Love your review…and humor!!! 😂 It’s a relief to see a solid real-life review of this lens against other lenses that has a positive outcome. The folks down at CVP did not like this lens so much. Personally I liked the DZOFILM 16mm the best with the best bokeh and best flare. Also the lens breathing is pretty well controlled. Not so much as their other Vespids but certainly acceptable. Also the flare I like. I worked with the Laowa 12mm a couple of times, and although they are good, they lack something…now I know. That flare was awful… After the CVP review I was a bit turned off for this 16mm to complete my Vespid set but you guys are NOT best friends with my savings account 😡 Thanx so much!! And keep up the amazing work 👊🏻

Yes I was really happy with the 16mm Vespid shooting the short film with it…but then after seeing the Vespid compared side-by-side with the Cooke and the Laowa I liked it even more. Hey at least we didn’t convince you to buy the Cooke! 😆 and I agree the Laowa is a fun lens for being what it is - a super wide but it lacks the character that this DZO has with the flares and skin tones. I agree. We are lucky to have them…I remember 10 years ago or so only things avail in the lower range were the Zeiss Cp2 and then the Canon CN-E but for almost 3x the price of these Vespids. Good times to be making films!
Are you using a tilta mirage mattebox? I'm afraid that this lens may vignette on FF (Fuji Xh2s + Speedbooster Ultra) Do you have any experience on this topic?
Hey! We use the Bright Tangerine Misfit Atom, the Tilta Mini Matte Box, and the Arri LMB matte boxes. I haven’t use the Fuji XH2s with speed booster. Sorry we couldn’t help ya there!
I have not used the Meike as much. They’re decent lenses. I feel like the Vespid’s are a little better for what I do. I like the Vespid flares better and I find their focus rings smoother. The Meike also didn’t have a full set for a long time. I think they have most focal lengths out now but DZO has a more complete set with the Macro and 21mm and 40mm…DZO also has the Pictor zooms that match optically pretty well to the Vespids. I feel DZO is the way to go if you want a complete set and slightly better optics. And Meike is the choice if you want to save a little money as they’re slightly cheaper.
Your short film, while fun and the colours look great, appears very noisy on my screen and appears to break up a bit on the right hand side. Of course, that could be youtube compression. It's hard to tell. Can I ask what camera you shot the short on? And what was the crop factor? Thanks
Thanks for watching! I think part of it is the RUclips compression. It doesn’t handle large dark areas well. It’s much cleaner in the raw footage. Are you watching in 4K? It’s a bit better when you select that option. We shot on Alexa Mini which has a S35 crop. And luckily the bad compression doesn’t have anything to do with the lens 😆👍

I'm talking 'bout the blonde lady who sat there so patiently, and then moved the penlight flashlight across the screen in such a great move left to right, then, wow!, up and down too! I could watch her for hours. The brunette lady is nice, but I have lost my heart to the flashlight lady! Christian? We are over him, he is so 2021.
