Fr. Thomas Merton discusses a papal appeal, addressed to the monks of Gethsemane in 1967, asking for advice from contemplatives for the common man. Fr. Merton discusses his own reflections on the history of contemplation, and in particular the place of contemplation in the modern world. An amazing talk!

Ive adored TM since reading him in the 1980s. Im a non-catholic or Christian and serve no denominational deity. That said, I’m no atheist. I know this, a true believer or faith ‘seeker’ needs not scripture or dogma. That’s the hero soap opera all religions use. But real prayer and sacred connection to ‘source/Creator’ happens alone within the quiettude. God will always be a verb, not a noun or adjective and even the word ‘god’ diminishes the concept. If one desires a creator to connect with, stay silent n pray then walk to help others. For any legit spiritual person sitting with Merton’s writings or hearing his voice here, do both. But with AI now, who knows how anybody and iconic figures specifically will be manipulated. Peace ✌️ thank you Merton for your magnificent works. A’ho
Contemplatives - that's a 'word' !!! So timely, even 57 years later...

Thomas Merton/Brother Louis, speaking freely here, no doubt put into motion the seeds of his demise a year or two later, while attending a monastic, ecumenical and interfaith retreat in Bangkok. The most troubling moment in his talk, emerges at minute 27 at which point he puts into question common/religious man’s obedience to secular and religious laws. In Rome, from the perspective of those receiving this message, this would include canonical law. At this point in the letter he defines “freedom“ as being obedient to no one, but to God. And in this obedience, the contemplative (and he includes non-Christian) in his/her prayerfulness strives for subjective union with God, and through such freedom, there is no room for secular, or even religious law. This being said, and given his increasing sway over public opinion concerning the Vietnam war, the atomic weapon, civil rights, women, rights, etc. the authorities, no doubt felt he endangered the freedoms of this world.

Good for you- what need do we have for God if we become the judges of our brothers?! The old 'Christian' habit [which is not at all Christian] of looking at the man, not at his words... Judging the man will do you a lot of good...
