    How can I register a drone above 250g-25kg as an International student?

    • @DonJoyce
      @DonJoyce  Год назад

      You need to apply for a foreign pilot SFOC (special flight operations certificate) with Transport Canada.

  • @Zbip57
    @Zbip57 4 года назад

    Huh? Wait. Ya hafta register if your drone weighs between 250g - 25kg. Yet at 3:50 one can select "lighter than air"? And you can choose to specify a maximum takeoff weight of less than 250g, or more than 25kg? Why would anyone do that??

    • @DonJoyce
      @DonJoyce  4 года назад

      Ha! The 'lighter than air' option went right over my head! (sorry...bad drone joke). But, yeah...why are 25Kg even options??!! Maybe they give you warnings/errors if you choose them?? I didn't explore all these dark corners of this site. It was so clearly designed by a team TOTALLY disconnected from the rest of the program...just the term 'Drone' all over it (including on the certificates, btw). And these aircraft 'types' are different than the ones NAV CANADA calls for on their flight authorizations btw. ALSO btw, who ever came up with the term "rotary wing" for the MOST COMMON type of drone?!?! And what's a 'hybrid'? Sorry for the rant....

    • @Zbip57
      @Zbip57 4 года назад

      I'm sorry too. I do VERY much appreciate all of the hard work you put into producing every one of your helpful videos! I've learned tons of useful stuff from you. But I still haven't bothered to register my Phantom or any of my R/C planes or do any of TC's tests. I used to have a Private Pilot's Licence with a Night Rating, so I know I should be able to study and pass the drone test. But every time I look at any of TC's drone nonsense it makes me go grrrrrrrr. I shelved the Phantom and my model planes and instead bought a 249 gram Mavic Mini. Why does TC talk about maximum takeoff WEIGHT instead of MASS? You could legally fly an enormous R/C Hindenburg Zeppelin with a mass of one ton as long as you could fill it with enough helium to make it buoyant so its max takeoff WEIGHT is "lighter-than-air". Don't they know the difference between mass and weight?

    • @Zbip57
      @Zbip57 4 года назад

      I'm thinking Hybrid is something with rotary wing vertical takeoff capability that then transitions to fixed wing flight. But why differentiate at all? They've already lumped everything together as an RPAS, even if they still insist on calling them drones.

    • @DonJoyce
      @DonJoyce  4 года назад

      @@Zbip57 I really like the idea of a one-ton zeppelin RPAS! That said, TC would/could probably argue that grams are technically measures of mass, not weight, and hence they actually got it right. Our common language of what something 'weighs' would likely ground the Hindenburg 2.

The accessories above include the propeller guides/cages, bringing my sub 250g drone up to almost 300g. And, yes, you're right, do I really need them? I would say they give me more confidence in my flights, I just now need to ensure I'm in the correct airspace (...I can't fly in my 'class E' airspace anymore with the propeller guards on, but if I remove them, I'm good to go!)😂

    What do your mean 'your drone' ? - if you have one or two that's ok, but most areomodelers have a dozen or more RC planes ? Regardleвв of the cost what a chore, if it's accountability they want, why not have the operator/pilot details on the model !. I guess that's bureaucracy for you !

    • @DonJoyce
      @DonJoyce  2 года назад

      Well, I totally agree with you. I recommend having your name and phone number on your drone(s). Somebody MAY phone you if they find a lost machine, but they are very unlikely to bother trying to figure out what to do with some meaningless string of numbers. And yes, I get it with the 'fleet' problem.

    • @ericwillis777
      @ericwillis777 2 года назад

      And what about the requirements of 9.48 to keep records of dates and times you go out to fly model aeroplanes, keep for 12 months, and records of modiifications and repairs for 24 months, maybe a flight diary is doable, but if you tell the truth about mods/ repairs for model planes, and you have a few of them, then that is one mass of paperwork - for what ? I don't get it, if some 'enforcement agency' checks your plane and you don't have the registration certificate, and that's not "permanently" fixed on it then you are at their discretion and liable to a fine, but you say it's ok not to bother ?. Name address, phone no. Is OK for MAAC but if I want to fly for example, slope soaring, then I'm going to have to comply, fortunately I only have a few slope planes. And what about sec 901.49 1c, an accident report including an analysis if you damage your model, and also for keep for 12 months. Some of this stuff has been lifted from full size regs without much, if any, thought. I'll be up all night writing reports if I took it seriously ! That's the problem, once you Iet silliness get into a system of regulation it destroys it's credibility from within, and destroys the real purpose, leaving just indifferent compliance as the goal.

    • @DonJoyce
      @DonJoyce  2 года назад

      To be clear, I did not say 'not to bother' registering your drone. I said that having your name and phone number on it is probably more useful. Yes, the maintenance records and SO many other bits of nonsense in the rules need to be changed, and the Drone Pilot Association of Canada is working with TC to do that. In the meantime, you should follow the rules to the best of your ability. In the case of maintenance records, clearly you need to use judgement in terms of what is written down. Personally, I wouldn't write down 'cleaned crud off the rotors', but would note a firmware upgrade...just as examples. The Drone Pilot Canada app was specifically created to take a LOT of the pain out of the bureaucratic parts of the rules.

    • @ericwillis777
      @ericwillis777 2 года назад

      @@DonJoyce OK I guess who is 'bothering' is up for grabs but like evergone involved in this you are obsessed with quadcopters. These rules are primarily suitable for quadcopters. Model airplanes are not the same cannot follow the same flightpath, are not used for video observation for obvious reasons, although FPV is possible it cannot be done without an observer for practical reasons, ie the aircraft is always moving and does not have hover ability. They require a runway for take off and landing so cannot be flown in the same environments as quadcopters. The list of differences is long but, even you, talk about RPAS as if they are all the same. I have hardly seen anything 'aeronautical' about quadcopters, aerodynamic theory is out, modelling of scale aircraft is out, conventional aircraft control and manouvers are out, in short, quadcopters need to be treated separately, and devotees like yourself need to start flying fixed wing model planes so that you understand before you lump all RPAS together in the same pot. Yes, i do have a quadcopter, fortunately I didn't spend much on it, tried it, don't have any use for it, and it sits on the shelf.
