    What a great mini bugger pattern! I love using size 10 and 12 buggers in small streams, they get hammered, but until now I was having to wrap saddle hackle for the body and trim it to the right length. Using ostrich herl is a great idea, no tedious trimming needed, I’m definitely gonna give it a try!

      Right on Jarrett!! I also started adding some 5x tippet as a "ribbing" which I counter wrap against the ostrich herl to help give it a bit more durability.

      @@TroutFreak that’s a good idea, it’s probably stronger than the flash you used in the video, I like using gold or copper wire since it adds a little weight! I really like the flashabou underbody idea too, so many minnow species are actually that flashy so it would match the hatch perfectly!

    Nice fly...the only thing I would think to make it a touch more durable would be to start the ostrich wrap in the back and go forward. The only thing keeping the ostrich down is the pink flash, couple teeth, and the hackle is done.

    Nice video! The only suggestion is to watch your background. You are wearing a black shirt and tying a black fly. A contrasting color shirt, or different color fly, would make the details of the fly much easier for the viewer to see. Thanks!

    I'm not sure about the durability of the fly but definitely is a nice one..I like the ostrich herl to set off the mini bugger hackle..I think it will catch fish for sure..

    • @TroutFreak
      @TroutFreak  Год назад

      Durability is a matter of perspective. For me, if it catches one fish, it's done its job 😏

    I totally get what you mean about chilling out with thread wraps, I used to use 3x more than I needed. I always hate recommending another RUclipsr to the RUclipsr I am watching but honestly I will have to in good conscience because it will help you as it did me years ago. Davie McPhail is the master of less thread, I highly recommend him. I hope you are not pissed at that but Davie can put a lot of materials on a hook because every wrap matters and you will obviously be a great Tyer one day, it is easy to see!
    What vise do you use?

    • @TroutFreak
      @TroutFreak  4 года назад

      Absolutely, and how could I be pissed about good old Davie? He is the master and I got nothing but love and respect for him, and many others for that matter - they're the ones that inspired me to launch my RUclips channel; just with a funky twist is all ;)
      I have the Stonfo FLYTEC LEVER VISE. Came with 3 different jaws so I'm good for a while! I couldn't tying without it now. I've tried other popular brands, which I like, but I do love my Stonfo.

    Hey man! Who's hook is that if I might ask? Great pattern. I have some small bugs like this but love yours and might add a few to my fly box! THANKS! How's that marabou smell? LOL!

    • @TroutFreak
      @TroutFreak  4 года назад +3

      LOL, marabou is more about the feel, the ostrich is what greatness smells like!
      Jig hook is by Fly Life. They have a great online store - flylifecompany.com/
      Use Deen15 for a 15% discount across the board. I use all their hooks, never failed me. Great deals on other items too.

      @TroutFreak  Год назад

      Thx Kandie. I'll try Amazon for the most part, but I also have a local fly shop I get most stuff from. Shopping online kinda sucks cause you can't physically see what you're buying but sometimes I don't have a choice.

      @@TroutFreak I put in black ostrich at a few online stores but it did not show those thin feathers. Is there another way of asking for that type?

    • @TroutFreak

      Ask for Ostrich herl.
      www.jsflyfishing.com/en-ca/products/10-12-ostrich-herl?_pos=3&_sid=77075d42b&_ss=r
