How to shoot a medieval longbow

- In this video Kevin Hicks shows you how he shoots the medieval longbow. Famous as the Warwick Bowman, for years Kevin entertained thousands of people every week at Warwick Castle, England. Now living in Canada he's taken up the longbow once again and still finds joy in shooting this beautifully simple weapon. Medieval history at its best.

Had the pleasure of seeing this gentleman demonstrate his skill at Warwick Castle nearly 20 years ago. He put on an extremely interesting and informative performance. So glad to see he’s still at it.
Wow, thanks Robert. I also have wonderful memories of working with the public at Warwick 👍🏻
I do aswell he used some whistling arrows aswell as normal arrows
I was just wondering if I did too. I went to Warwick Castle in Oct 2009
@@keithbland9023 hi Keith, that wouldn’t have been me, I left the castle in 05.
@@thehistorysquad that's a bummer. I like how you explain things.
as a bowyer myself, this guy knows what hes talking about. no frills, just business. cool guy
Thanks so much!
How much to make me a Long Bow
A backstop like that, must be a pro.
I love the factual way he says "it's just a bow", people have such a habit of romaticizing the bow and attributing such a mystic to all the various aspects that sometimes are so far from the facts.
Very true. We live in a modern world of spcecilisation, where engineers and scientists from around the world constantly design, test and discuss until we arrive at the most efficient solutions. We can explain every little component of a car or a smartphone.
In pre-industrial times, every blade, every plow, every wagon and cart would have been different, just becase that's the best solution that the maker could think of, and it seemed to work out. It wasn't because he necessrily understood the subtle chemistry and physics involved in every design decision.
Indeed. Nevertheless, my warbow can perform amazing feats in the kitchen.
Thanks for your comment, glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻
It is interesting that every culture on earth has made some form of bow.
@@hilossrt4 It certainly is 👍🏻
I like how humble he is about history, heritage, and his skills. It's a pleasure to watch, and I'm happy to sit here and learn.
Thanks Zachary, I'm glad you enjoyed the video 👍🏻
Kevin, I saw you shoot at Warwick castle in 2001. Your PA and microphone stopped working so you gathered everyone in closer to hear you tell tales of bow men in battle. It was magical, you are a great story teller and it was the highlight of the day. Over 20 year later I shoot with my children and have made my own longbow. Its only a laminate one instead of Yew, but it all stems from that day at Warwick castle. Thank you.
Wow, that amazing, I take that as a huge compliment, thanks Paul - glad to hear you're still shooting 👍🏻
@@thehistorysquad Well I am having to have a break from shooting as last month I was hit by a car and have had a leg amputation. I will be back one day though when I can get a prosthetic leg. It will just take some time and rehab. Keep educating and entertaining us Kevin.

I'm back shooting archery.
I'm an infantry veteran and took up archery 2 years ago, one of the old guys in the club let me use his long bow and I fell in love with it, been shooting long bow ever since, I know 2 years aint long but it's been the "something" I was missing since getting out the Army.
I can really understand that and am with you 100% 👍🏻
Same here, left the army in 2016 and went with a friend to the archery range and fell in love with his pacific yew bow. Been shooting my own since then. I’ve met a few veterans at the local range near me. Kevin definitely sounds like a veteran we all used to know!
Have you hunted game with it? Just curious.✌️
I can relate to the long bow experience. They are my favourite to use. Though I like a gentle recurve too.
So nice to se him back agian. Kevin Hicks is so good at telling history i could listen to him talking all day. And as a fellow longbowmen he is inspiring, cheers from sweden.
Thanks for watching!
His grouping with those arrows is insanely impressive, and rather terrifying to be quite honest. Might not have hit the head, but he certainly took all of the guys standing around his target!
Hahah, that's my favourite saying 😉. Thanks for watching
I'm the same I say I may not hit that one guy but I scared the funk out of all his mates and caused some trip hazards too lol
I've been shooting Olympic recurve for almost 6 months now and it's very difficult sport even with all the modern hardware. So many variables in the bow and technique. Makes me really appreciate his skill in archery.
@@vikingjohn9813 Hi Viking John, I would be brilliant at this as I'm great at hitting everything but what I'm aiming at!! Just started shooting again and my target is pretty safe but everything around it gets hit!! 😂😂😂.

I've just come across these videos. Very refreshing to find someone humble, grateful and pragmatic about their relationship with an unusual weapon and their equally unusual calling/profession over the years. Instantly likeable and someone I feel could offer much in the way of mentoring. If you see this comment, many thanks and well wishes from Australia.
Well hello there from Canada! Thanks for your lovely comment, I'm glad you like the content & hope you stick around for some more. CHEERS
"You dont want it to go off while im filming". I freaking love this guy
I spat a little of my beverage out.
Lovely to see you shooting again Kevin. I'm one of the guys with a 30lb bow and enjoying it. Just great to see the arrows fly. Take care and keep shooting.
Thanks Jonathan, it felt good to shoot again, although the snow is on the ground right now, as soon as it thaws I'll be out there again.
I'm the same. I took up field archery 3 years ago and started with a 30lb bow. I then bought a 35lb bow, but I just keep coming back to the 30lb one as I like using it. It can comfortably hit any of the 40 targets on our course from the nearest at about 7 yards to the furthest at about 55 yards. My longest shot so far with it is about 100 yards. No need to go for anything heavier than 30lb, and I can comfortably shoot with it all day long.
My kids and I had a great time with you at Warwick castle back in the day - I hope they've got someone as good, as knowledgable and as fun to take over !
Thanks buddy, I hope so too!
I wonder if it's the guy that made a few videos with Tod's Stuff?
@@Vinnay94 Hi Vinny, I haven't done any videos with Tod but I do know him and he has a great channel for sure.
Thanks for making these videos. I really enjoy watching you shoot. I picked up my first longbow last year. I shot it two to three times a week for about 4 hours at a time until it broke. I got my second a few months ago. Your videos have been a big help in learning to shoot it. I always loved the way they looked and the history associated with them. Then I found out I'm descended from a Welsh archer who served Jasper Tudor and I had to get one. Looking forward to seeing more from you sir.
Thanks Charles, I'm really glad you've found them helpful.
Welcome to Canada, good Sir. Thank you for your videos. I have been an archer since a young teen, and still love it so much, was so good for helping back injury as well, and a great excuse to hunt even not caring whether to actually score a deer. Hundreds and hundreds of relaxing walks and fun gopher plinking. Great to see you.
Love it! Cheers Greg 👍🏻
Mr Hicks, you are a joy to watch and listen to. I personally want to thank you for getting me into Longbow shooting after seeing you at Warwick castle many years ago. you are a legend sir!
Well, thank you Jeff! So happy to hear that. Cheers.
Pro Tip: If shooting a longbow proves difficult, try shooting just the arrows instead.
Finally a serious piece of advice 🤔 lol

Wow!! Thanks Deadest of hats!! I will try this tomorrow. Was having a devil of a job getting the bow to stick in the target....even at close range! Arrows only tomorrow then 👍👍😂😂😂.
Dave..............
Further to this comment I am now editing, the way I have been shooting of late I would probably be more accurate chucking the bow at the target!! 😕😕.
Is Kevin from Doodlay?
Pretty sure you’re supposed to shoot the target and not the bow.
Love watching your videos Kevin, you have a natural way of explanation and having fun with your audience, long may you reign 🤘🏹
I competed in archery in college in 1978 and 1979. In 1979 I was the 3rd best female collegiate archer in Southern California, and the 11th best female Intercollegiate Archer in the US.
I don't shoot anymore but am still proud of what I accomplished more than 40 years ago.
My bow is a recurve take-down bow with maple limbs and a rosewood body with a 35# draw weight. Very attractive looking, in my opinion.
Excellent, well done you!!
I'd bet that if you grab a bow again, you'll shoot just as well. It happened to me with a 20 year span, was quite amazed. Americans call these things "like riding a bike" haha! And it's true 😀 Have a good one ma'am!
Such a simple weapon, gracefully making things fly.
Like many here, I met you briefly at Warwick in 2000 and again in 2001. Your demonstrations were vivid and left an impression. Thanks!!
For once someone who lived their craft that learned instinctually. Also shooting in real army style of the day. You gave us a close to real feel how the archers of the day had to operate. Image a 1000 bowmen rain hell all at once. If you took your 15 and multiples it by 1000. In one minute 15,000 arrows pelted the enemy . Simply amazing !
Thanks John, well put 👍🏻

So much respect for this man. Master of his craft
Been living here in Saskatchewan for around 7 years and your right the skies are amazing !
I found it fascinating that longbow men were known to practice and hone their abilities from a young age. Much more valuable to an army than a conscript who was handed a rusty sword on the day of the battle.
Yes, so true - the conscript was the French way 👍🏻
You mean spear,
Spears and. Clubs were common, and so was no weapk. At all
Swords werent because they required training
swords are deeply personal weapons, spears arn't. As long as you've got your spear and you're next to your mates (who also have spears) you're doing your job on the battlefield, swords self defense weapons when your battlefield weapons fail you.
At certain periods during the Hundred Year War young men in the villages were required by law to practice with the bow regularly.
don't you mean a rusty crossbow ;);)
Love the fact that arrows always look fragile and angelic while flying...I always forget that they look nice but pack a punch if they are coming towards you!
Another masterful video, thank you!
I own a Bickerstaffe longbow and out of the bows I own it is definitely my favourite. It is a sweet shooter with absolutely no kick whatsoever. I love it so much more than any of my synthetic ones. Hubby and I shoot whenever we can weather willing, we are both Berkshire UK born and bred so it seems only right. It is only a 50 pounder but that's how I like it because I can shoot all day and not mess up my shoulder. I'm with you on the left hand glove definitely after having to pull splinters of feather fletch out of my bowhand once. Once was enough! I'm only a 5' 2 shortygirl, my bow is taller than me. Love your channel, keep your string dry, your aim true and the content coming! ❤🎯
Hey thank you! I'm thrilled to hear you shoot and enjoy it so much. 👍🏻

I've been engaged in Archery since the 1970's and I still learn things both practical and historic. Thank you for this.
I string my bow the same way, but the poundage is only 35. I'm not that strong.
Hey Kevin Thanks for another great video. I shoot compound bows but I’ve always wanted to try a recurve, longbow. I have a idea for a video you could do. I would love to learn about the medieval archery tournaments you spoke of in your video. What where they like, what did they shoot at and what were the prizes? Also you could add any videos of you competing in your tournaments. Talk about how they work and the prizes maybe compare the two from old and new. Thank you for all the great videos. I’ve always been fascinated with the medieval history of the UK. Being from the US we don’t really have a long history. It’s good to finally find someone who really knows what he’s talking about and explains it in a way that’s easy for everyone to understand.
That's a great idea Ryan, I'll be sure to keep it in mind, thank you 👍🏻

Ah yes, the King is back
wow, thanks,
Beautiful. Thank you. My bow, even as a Scot who has always appreciated the inherent Englishness of the longbow but who has shot at Peebles, is jacked up.
Cheers Graeme, the Scots have always had good bowmen, but they were often used against us (the English) 😜
@@thehistorysquad Thank you. Well, there’s a thing. I’ve often wondered why us highlanders were more effective with it seems brute force than bowmen and tactics. Perhaps we would have been more successful in battle. Than in ‘battery’. Do you have any clues? I’m thinking yew, in case you wonder my intent here.
Great job drawing a 90 lb bow and shooting straight. The strongest traditional bow I've used is a 70 lb longbow for hunting.
I think a 90 lb bow could be classified as a war bow 🎯
Thanks. It was about 9lb when I first had it, but I'm sure it may have lost some poundage since then, still, it's very sweet to shoot.
wait, is longbow weightage different from recurve and compound weightage? because I shoot a 24lb recurve and the highest any of my club members have gone is my coach with a 38lb compound
@@vihaandas4346 No, except recurves and compounds tend to shoot fast and maybe a little straighter trajectory?
@@KingOfChaos213 so these people are actually pulling the whole 90 pounds. Damn
@@vihaandas4346 It can vary depending on draw for example a draw to face or across the chest draw to gain a bit extra poundage if the bow can handle it. My Ash self bow is about 60 but 69 when chest drawn.
I have just found this channel and I have found it exceptional thus far. Thank you for passing on our ancestors knowledge
Fascinating! I shoot a 50# recurve, but I feel like something’s missing from my life because I’ve never shot a longbow.
Yeah, you're missing a big point LOL 😜
Same here. Shot competitively (olympic recurve) for a couple of years, but except for a home made bow, I never held nor shot a proper longbow. Need to change that one day. 😊
Fantastic Work Kevin "Liegolas" I wonder how good people who did this every day were.
Thus far I’ve found all your videos fascinating, but as my late mother's maiden name was 'Fletcher' this had a little extra for me. May I ask what would happen when your quiver was empty in battle? I hardly think you’d say "Right lads, I’m all done so I’m off home for my dinner and to watch Corrie. Good luck!."
Thank you, I hope your enjoying your life over there. I enjoy wildlife and landscape photography and my only regret is not visiting Canada before being banned from flying.
Hi Mark, thanks for your comment. Bowyers and fletchers travelled with the army and arrows were stored by their hundreds of thousands and supplied to the bowmen by youngsters from the baggage train. So youngsters would run to the bowmen with arms full of arrows to resupply them, even in the midst of battle - hard to imagine isn't it.
@@thehistorysquad I had a horrible feeling that once again children would have probably the most dangerous role. Being a Lancastrian I’m well aware of how badly children were treat in the 19th century cotton industry. Thank you for your reply.

Great video and great armor 👍

The way he re-strings his bow is just absolute genius! The less stress the better for the bow.
It's interesting to see that even though you shoot at about half draw, uses a less poundage bow and are apparently more comfortable with nocking the arrow to the left side of the bow, your drawing technique still shows the hunched tendencies towards that of
Shad of Shadiversity and Joe Gibbs who did a warbow collaboration with Tod Cutler of Todsworkshop. Both shooting

Great to see this, very inspiring, but how about the most depressing part of archery…..loosing arrows ?
Having lost quite a number of my precious, beloved home made arrows and bolts I’m hesitant now to
go out there. It’s incredible how, in a straight line and within view , shafts just disappear ….I’ve been advised to get a metal detector ! Is there no modern electronic beacon answer etc ? Anyway, love the video collection so far.
Oh Cloudhop, I hear ya!
I've had hundred of arrows, from Denver to Sydney and Agincourt to Warwick, lying just a few centimetres under the ground, I've learned to no longer regard my arrows with love and just treat them as ammunition.

LOSING. Not "loosing" ffs! 👹

I know measuring the bowstring with a fist and a thumb is one of the possible origins of the expression "the rule of thumb" though there are others.
another possible origin “the rule of thumb” is....the stick you were once allowed to beat your wife with could be no thicker than your thumb 😳

Do you aim or do you shoot instinctive? Both eyes open & try to hit the target by feeling and experience?
Thanks alot, great video as always.
Hi there, thanks for your comment.
Yes, literally that - I shoot by instinct, both eyes open, looking over the arrow rather than along it, and focussing on the target. One useful tip is to adjust your feet just slightly if you need to, rather than adjusting your arm/aim.

I love watching your videos I've been shooting bows since I was young (59 now) I've got a 6 foot flat bow that's my favorite that draws 45 lbs at 28 in I used to jog around a local track and shoot at each lap (when I was much younger) my friends say I like bows because of my welsh ancestry I don't care why I just like seeing the arrow fly true to its target !
Absolutely and that little thump in the target is so satisfying. 👍🏻
Love your attitude: “don’t care what the draw-weight is, it works, and I can keep them coming”. 👍
