Welcome to this Ed Sheeran "Perfect" Guitar Tutorial! #perfect is a beautiful love track from Ed Sheeran's new album Divide and is probably my favourite off his new album. It's got a beautiful finger picked riff for most of the first half of the song and also has a fun guitar solo to play in the bridge which i''ll also teach you!

For anyone wondering, there is a slight error for fingerpicking the Break I found at around 12:00
David plays the Cadd9 part as the 5th string, 4th string, 3rd string, and 2nd string (with the Cadd9 chord shape), but the tab says 6th string (3rd fret), 4th string, 3rd string 2nd string.
Because of this, also keep in mind that the 4th string is 2nd fret (which is part of the Cadd9 chord shape).
So basically you start at the 5th string 3rd fret, and go down according to the Cadd9 chord shape.
Just remember it's using the Cadd9 chord shape and if you look at the chords before it, you're picking the bass note first - so stick with what David is saying!
Probably just a small mistake, but we all make mistakes.

Bass note for C is the 5th string. Follow what you know. His diagrams/charts are sometimes off a bit. Wonderful tutorial, I love this song!

I love this tutorial. Because I've been learning guitar for 7 years now (picking, then strumming chords 2 years ago), I was able to pick up the basics of the song really easily, and then just add harder strumming as I please during the song because just DDDDDD seemed too simple and monotone in my opinion. The explanation is spot on, so is the editing and chord writing which made this even easier (although there's 2 mistakes specifically in the break at 11:34 which is too bad because it's also the hardest part and having errors can make it even more confusing if people don't notice them). And playing the entire song at the end with a vocal track too was the cherry on top. I watched that last part 5 times slowly while upping the speed each time. Definitely earned my sub!

Thanks for this tutorial.
This is the best tutorial for this song, IMO. Other tutorials tells you to use standard Em and C, but using Em7 and Cadd9 actually makes this song easier to play compared to standard Em and C chords as they make the chord transitions a lot easier; for most of the song, you're only moving your index and middle fingers. And I believe these chords seems to sound a lot closer to the original as well?
And this song has a short solo section which does require some challenging techniques for beginners, but it's just at a Perfect level to start learning hammer ons and sliding techniques.
This is a perfect example of a non-trivial song that on paper sounds deceptively more complex than they actually are, but actually are quite easy and very much more approachable to play than they appear. So kudos to Sheeran for his 4-chord genius songwriting as well.
I just started learning music and guitar a couple months ago and this song was a massive challenge for me, but it looked very achievable, it's just the perfect balance between easy and challenging. And now I'm almost able to play the finger picking version perfectly start to end.

I know this is late but in the interlude, on the tabs during the cadd9 chord, I think the root is meant to be on 3rd fret of the 5th string not the 6th string?
Yeah and also there is a 0 on the D string although it should be a 2 with this chord. Also also, it says Em at the top left where the G should be.

Hey, assuming you won't see this but for what it's worth, thank you. I'm a professional musician but have to pay the bills by doing awful wedding gigs time to time. I'm prepping for one and it has an incredibly generic and soul sucking set list to learn including this number. Your videos have made learning these quick and easy and makes me remember that I'm lucky to make a living playing music, even if sometimes it's other people's formulaic, awful four chord dreck. Whatever to make their day really awesome, I shall put aside any indifference I have toward the song and make it my own for those few minutes.
