yes is the only band better than G.G.
Rolling Stones - Emotional Rescue (Official Lyric Video)
We did that one but the people were upset we didn’t know what year it came out so we took it down.
