i was searching for an answer to this.!just found this in a crate and was confused how it couldn’t be on apple music. finding this more and more with some of the hidden jazz/funk i find.
I believe Wes told him before he died, that Ponder needed to carry on that tradition of playing. If you listen to him on John Patton's Blue Note albums of the 60's, he's not using the thumb.

Every artist has begged and borrowed from his or her precursors, to find new illumination...and twisted the work of his or her forebears, to find new ways of experiencing the arts. Since when did turning art on its side and seeing it from a different perspective...mean Attention deficit, as opposed to attentive musing and speculation? Man, oh, man. LOL!

It's my first time hearing Ponder. He's terrific. I love the Wes Montgomery-inspired playing.
