I've heard that Japanese is particularly hard for English native speakers, and I think studying it part time makes it harder. I, a native speaker of a different language, have been studying Japanese for over 20 years, and I'm not fluent yet, there's lots of room to improve. In my case, I was (supposedly) doing it full time in high school and at uni, but I only became able to hold a normal conversation after I graduated and started working at Japanese companies and shit. I think if you use a little bit of Japanese every day, eventually you'll get to a more natural fluent way of speaking.
I’ve heard this as well. In fact, she told me learning English was easier for her than learning Japanese, even though Japanese was her native language. I’ve wanted to learn Japanese for a long time, however; I feel very discouraged by the fact that I struggle severely with short term memory recall issues, even with repetition.
I dunno. I didn’t find learning Japanese to so impossibly difficult… but then again… all my teachers called me abnormal, so maybe I’m not the best judge of that.😅 At least to me… especially when I looked at foreigners I knew in Tokyo who lived there for 10-16 years, but basically could only order at restaurants… I think it generally comes down to drive. Are you ABSOLUTELY driven and determined to try to achieve near-native fluency? Being willing to eat, sleep and shit Japanese day and night… at any and every opportunity you get… always avoid using English with Japanese friends, acquaintances, colleagues, etc. (most never did with me anyway because my Japanese is much better than their English and… well… I don’t like being a free English teacher). Language and culture are closely tied, so spend some time learning the culture and mannerisms. Or at least it worked something like that for me anyway…
Exactly, it just comes down to focus and determination in the end. I completely understand if somebody doesn't have that same drive though, among needing the time to juggle japanese with everything else in a busy life. I managed to learn a lot and get kanji down pat by slaving away at it for days on end when I had no job and a ton of free time. Though I'm also heavily invested in japanese culture and media so I naturally felt compelled to learn. There was games and other stuff for my favorite franchise that only existed in japanese or you had to look up some fan translations, so I felt like not knowing was an obstacle I had to get through. But, I'm also an outlier. 😅@@jmbickham
Husbands are like dads to their wives sometimes and vice versa. I low-key think that's how they (unintentionally) practice being parents before actually becoming parents
I cannot express how excited I am for you. I’m learning Chinese (in a class) and I love it so much. I’ll admit, doing that with my other activities and school can be a lot. Obviously I’m still in school so I don’t have a job yet, but I get the idea of that overwhelming feeling. I’m shocked how much you’ve improved over the past year. I remember in some of your past videos you would cut out the points where you would speak Japanese. Now you’ve grown and though you may make mistakes, everyone does. Much love
Listening to you and Joey speaking to each other in Japanese reminds me just how much work I still have to go with learning Japanese. I wish I can find a class like the one you attended in the States. 😭
Same. I'm thinking about trying to find a Japanese penpal to help learn. But I'm still in the process of learning how to read hiragana, katakana, and kanji. I've got hiragana down for the most part and just started on katakana but trying to understand the grammar is a bit confusing in comparison to english. I've been learning through duolingo for now so it's a little helpful but I know there's so much more to be learned outside of it.
Agree with Joey undervaluing youself Aki! I think it’s the Filipina in you not recognizing and giving yourself credit when it’s due 🥺 don’t be too hard on yourself! The fact that you are able to converse and understand a whole other language in a few years is amazing in itself ❤️👏🏼 we are very proud of you and you’ve inspired a lot of people here! Great job!
sorry to hear what your family has gone through and congratulations on graduating from school! makes me myself want to learn Japanese and other languages.
Stream completely in Japanese with other 'tubers like Kson. It's about immersing yourself in the language so its so much more common to you. Let the editing do the work afterwards and just have fun. Congratulations on passing. 👏 👏
Congratulations Aki, I remembered taking Japanese back in high school in my freshman year but nowadays I'm awful at speaking Japanese but it's definitely a challenge...
I actually loved seeing you just talking with Joey in an everyday/relaxed setting, it was super cute! Everyone saying Joey looks like an ice-cold judgmental senpai, nah, that's the "Neurodivergent Introvert surprised with a conversation when they hadn't done the hour of mental prep beforehand" look. He's fully there and involved, he's just not masking for the camera, and it was sweet to just seem them being domestic together.
If you're able to hold an entire convo in Japanese with a native speaker...I think that's a sign that you're good. What was Joey doing while you were talking to him BTW? He looked super focused on it lol.
The impostor syndrome is so real. English is my second language and even if I'm living in America now, married to an American and using English every day I still feel self-conscious of not just my accent but also my skills in general. You are doing amazing! I'm learning Japanese on the side and honestly it's such a difficult language to learn, my transition from Spanish to English took years of self study but Japanese has proven to be very challenging. Living in the country and having a partner that speaks the language helps for sure so believe in yourself! Good luck!
I think it helps not thinking of it as in English or Spanish but as in its own language without the romanji. Im in the same boat and its helped me alot visualize and learn through the kanji Katakana characters rather then through Romanji English or Spanish
I can't believe how done Aki is with Japanese after this video. CONGRATS ON GRADUATING, THO!!! You obviously worked so hard to get where you are now, but what an amazing step you've succeeded!!!
Congratulations! You’re one of the few people who inspired me to keep trying to learn Japanese. Its hard because Im an American highschooler but I keep trying 😭
I'm a student at the school Aki attended. (I also show up in the background of this video a few times. Her videos on the school are what made me decide to come here, and it has vastly improved my life. So thank you Aki!!! Sad to see yo go, but you were always awesome! やっと日本語上手ですねwww。
OMG! I feel like a mother seeing Aki and Joey talking in Japanese, I feel proud that Aki can actually talk in Japanese better than ever!. Making me really motivated to study Japanese as well. おめでとう Aki!
congratulations Aki, its so inspiring to me to hear you talk to Joey in Japanese its lovely to hear. i cant speak a word but it has inspired me to learn. all the best from the U.K
Congratulations on completing Japanese school! I think you communicating with Joey was super cool and both of you should continue it to help improve your Japanese. He's super supportive.
Aki, on my knees i thank you for the Go Go Nihon recommendation!! I’ve been looking for a way to get to live and work in Japan and i’ve been on the verge of giving up multiple times, but this might give me something to grasp on to. Thank you so much *crey * On a different note: i’m so proud of how far you’ve come!! I’m 33 now and i’ve been learning Japanese since i was 13, so you’re absolutely right about learning a language not having an “end line”. Your pronunciation is already sounding really good and you’re only gonna get better! Have fun and take it at your own pace 😊 Thanks again!❤
congrats Aki!!! Surrounding yourself with Japanese really can help you learn, I remember times when I've correctly used words I didn't even realize I knew, simply from picking it up from hearing others speak. Immersion is very important for learning any language too, not just Japanese.
Omg congrats!! The title totally tricked me into thinking you quit 😅 the more you practice, the better you will get. And honestly, sounds pretty awesome to me! I took 4 years in highschool and I can't hardly say anything
It's nice that Joey is honest and patient with you as you speak Japanese. I am hispanic but mostly speak English. The times I would speak spanish, family or other fluent classmates at school would laugh or tease me if I messed up and it honestly discouraged the hell out of me, I know more spanish now than when I was a kid but I still choose to respond in english because being laughed at and teased really effected my confidence with my second language. It nice to see you getting encourgment as you learn a new language, the fact that you can hold it in a conversation and participate in Japanese activities is amazing.
I would LOVE some kind of video or series with you and Joey speaking Japanese together - not necessarily "how to speak Japanese" videos, but just conversations, doing daily activities, etc. It's so nice to hear you speaking fully in Japanese together (and cute when there's the odd English thrown in) and I think it would help a lot of us studying Japanese!
Congrats on graduating! My two best friends and I will be traveling to Japan for two weeks. We are learning some Japanese. Simple phrases to help us get around.
“Where is X?” And “Where is the bathroom (toilet)” will be your two best friends! Others like “how much is it? (When buying something)”, “do you have X?”, and “What’s your name?” Are also super useful! Have fun and good luck!
I hope you have/had a good time in the Philippines, even despite the circumstances. Being with family and going back to one's homeland can be quite the experience, coming from someone who's had to do the same journey when my grandfather passed last year. Hope you and your family are well. ❤
Congratulations Aki Dearest 👏👏🎉. I'm so sorry for your loss 🙏♥️. I'm learning Japanese and it is a super hard language to learn. At least Joey 🦘 speaks Japanese, so that will be a huge help. I hope that you see all of your family really soon 🫶 Take care 🫶
Congratulations on your graduation! 🎉🎉🎉🎉 Your Japanese is definitely great and worth celebrating for. And in terms of to keep improving, I agree with others about sometimes making videos (Collabs or not) and just speak only Japanese. You do content, you have the freedom to choose which language you speak in which video. As well as how often you do it.

@@IcuTapIcu he's been studying japanese for 26 years; so.. Like; reading the dictionary, reading kanji, ect. ect. when he has 2 decades invested into learning japanese lmaooo
I can relate to a lot of what you're saying. I've been spending decades trying to become fluent in Japanese. But I found myself always lacking confidence due to the fact that as I was learning more about Japan my thoughts were becoming deeper and that meant I had to learn new Japanese words to express my thoughts that went far beyond what was required to communicate. But I felt that what I wanted to share was really important for the Japanese. Anyway, it was a process of continually going back to the drawing board and starting from zero. My big break to achieve fluency came in 2010. By a stroke of luck, I managed to start a Master of Science program in Psychology at an American university with the Japanese as my target population. Studying Japanese was put on the backburner so I could concentrate on this degree program that I thought would have no use in Japan since psychology is stigmatized. But I found it tremendously interesting. I graduated in 2014 with Honors as a double major in Educational Psychology and Child & Adolescent Development. With that done, I went back to my Japanese studies. I ended up specializing in "Active learning" in my graduate program which didn't exist in Japan, anyway, with the general population. Only in certain private schools and of course the international schools where English is the main language. To my great shock, 6 months after graduating there was an article in the newspaper saying that "Active learning" was going to be introduced in the public school system. But society was saying it'll never happen and it's just wishful thinking by the government. Well, lo and behold, public legislation was passed in 2020 to teach active learning starting with elementary school, junior high school in 2021, and high school in 2022. Now back to what this has to do with being fluent in Japanese. As I write this, I find myself in conversations with the Japanese about psychology. With such a deep topic, I'm never going to be fluent. But it doesn't matter. The important thing is that I'm understood. I just came back from a meeting with the Japan Educational Counseling Society at Waseda University with world famous researchers, in particular, Professor Kawamura of Waseda University who developed a psychology test that's given in all grades from 1st to 12th as part of the legislation that has been passed in the past several years to incorporate fields in psychology into the educational system. By specializing, I can now talk (and read) in Japanese about very deep topics without having to worry about being fluent because I've got information that the Japanese are strongly interested in. And since psychology is a passion of mine, speaking and reading Japanese about such a difficult topic never gets tiring. In summary, find your passion, learn all you can about it in your native language, then find those Japanese people with the same interest. You'll be learning Japanese without actually studying it. Keep in mind, this is only one approach towards using your Japanese and only a suggestion. With your strong critical thinking skills, I'm looking forward to your next video about how you're going to take that next big step in life.
It definitely helps your pro-efficiency when you're actually living with someone who is entirely fluent in the language, like Joey. It's the same as when I was learning Chinese because my grandma taught me, though years of non-writing practice kinda dwindled down but I can still speak it,
As expected, Joey being joey on the table. ngl it was so cute watching you guys converse in Japanese and I'm also on my Japanese learning journey too! Will try my best to keep going even if it does take me decades. がんばります!!
Thank you for sharing your experiences. Have more confidence in yourself and your abilities, and remember that people do not care if you are saying the wrong thing. If they can understand you then you're doing great. Think about all the times you have conversed with someone in Japan, the US, or the Philippines and they had broken English, but im sure you didn't care! You prob understood them well enough (or maybe not, and that's fine) but you don't have to be perfect at it. You are an adult learning another language for fun. It's hard. You're doing great.
Seeing you and Joey together, speaking japanese casually, helping each other, building the atmospheres is so wholesomes. Whatever you do Aki, if its makes you happy go for it. If you tired and need to stop, then stop doing it and get some rest, recharge yourself. Dont mind okay?

Joey’s comment about his mom correcting his Japanese resonates so hard. To this day, I can’t send a text to my mom without running the risk of my grammar or written Mandarin character getting corrected. For reference I’m a native Mandarin speaker XD
I've been learning English for over 35 years, but since it's my fifth language (and second non-native) I still feel like I make a lot of dumb mistakes. I can't imagine learning as much Japanese as you did in the amount of time you did. You are absolutely amazing! Stay awesome and much love from Slovenia! :)
I love how your title implicates you gave up Japanese, but you're actually graduated from it. Congratulations Aki! I hope you have much more fun speaking it with a lot more people in the future!
Congrats Aki! I also agree that with language you just keeps on learning and it never like fully stops at one point. That student sponsor is really interesting service! My relative may take up on it sometime in future!
Hi Aki! Firstly, congratulations on graduating! From what you tell us, it was a lot of hard work, stress and bad timing but you made it work, good job!☺🎊🎉 On a personal level, I would like to say that admire your ability to "confidently say the wrong thing." When I studied, that was something I struggled so hard with. I didn't realize how prideful a person I could be, to not want to say something I didn't have a good grasp on and not be able to explain myself well after making the mistake. I think being able to make mistakes and still move forward is its own kind super power, really! I think you're just going to get even better and better in the future and it sounds like you have good people all around you to help. Bless you and yours, have fun and do your best. You got this!💕
Outputting is sooo tough so i can relate to you Aki! I’ve been traveling to Japan for abit this year with my N4-early N3 level grammar and vocab and the struggle is real. I always struggle with listening and speaking in Japanese (I perform best in reading) so the fact that you could listen in N2 level after such a short time is amazing! Even when Joey was speaking to you in probably 普通 speed and while I know you tend to get used to how your partner speaks it's still very impressive how you can easily understand him. Language learning is a lifelong journey so I'm sure you'll keep improving your Japanese from now on. Best of luck!

What's mean アキちゃんとできてると思う?
I love how Joey was speaking like he was your Dad 😂😂
He is
He's daddy of course

CONGRATULATIONS AKII!!!!

It’s really wholesome watching you and Joey speak in Japanese together! Super proud of how much you’ve learned ^-^
Congratulations Aki I'm proud of you! I'm wanting to learn myself
This is so awesome! I'm very proud of you and your studies. Even with not being full time it's awesome you can speak and understand pretty well!
do you realize how braindead people sound when they say awesome! awesome! awesome! all the time?
Also, my condolences on your loss. May God bless you and your family.
I'm a student at the school Aki attended. (I also show up in the background of this video a few times. Her videos on the school are what made me decide to come here, and it has vastly improved my life. So thank you Aki!!! Sad to see yo go, but you were always awesome! やっと日本語上手ですねwww。
Congratulations 🎉🍾🎈! You are a very talented and smart human being.
Congrats on graduating Aki really happy for you and I know Joey is really proud of you
Aki, on my knees i thank you for the Go Go Nihon recommendation!! I’ve been looking for a way to get to live and work in Japan and i’ve been on the verge of giving up multiple times, but this might give me something to grasp on to. Thank you so much *crey *
On a different note: i’m so proud of how far you’ve come!! I’m 33 now and i’ve been learning Japanese since i was 13, so you’re absolutely right about learning a language not having an “end line”. Your pronunciation is already sounding really good and you’re only gonna get better!
Have fun and take it at your own pace 😊
Thanks again!❤
congrats Aki!!!
Surrounding yourself with Japanese really can help you learn, I remember times when I've correctly used words I didn't even realize I knew, simply from picking it up from hearing others speak. Immersion is very important for learning any language too, not just Japanese.
Yayyyyy congratulations on graduating 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 so proud 🥹
This is so wholesome and nice, thanks for sharing, おめでとうあきさん
I'm just thankful that the sub was on :D, Wholesome story Aki thanks for sharing.
Always a good day when Aki posts and congrats! We're all very proud of you and wish you good luck on the continuations of your studies
As a Dogen fan hearing Joey say あなたの日本語を上手 (paraphrasing). Hit just right lol.
OMGsh I’m right there with ya!
Halfway through and I want to send love and condolences to you and your family. Also, congratulations on learning Japanese ❤
I hope you have/had a good time in the Philippines, even despite the circumstances. Being with family and going back to one's homeland can be quite the experience, coming from someone who's had to do the same journey when my grandfather passed last year. Hope you and your family are well. ❤
Congratulations, Aki! i'm sorry that you were going through so much at that time, but you've accomplished so much!!!
Your Japanese is definitely great and worth celebrating for.
And in terms of to keep improving, I agree with others about sometimes making videos (Collabs or not) and just speak only Japanese.
You do content, you have the freedom to choose which language you speak in which video. As well as how often you do it.
Congratulations! You did it, Aki! I think you are doing great with your Japanese. I, a Japanese person from Japan, have been in the US for six years and still struggling with English haha. As for listening, your videos (and Joey and Trash Taste videos also) help me a lot! Thank you for making my studying fun. Don't hesitate to ask Joey or friends for help :)
2:13 im learning japanese myself and that little conversation was just... so useful and easy to follow, i wish i knew where to fide videos full of these to help me study
Joey is so good at Japanese it’s actually scary because he’s also perfect with English and understanding English things.
he's literately half japanese.. why wouldn't he not be good at japanese? His family comes from Japan, he is Japanese its his family native language.
@ya-boy-joshy He's also Half Australian from his father's side, but he also is exceptionally Good at Japanese like Better than natives.
@@IcuTapIcuI believe he explained in an old video that his mom did raise him and his siblings to learn Japanese. On top of just living and growing up in Australia. So he had his whole life learning it.
@@usonohoshi6165 Yeah, and he also used to read the Japanese dictionary for fun.
@@IcuTapIcu he's been studying japanese for 26 years; so..

Super glad on how far you can. I’ve loved your videos for years. Before I moved to Korea 3 years ago
Congrats on graduating Aki!! You've done so well! Keep up the amazing work! >w
It's the same as when I was learning Chinese because my grandma taught me, though years of non-writing practice kinda dwindled down but I can still speak it,
Thank you so much for the Go! Go! Nihon link! 🙏
man the spontaneous conversation with joey was so fun to listen to, you're speaking really well! you deserve to be proud of your progress! :)
Love u Aki.
Thanks for coming to South Africa 🇿🇦 this year.
Hope you enjoyed the safari.
Dude I went on a Go Go Nihon summer trip! Nice to see them getting some air time. It was a great trip 😊
omg, it's SO CUTE to see you and Joey speak in japanese! I love it!
As expected, Joey being joey on the table.
ngl it was so cute watching you guys converse in Japanese and I'm also on my Japanese learning journey too! Will try my best to keep going even if it does take me decades. がんばります!!
Congratulations Aki❤️ And im so sorry for the loss of your grandma💔 Sending Prayers and condolences to her and all of you guys❤
My condolences to you about your grandmother Aki, I hope cope with this the best that you can 🥲🥲🥲
Thank you for sharing your experiences.
日本語めっちゃ上達していて、びっくりした!!👀✨
身近に日本語ネイティブのジョーイがいるのは心強いね!私も英語の勉強を頑張ります💪✨
Seeing you and Joey together, speaking japanese casually, helping each other, building the atmospheres is so wholesomes. Whatever you do Aki, if its makes you happy go for it. If you tired and need to stop, then stop doing it and get some rest, recharge yourself. Dont mind okay?
Suddenely your video poped out on my suggestion list, and I saw you went to school in Yokohama! I was so surprised and writting comment now haha Hope you like Yokohama!
Congratulations Sempai. A well earned goal. Now what is next for you and the channel? Cannot wait to see what you'll do. Salutations.
I was in that college last March to do a translation gig for some Taiwanese high school students ! It was also the graduation day for some other students I guess
That’s SO wild that you brought up Go Go Nihon! I JUST stumbled onto them the day you posted! I am stoked to someday live in Japan to study Japanese, knowing it exists!
From Aki to Aki, your Japanese is great! A very friendly Japanese that will keep me wanna talk to you❤
Aki seriously it’s impressive, I really want to learn but it’s such a struggle to stay on point . You’ve done amazing so far!
I love just the two of your speaking Japanese with the subtitles. You should do a video going out bar hopping and speaking only Japanese. Such fun practice!
Aki you doing perfect!, just to tell you it took me 7 years to master english idiom after coming from a only spanish home and then suddenly thst changed it ,you doing excellent so
To everyone who is learning an idiom i give you a big applause because i know it's slow but you are doing excellent my friend!!!!
Joey’s right you’re undervaluing yourself putting everything in consideration you’re actually doing great in my opinion seeing the plan you made with Joey speaking more Japanese with each other is gonna be great to get even better at it. Queen you’re a hard worker ik this year you’ll be fluent in the language in no time I wish you plenty of luck
Going to be doing basically the same thing soon, good luck on your journey of learning
can't you revisit this later?? or take some sort of aiding book/app assist? I think it would suck to quit entirely 😭❤ but please be safe on your reunion. have fun. and IM SO FUCKING PROUD.
That conversation that you had with Joey was really good, your Japanese was very good and you were able to keep the conversation going for a good amount of time, so don’t forget to give urself some credit ❤❤
Congratulations on graduating & pushing through everything you've had to go through in order to get there. I wish you all the best in your life! I'm so sorry to hear of your loss.
Joey’s comment about his mom correcting his Japanese resonates so hard. To this day, I can’t send a text to my mom without running the risk of my grammar or written Mandarin character getting corrected. For reference I’m a native Mandarin speaker XD
I’m not Chinese but I’m interested in learning it
Hope you are safe and well Aki! Please give us an update when you have time..Praying for Japan!
Congratulations! We are so happy and proud of you ❤️
I am planning on going to the same school! That’s so cool. You definitely help inspire me to keep learning Japanese.
Chilla's Art needs to have you voice a character in one of their games!!! Your accent is so good & your voice would be perfect❤❤
This video just makes me wanna learn even more! You’re really amazing at the language you are undervaluing how amazing you are!!
Congratulations, Aki!!!! hope to learn as much as you did!!😊🎉
I've been learning English for over 35 years, but since it's my fifth language (and second non-native) I still feel like I make a lot of dumb mistakes. I can't imagine learning as much Japanese as you did in the amount of time you did. You are absolutely amazing! Stay awesome and much love from Slovenia! :)
Awesome video akidearest and congratulations finishing Japanese language school, fantastic job.
From what you tell us, it was a lot of hard work, stress and bad timing but you made it work, good job!☺🎊🎉
On a personal level, I would like to say that admire your ability to "confidently say the wrong thing." When I studied, that was something I struggled so hard with.
I’m currently staying a few days in Nagano area where English is rarer so i can feel the strain in communicating, however it is so rewarding.
BIG LOVE AND HUGS TO YA AKI 🥺🥺🥺 From all the family stuff that has been pounding you so hard, you try to be calm and bounce back at your own pace. My deepest condolence to you and fam (for the Granma) 🥺💐and Congratulations on your Sis's graduation 🥳🎓
Congratulations! You worked really hard and I'm really glad you had a good time! We'll be cheering for you in the future!
I’m glad you aren’t in so much stress anymore, I have heard that Japanese is a difficult language to learn so it’s awesome how much you’ve progressed!👍👍
アキちゃん学校卒業おめでとう!あと関係ないけどジョーイってアキちゃんの前とトラッシュテイストの時でキャラのギャップがすごい。
I really enjoyed seeing you and Joey speak Japanese to each other! I would love to see more of that! To be honest I'd love to see more english speaking youtubers trying to speak Japanese on their youtube channels more often! Huge well done for taking the Japanese classes and for not being afraid to make mistakes ...that is how we all learn.
Congratulations mamá Aki!!!
I’m glad students have this opportunity to study this language like this nowadays :) Thanks for sharing:)
