Freddie Mills In Training for Len Harvey - June 1942 Colorized

In 1942, amidst World War II, a remarkable boxing event unfolded for the British and Empire light-heavyweight titles. The match featured serving members of the Royal Air Force - both boxers, the referee, and the promoter. Len Harvey, a Pilot Officer, and Freddie Mills, a Sergeant, were the contenders. Harvey, already a champion in multiple weight categories, hadn't fought for three years, while Mills continued his professional career, winning 16 out of 18 matches during the war.
The event took place at White Hart Lane, Tottenham Hotspur's home ground, arranged by John Muldoon, a serving aircraftsman. Mills, known for his aggressive style, faced the more elegant and aged Harvey. Despite Mills' leave to prepare for the bout, Harvey seemed ill-prepared.
With Eugene Henderson, an RAF Sergeant, as the referee, the match drew a record wartime crowd of 42,000. Mills dominated, knocking Harvey out of the ring in the second round, thus becoming the champion. Harvey retired from boxing but remained in the RAF until 1946. Mills continued his boxing career and eventually became the world champion in 1948.

Cameras in the training camp were still something of a novelty in those days. Mills doesn't look as if he's going all that hard and looks more like he's putting on a show for the cameras.

@@LegendsofBoxinginColor Where it's really apparent is when they are "sparring". The kid that he's working with, well let's be honest, he's trying hard but looks a bit "raw". Mills looks like he's trying not to accidentally hurt him.
