Another note.. On this model the fan was always loud and grindy.. hence the noiseless fan replacement. They got a lot wrong with this system, but it's the toughest most reliable laptop next to a toughbook. I've seen these things working after falls that snap the hinges off the screen and are still booting.
I know about the video quality issue towards the end of the video. I chose to leave it alone because during that section of the video I was only talking and visuals were not critical. I know some of you may be annoyed by it and I apologize in advance.
Good deal ,put it back together and sell it for $100-.but trust me from experience don't bring any laptop/pc into yr casa until you clean it out completely .lot of roaches /etc can be hiding in there
Unless you can find a matching donor shell for $2.50, I don't think you'll find any of those replacement parts for a reasonable price. If you don't want those areas completely exposed, you might consider just DIYing some covers. You could also check with your local libraries and your school to see if they offer any public access to a 3d printer. As for the keys, maybe try calling up local computer repair businesses and see if they have any dead keyboards laying around with matching caps.
I believe that you can put something like core 2 duo t9400 or t9600 into this laptop. And since laptop of this vintage probably could use a thermal paste replacement and this processors cost just a few dollars this would be a worthy upgrade. And would make an interesting video too.
I'd bet the AC adapter died, the laptop didn't power on and they thought ( or someone told them incorrectly ) the motherboard was shot. Nice find! Certainly worth more than $2.50 in parts alone, and that CPU should be upgradable for really cheap to give it a bit more kick.
Wow you nailed that on the head lol. Thats how exactly how I acquired mine for free. I have a nicer one tho G61, I dont have it in front of me it came with Beats audio , AMD instead of intel. and it has the Atheros WiFi card that allows monitor mode which is cool. The people said that it wouldn't power on and yes the battery did take a shit but it still powered on. Also they said the motherboard was shot (as per there IT guy), it just needed some TLC and a nice cleanout. These HP models get very hot , it wants to cook your hard drive. So I bought a 2.5" external hard drive enclosure and I'm all good.
Aren't cpu's on tiny portables typically embedded and not socketed? Not easy unless you think re-soddering a microball grid and flashing a custom bios are cheap and easy.
I wish I lived near you for two reasons: 1 it would be awesome to meet you and 2 I never find computers at any yard sales near me. I find monitors, printers, keyboards, but no systems ever! Except the time I found an IBM PS/1 and an iMac G3 at the same place
AA Computers and Technology I also have a bunch of old as shit computers. My prescott machine is so slow that it makes me want to drink myself every time I use it
I got a dell gx1 at flea market for $5 dollar and I think it was made 2000. it has 60 GB IBM disk star drive ( factory drive tested no errors on drive found) 128 mb of ram, sound blaster audio, ati graphics and all parts that came in the pc work. I installed windows 98 SE on the dell pc and windows 98 SE had all the drivers for PC so I didn't need to install any.
Oh as far as Windows, the 4 series never had any drivers past Vista released publically. They won't really install in Windows 8 or 10 because they do not recognize the OS. The windows default driver will be ok for general use but not great.
This model was my 2nd laptop. It has really good ram upgradability up to a full 2gb, and I believe you could still swap out the CPU on this one. But I don't remember I know I upgraded the hell out of mine taking the wifi to wireless N standard and a noiseless fan. But unlike a lot of my laptops this one is a bitch and a half to take apart and reassemble.. It is NOT modular like many laptops and you have a flat panel under the keyboard that is part of the cable management inside. it's a really piss poor case design. I rebuild broken laptops and I needed help getting this POS back together.. still miss it.
Wow, Win7 on a single-core Celeron 2.2 GHz? That was definitely a low-end machine even when it was new. I think it would be cool to give that kid one of your laptops to help him get started in his future studies.
I just got two of the Compaq equivalent of this laptop. one works fine, besides the fan which I believe is clogged by dust. On the other, the f1 keycap is broken off, there is no hard drive, and one ram slot doesn't work. they both have amd Sempron si-42 cpus, and GeForce 8200m gpus.
I had the G71, which was the model with the Intel Mobile 4 series graphics in it with a Core 2 Duo. Sadly, I no longer own that computer. I bought a 12-cell lithium battery off of Amazon for $30, and I got the thing to run for at least 7 hours (no joke) on maximum brightness with Wi-fi left on.
You can install inxi and type inxi -F for hardware info in terminal. I wouldn't bother looking for the bottom panels, keyboard and a battery for a single core laptop, especially not a consumer grade HP, it's just not worth the hassle. Maybe with the help of a few kind subscribers you can raise the money to buy the kid a used thinkpad so he can get programming on a good tough laptop with a great keyboard.
HP/Compaq got a lot of mileage out of that design. They had I think 3 or 4 motherboards. 2 Intel based ones, one with the 4 series and one with an Nvidia chipset. The models basically had parts added or missing. I've got 2 with the board you have but they do not have HDMI ports fitted. They also have 2 AMD based boards one with ATI graphics and one with Nvidia I believe. The HP G60 and Compaq CQ60 were the same systems with interchangeable parts. They are not really that fun to take apart though, getting at the CPU is a bear but you can put a Core 2 Duo in there.
Mr.smash 69 funny thing is that Windows 7 was on a similar model computer, FASTER processor and MORE memory, and it ran SLOWER than what it did with a slower cpu and Windows Vista.
I just get in my car and start driving. I have been doing this for awhile so I know where all of the sales are and which neighborhoods / areas I can get good prices in.
I don't know where you can get the covers from, but here's the part number 486621-001. And if you follow this link, partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?searchText=VW889UA, it'll take you to HP's PartSurfer if you need any other part numbers.
hp laptops are shiped with 250gig hard drive bc of the recovery parition hps flag shiped if you ask me i love that part of an hp makes system recovery so easy
Could you do one on the Dell Optiplex GX110. I bought mine for 6 dollars and it runs linux mint ok. I wanted to put crunchbang on it but it being weird with PLOP.
Lot of this ultra low cost used laptop but why on eBay I can find only "not working" starting from 20/30€? 🤔🤔 interested to find one for at least 10€, even 15 years old, but I can't do it.
Do you still need the parts for the bottom case? I just got one with a fried motherboard and it had these in good condition. Let me know if you want them, I'll give them to you if you pay shipping.
yeah no way he found it for just 2$, my guess is he bought it from ebay, what's the point of selling your laptop for 2$? Even if it's busted it's basically no profit at all, why bother?
Hey! Love your videos. I was wondering, I have a Lenovo B580 from 2012. The battery has steadily been getting worse over the years, but I'm unable to replace the battery itself. Is there any way that I can "renew" the battery performance without buying a new one? I'm running Ubuntu Studio (16.10).
I have a compaq cq56 witch is very similar to the laptop in this video but its an AMD system. I upgraded the cpu from a 2.3ghz single core to a dual core at 2.3ghz and upgraded the ram to 4gb ddr3 from 2gb I don't know if you can upgrade the cpu in the laptop shown in the video but the bottom of laptop has the same layout as my laptop
great deal I have two of then one spare for parts mine are both same but core dual on mine I have 4 gig ram works good with windows 7 was my kids computer they are good to use so you got a good computer
I don't think you should give him that laptop. That system is way too old and weak. See if you have something better stored up in your closet. Don't give him a single-core Celeron with 2 gigs of ram. Especially when he wants to major in computer science. Even if you upgrade the processor and ram, the upgrades would add up to at least around $80. I don't think you want to spend that much money on a system you got for less than $3. Start him off with something fresh. But as always, great video!
I thought the performance from this system was decent, it would make a good school machine. You are right, at this point I do not think the amount of money I would have to put into this machine to get it in top shape is worth it. Right now I am looking at $17 for a new keyboard, $15 for the back panel, $39.99 for a 120GB SSD and $20 for a new battery. I think I will go searching in the back when I get the chance to see if I can find something better.
+AA Computers and Technology. I would still buy the computer and seen you search anx i believe you did buy the parts and i will buy that computer at $80. if you have another computer i will buy it. where is your garage sale at? i live in houston.
Well, if all you do is web browsing, non-HD YT, office tasks and Solitaire, even a Pentium M can make a decent daily driver. It really depends on your needs.
I dunno why you don't have ove 1million subscribers, you put a lot of effort into your videos but so under rated
at $2.50, every computer is worth it
unless the verge guy built it
And if it works
Another note.. On this model the fan was always loud and grindy.. hence the noiseless fan replacement. They got a lot wrong with this system, but it's the toughest most reliable laptop next to a toughbook. I've seen these things working after falls that snap the hinges off the screen and are still booting.
I don't know why but I find these videos entertaining.
probably had a dead drive and it's owner didn't want to pay to have it replaced
Thats how I came about my nearly identical laptop.
Toby Cowles also it has the worst specs for a win7 native laptop
Someone sold my friend a very cheap laptop that didn't work but apparently just had incompatible RAM sticks
I know about the video quality issue towards the end of the video. I chose to leave it alone because during that section of the video I was only talking and visuals were not critical. I know some of you may be annoyed by it and I apologize in advance.
I hated that computer, the touchpad never work and had overheating problems
I would assume 90% of laptops are such though. I've got a slower main pc that lags up a bit and it's faster than many laptops I think
Can you put windows 10 32 bit or 64 bit on it?
Wow, that computer looks exactly like a Compaq Presario CQ50
I'm on a Athlon x2 Presario laptop that look damn near the same (though this would destroy that Celeron laptop)
Good deal ,put it back together and sell it for $100-.but trust me from experience don't bring any laptop/pc into yr casa until you clean it out completely .lot of roaches /etc can be hiding in there

or you could go lazy and just duct tape the back
better off rigging something up
Actually it is easy to find them for like 1 real (here in Brazil), that may be like 26cents of dollar
I thought I was watching this video at 2x speed by accident. Nope, it was set to normal. I switched it to 2x speed. Mind blown.
Good job. You saved a machine from becoming spare parts in mind that it is fully operational.
I believe that you can put something like core 2 duo t9400 or t9600 into this laptop. And since laptop of this vintage probably could use a thermal paste replacement and this processors cost just a few dollars this would be a worthy upgrade. And would make an interesting video too.

WaybackTECH And a light os, ubuntu is a bit heavy
Wow you nailed that on the head lol. Thats how exactly how I acquired mine for free. @@ctsd623 No. Celeron 900 is a Socket P processor and can easily be replaced on laptops like these. I've done it before, several times.
There's a dog at 6:22
Cherano Kreeft :D ya there it is did you see it

"This is a fairly new laptop, it came from 2008-2009" lol thats not new
Haha. When you forget it's 2016 :p .
AA Computers and Technology I also have a bunch of old as shit computers. My prescott machine is so slow that it makes me want to drink myself every time I use it
yea well I still haved a Pentium 1 machine
brother jugger
great maybe you wanna try puppy linux on it
maybe ill see
Great video. I think you should do the upgrade video.
I got a dell gx1 at flea market for $5 dollar and I think it was made 2000. it has 60 GB IBM disk star drive ( factory drive tested no errors on drive found) 128 mb of ram, sound blaster audio, ati graphics and all parts that came in the pc work. Cool, Nice find!
Dude, you make me exhausted just listening to you
Dude I fucking love these kinds of videos.
I remember this laptop. I believe we are still using one to this day for something.
Fellow band kid! Love your videos on older hardware!
Oh as far as Windows, the 4 series never had any drivers past Vista released publically. They won't really install in Windows 8 or 10 because they do not recognize the OS. The windows default driver will be ok for general use but not great.
Thanks for not using SpyOS 10 on this computer!
Love how computers are made and how they work !
Wood do the bulk pickup nites in town and pick up ten laptops and get six of em funning for seniors......now it's all gone with PC recycle centers
The laptop fan from HP sounds fine the non elitebooks have cheaper fans in it. They work but they are very loud!
wow this laptop is what I own... thx for making a video on it
JackHurtsLeg same here

Which instrument did you march when you were in marching band?
Wow, Win7 on a single-core Celeron 2.2 GHz? That was definitely a low-end machine even when it was new. I think it would be cool to give that kid one of your laptops to help him get started in his future studies.
A month ago i got from trash HP probook 4530s, core i5 2450m, 8gb ddr3, 120gb ssd. Everything works with w10 so smooth.
Don't apologies for Linux bias, it's your channel bro
I just got two of the Compaq equivalent of this laptop. one works fine, besides the fan which I believe is clogged by dust. On the other, the f1 keycap is broken off, there is no hard drive, and one ram slot doesn't work. they both have amd Sempron si-42 cpus, and GeForce 8200m gpus.
Man, you're good in finding great deals. Great video!
I have one of these laptops, mine has a Light scribe DVD drive in it, Core 2 Duo and runs Windows Vista.
My dad has this exact laptop except it's got a Core 2 duo and NVidia Graphics. It's a G70 17 inch though. They look the same.
Nice :)
I had the G71, which was the model with the Intel Mobile 4 series graphics in it with a Core 2 Duo. Sadly, I no longer own that computer. I bought a 12-cell lithium battery off of Amazon for $30, and I got the thing to run for at least 7 hours (no joke) on maximum brightness with Wi-fi left on.
we are ets2 gamer yey
it's doing well for a single core tbh
You can install inxi and type inxi -F for hardware info in terminal.

Nice! Fun find for just $2.50
This video deserves a like! Thanks for helping people out
Apparently this laptop was also sold as the Compaq cq60
Hello Please in future x230 + exp gdc sensie? Gtx 970 msi?
I'm so impressed with your computer giveaway to that meeting student son
Are any of the really cheap computers run any good at a garage sales ?
I remember using one of these! They were pretty snappy other than... windows... vista... LOL
Vista is slow, that's why a lot of people kept using Windows XP until Micro$oft decided to pull the plug on XP.
Mr.smash 69 funny thing is that Windows 7 was on a similar model computer, FASTER processor and MORE memory, and it ran SLOWER than what it did with a slower cpu and Windows Vista.
Jordan Woolery Damn.
Mr.smash 69 optimization is key I guess. That, or the older CPU used more power and was thus able to compute faster.
Jordan Woolery I wouldn't know. I never used VIsta, don't like it. I used XP until Micro$oft pulled XP's support.
Why do so many old laptops have Best Buy stickers on the bottom? Like what's up with that??
The lids thickness I literally as thick as my laptop
What do you look for to find computers at garage sales? Any keywords? Also do you just find them on Craigslist?
I just get in my car and start driving. I have been doing this for awhile so I know where all of the sales are and which neighborhoods / areas I can get good prices in.

you always get those amazing deals...
yeah no way he found it for just 2$, my guess is he bought it from ebay, what's the point of selling your laptop for 2$? Even if it's busted it's basically no profit at all, why bother?
that screen looking thing to the right what is that ?
Hey! Love your videos.

unfortunately, there is no way without replacing the battery. But it usually really is not that hard and there are many guides you can find on RUclips
i had that laptop for a few months while i was getting a new computer and it sucks as a daily driver
Where did you bought this
Don't forget to check out this month's giveaway! : www.aacomputersandtechnology.com/aacat-giveaways/
It closes 9/30.
Good luck on getting to 10,000 subscribers. i await your 10,000
Thanks! We are so close :) !
AA Computers and Technology your welcome
aww man it's a year ago now :(
I have a compaq cq56 witch is very similar to the laptop in this video but its an AMD system. I upgraded the cpu from a 2.3ghz single core to a dual core at 2.3ghz and upgraded the ram to 4gb ddr3 from 2gb

I have the Compaq version of this laptop from 2011 and mine came with a dead hard drive.
great deal I have two of then one spare for parts mine are both same but core dual on mine I have 4 gig ram works good with windows 7 was my kids computer they are good to use so you got a good computer
I't pretty much IDENTICAL to my old Compaq Presario CQ60, even the specs!
do you have computers for sale at that price? where is the garage sale?
Great content. Figure out your microphone or placement??? harsh volume threshold disturbs my aura, bro
So lucky! Someone tried to sell me an Intel Atom netbook from 2010 that was bent, almost as if it were ran over by a car! For $15!
your pattern of speech is like Austin Evans lmaooo
linux runs so fast on that low end laptop .....very impresive
If you plan on giving the student that laptop, won't you need to replace the battery since it's dead?
Yes. Replacement batteries are cheap and easy to find. However, the other parts such as the key caps and bottom panel are not as readily available.
Oh okk!
Hey, I watch your videos and I'm not sure if you do this, but I figured you should make a video of some cool things we could do with ubuntu..
Ubuntu may be a bit heavy. You could try a xubuntu or linux mint, it maybe will have better performance
please let me know what mouse that is!
Looks like the Compaq Presario cq60 :)
cute dog
Install Chrome OS on that laptop it would run butter smooth
What's wrong with Chrome OS? And BTW Chrome OS is an Linux DIstro.
***** I know you can get more out of Linux, I've been using Mint for the past week or two.
What Linux version are you using?
excellent work👍
I want to know what garage sales you're going to where you're finding laptops for mere dollars.
Holy Jesus...Where can I buy this? Just send me the link dude.
I don't think you should give him that laptop. That system is way too old and weak. See if you have something better stored up in your closet. Don't give him a single-core Celeron with 2 gigs of ram. I have so many of these laptops at my house but they barely work and are really slow
Cute dog on background at 6:23
I NEED PRODUCT KEYS ZOOM IN ON THEM💀
It's good for us to have perfectly working laptop at a very low price because they was not working for their previous owner
Dude are you on speed?
Manufactured in 2008/9...
Windows 7 wasn't released there yet.
Windows 7 was released in 2009 but not sp1
i have amd sempron 2800+ 1.6ghz and one gb ram in old machinne and runnig fine not excellent but works fine in my projects
I have one of this and I still use it as daily driver xD
Mom:why do wanna go to USA
Me:They have garage sells and thriftshops
⊙﹏⊙
Your country doesn’t have these??
I have the same laptop I think but with a amd processor in it
I have a laptop similar to it mines was g61-511 wm
decent daily driver? you need at least 5th gen Intel atom or 5th gen Celeron minimum for a daily driver
Well, if all you do is web browsing, non-HD YT, office tasks and Solitaire, even a Pentium M can make a decent daily driver. It really depends on your needs.
can it run Crysis 3 ?
hp laptops usually ship with seagate drives
How do you find these xd
