प्रेम की आलौकिक अनुभूति से प्रेरित अशोक कुमार की कल्पना को कमाल अमरोही ने रजतपट पर ‘महल’ के रूप में उतारकर पार्श्व गायिका लता मंगेशकर और अभिनेत्री मधुबाला के भविष्य को न केवल स्वर्णिम उड़ान दी अपितु सिनेमा में पुनर्जन्म की अवधारणा पर केन्द्रित बहुआयामी कार्यों का प्रेरणास्रोत बन गया। वर्तमान दौर में मनोरंजन की स्तरहीनता ने सिनेदर्शकों की संवेदनात्मक पक्ष को भले ही तिलांजलि दे दी हो किन्तु इसके उन्नयन के प्रति कलाधर्मियों की जिजीविषा स्तुत्य है।
महिला प्रधान भूमिका पर तत्कालीन स्थापित अभिनेत्रियों के इंकार पर जब इसकी कास्टिंग जटिल हो गई तब 15 वर्षीया मधुबाला ने अपनी वय से दोगुने आयुवाले अशोक कुमार के साथ अभिनय स्वीकार किया। पारखियों की अस्वीकृति के बावजूद, अमरोही की जिद ने सिनेमा के साथ ही मधुबाला की प्रतिभा और उनकी क्षमताओं को प्रकट कर एक युग में जीने का रोमांच उत्पन्न कराने में सफल रहे। सिनेमा का कलात्मक पक्ष यह है कि राजसी जीवन की विलासिता प्रणय वेग को बाधित नहीं कर सकते अपितु, अनुराग की यह ज्योति नूतन जीवन का वरण करती हुई आदर्श स्नेह के सहारे मृत्यु के तमस को भी आलौकित करती रहती है। लगभग चार मिनट लंबा "मुश्किल है बहुत मुश्किल" गीत एक ही टेक में पूरा कर मधुबाला ने कमाल को कृतार्थ कर दिया।
गीतकार नख्शब जारवचि का ‘मुश्किल’ शिल्प कृसानुकाम के रहस्यमयी उद्दीपनों को समेटे हुए है। जिसे संगीतकार खेमचन्द प्रकाश ने विरहिणी के लिए चन्द्रोदय, ज्वरग्रस्त के लिए उष्णपात, शीतपीडि़त के लिए हिमपात व विष विस्फोट से मूर्च्छित के लिए नागदंश के सुखद अनुभूति में स्वरबद्ध किया है।

लता जी को तो महल के बाद लोगों ने जाना पर मधुबाला १९४९ तक १५ फिल्म कर चुकी थीं , बेहद कम उम्र में।
स्वर्ग की अप्सरा मधुबाला को सही पहचान नहीं मिली । कम लोग यह जानते हैं कि लता जी के गीत रजतपट पर मधुबाला के होठों पर आ कर हीं प्रसिद्ध हुए। मधुबाला जी ने हमें लता मंगेशकर दिया।

This haunting melody by Lata Mangeshkar is one of my Mum's favourite songs. My Mum has passed away and would have been 85 years old now but whenever I listen to this masterpiece I feel my Mum is listening too. She remembers these songs of Mahal 1949 from when she was a young girl living in India. I love Bombay Talkies, Ashok Kumar and Madhubala. Rajkumari also sang for this film and she too has a unique singing style. Wonderful music by Khemchand Prakash. Thank you for posting immortal songs by immortal singers.
